Our verdict on Chainflip AMM

7.5/10

Chainflip suits users who want to swap real Bitcoin, Ethereum or Solana across chains without wrapped tokens or connecting a wallet, and builders who want an SDK for those routes. Its main strength is native-asset swaps backed by a Proof-of-Stake validator network. The main caveat is its custom MPC trust model, with fee percentages and audit details not spelled out on the homepage, so start with a small trade and review the explorer first.

What is Chainflip AMM?

Chainflip is a cross-chain decentralised exchange that lets users swap native Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana and other assets without wrapped tokens or specialised wallets. It is listed on DefiLlama as a DEX on the Chainflip chain and Ethereum, with about $11 million in TVL and a listing date of November 2023.

The protocol is secured by its own Proof-of-Stake validator network and uses the FLIP token. The homepage also promotes a lending market for native assets, a Boost feature for Bitcoin yield, a Liquidity Provision app and an SDK for developers who want to add swaps to their own products. A banner says BNB Chain support is coming.

The homepage claims zero lost funds since launch and describes the code as audited, though auditor names are not shown there. Fee levels are described as transparent, but exact percentages are not published on the homepage.

How Chainflip AMM works

Chainflip runs its own Proof-of-Stake blockchain. A set of validators, advertised at 150, jointly controls vaults on each supported chain using threshold signatures (an MPC system), so no single party holds the keys. When you swap, you send native assets to a vault address and the network releases the target asset on the destination chain.

Pricing comes from an AMM design. A third-party write-up describes it as a Just-in-Time model, in which liquidity providers and market makers supply liquidity to pools priced against a common asset. Because swaps settle through the protocol rather than wrapped tokens, the user holds real BTC or ETH before and after the trade.

On top of swaps, the project offers lending and borrowing using the same vault system, plus a Liquidity Provision app and SDK for builders and integrators.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Swaps use native assets, so users do not hold wrapped tokens or rely on a bridge token.
  • No wallet connection is needed to start a swap, according to the homepage.
  • Covers major routes including Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana in one place.
  • Offers BTC-denominated yield for liquidity providers, with no impermanent loss claimed.
  • Two audits are listed and the project claims no funds lost since launch.
  • Open explorer and SDK make activity and integration visible to users and developers.

Watch out for

  • Several homepage statistics are inconsistent: the same $1.6B figure is shown for volume, swaps, FLIP burnt and broker fees, so users should check the on-chain explorer for real numbers.
  • Swap fee levels are not stated in plain figures; they are described only as transparent and scaling with trade size.
  • The audit count (two listed) is shown without named auditors or report details on the homepage.
  • Security rests on a validator set running a threshold (MPC) signing system, which is a different and less battle-tested trust model than a single-chain smart contract.
  • Native-asset swaps depend on deposit channels and vault addresses, so sending funds to a wrong address or chain is a user risk.
  • The lending and Boost yield products add smart-contract, oracle and liquidation risk beyond simple swapping.

Chainflip AMM fees

Chainflip says there are no hidden fees and that pricing is transparent and scales with trade size. Specific swap fee percentages are not stated on the homepage.

The homepage also lists broker fees as a tracked metric, and integrators can set their own commission through the SDK. Users should check the quote on the swap page and the explorer before confirming, as network and broker fees can vary by route.

Is Chainflip AMM safe?

Chainflip says its protocol has been audited and DefiLlama lists two audits. The homepage also claims zero lost funds since launch. Names of auditors and links to reports are not shown in its homepage, so readers should look for the reports in the project's documentation.

The security model relies on a decentralised set of validators holding vault keys via threshold signing, not on a central custodian. This avoids a single operator but concentrates risk in the validator software and incentives. The lending product adds oracle and liquidation risk, though loans are described as overcollateralised with Chainlink price feeds.

Regulatory status is not stated by the project. Users should check that using a cross-chain DEX is permitted where they live, double-check chains and addresses before sending, and avoid risking more than they can lose.
