Uncollateralized lending, also called undercollateralized or credit-based lending, covers DeFi protocols that issue loans without requiring borrowers to lock up more crypto than they borrow. Instead of automatic liquidations, lenders rely on underwriting, legal agreements, reputation, or first-loss backing. This makes the category closer to private credit than to typical on-chain money markets.
Most of these dApps work as pools or markets. Lenders deposit stablecoins, usually USDC or similar, and the protocol directs the funds to approved borrowers such as fintechs, market makers, card programmes or small businesses. Revenue comes mainly from interest paid by borrowers, with the protocol keeping a share as fees and passing the rest to lenders. Some, like Union Protocol, add token incentives, and some, like Cap and 3Jane Lending, issue a yield-bearing stablecoin that represents a share of the lending book.
When comparing, look at who takes losses first, how borrowers are vetted, and how long withdrawals can take. Size matters too: at the time of writing, Cap is the largest by TVL on our list at roughly $191 million, followed by 3Jane Lending and Wildcat Protocol, while many others are very small. Also check chain support, whether access is permissioned, and whether the protocol is still active, since Goldfinch is winding down. These products carry real credit risk, so only use money you can afford to lose and confirm that the service is legal where you live.

Frequently asked questions
What is uncollateralized lending in DeFi?
It is lending where the borrower does not post crypto collateral that can be sold automatically if prices fall. Instead, the loan relies on the borrower's reputation, legal agreements, underwriting or backing from third parties. If the borrower fails to repay, lenders can lose money.
Is uncollateralized lending safe?
It generally carries more risk than overcollateralized lending, because there is no collateral to liquidate automatically. Main risks include borrower default, delayed withdrawals, smart contract bugs, and reliance on off-chain legal enforcement. Higher advertised yields usually reflect that extra credit risk, and capital can be lost.
How do these protocols decide who can borrow?
Protocols differ in how they handle this. Cap uses underwriters who back loans, Wildcat lets borrowers set their own market terms for approved lenders, and Union Protocol relies on users vouching for people they trust. Others, such as Clearpool Lending and Pareto Credit, focus on vetted institutional borrowers. Read each protocol's documentation to see who absorbs losses first.
Where does the yield come from?
Depositors typically earn yield paid from the interest borrowers owe, sometimes topped up with token rewards. Protocols like 3Jane Lending and Kasu route stablecoin deposits to fintechs or businesses. Yields are variable and not guaranteed, and some platforms can take weeks to process redemptions.
Is Goldfinch still accepting deposits?
Goldfinch is described as shutting down and no longer taking new deposits, so it is mainly of interest to existing users managing their positions. Always check a protocol's current status before depositing, since smaller credit platforms can change or wind down.
Can anyone lend or borrow on these platforms?
Some are open to any wallet, while others are permissioned. Wildcat uses approved lenders, and Clearpool Lending is a permissioned marketplace aimed at institutions, so access may involve onboarding or checks. Rules vary by protocol and by where you live, so check the eligibility terms and make sure the service is legal in your jurisdiction before using it.
What is the largest uncollateralized lending dApp by TVL?
cap is the largest uncollateralized lending dApp by total value locked, with $180M. It is followed by 3Jane Lending ($11.1M) and Wildcat Protocol ($2.92M). TVL figures come from DefiLlama and change daily.
Which uncollateralized lending dApp has the highest DappsAtlas score?
3Jane Lending has the highest score at 7.0/10, ahead of cap (6.8) and Wildcat Protocol (6.8). Scores weigh security, ease of use, fees and features, and are based only on facts we could verify.
How many uncollateralized lending dApps does DappsAtlas track?

What chains do most uncollateralized lending dApps run on?
Which uncollateralized lending dApps grew the most this week?
Among uncollateralized lending dApps with at least $1M locked, 3Jane Lending had the biggest 7-day TVL gain (+156%) and Goldfinch the biggest drop (−8.4%). Combined TVL moved −0.4% over the same seven days.
What is the average score for uncollateralized lending dApps?
