Union Protocol Review 2026: Credit Backed by Trust

Union is an open-source protocol for peer-to-peer onchain credit, where users vouch for people they trust and those people can borrow without posting collateral. It is an interesting model, but small in size and carrying real default and contract risk.

Our verdict on Union Protocol

5.5/10

Union suits DeFi users who want to try an unusual model of lending based on social trust and are comfortable with the risk of losing staked funds. Its main strength is a clear, open-source design for collateral-free credit with community governance. The main caveat is that no audits are listed, TVL is small, and a borrower default falls on the people who vouched for them. Size positions accordingly.

What is Union Protocol?

Union Protocol is an open-source DeFi credit protocol. Its pitch is credit backed by trust instead of collateral: you vouch for people you know, and they can borrow against those vouches. The homepage lists no collateral, no credit score and no middlemen as the core ideas.

The protocol is tracked under uncollateralised lending and has been listed since June 2022. The homepage says it runs on Ethereum, Base and Optimism, and tracked data also shows Arbitrum. Union v2 was announced as live on Optimism, and public reporting mentions a later Union V3 upgrade from the wider Union project.

The tracked TVL is roughly $266,000, which is small. The project also points to uses beyond friends lending to each other, such as business credit, NFT-holder vouching contracts and automated programs that underwrite and borrow onchain.

How Union Protocol works

Union replaces collateral with trust. A user stakes stablecoins and vouches for another address, which extends that address a line of credit. The more vouches someone gets, the more credit they can draw on.

A borrower uses the credit line from any wallet, without a credit score or middleman. Stakers who vouched earn when the borrower takes a loan and receive UNION tokens for backing people. If a borrower does not repay, the stakers who backed them are the ones exposed to the loss.

Governance sits with UNION token holders, who vote on parameters including the rate. Developers can also build on the system, since credit can be borrowed and lent directly from a smart contract.

7 features

Key features

01

Personal credit lines

Users build a personal onchain credit line from vouches by people who trust them, and draw on it when needed.

02

Vouching and staking

Stakers deposit stablecoins and vouch for trusted contacts, extending them credit and earning when those contacts borrow.

03

Governance by users

Rates and other protocol parameters are decided by votes from UNION token holders rather than a central operator.

04

Programmable credit

Developers can borrow and lend directly from a smart contract, for example a contract that vouches for holders of a specific NFT.

05

Open-source code

The protocol is open-source, with code on GitHub and documentation for builders.

06

Personal, business and bot use

Union describes use by individuals, small businesses and automated programs that underwrite and borrow onchain like a human.

07

Referral onboarding

The homepage mentions helper contracts that reduce registration friction and reward referrals for onboarding people.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Clear idea: borrowing without collateral through vouches from trusted contacts
  • Open-source code and public documentation, including a section on types of risk
  • Governance by UNION token holders, who set the rate and other parameters
  • Programmable credit that developers can integrate through smart contracts
  • Available on several networks including Ethereum, Optimism and Base

Watch out for

  • Very small TVL (about $266,000 on the tracked data), so liquidity is thin
  • No audits are listed in the tracked data
  • Lending without collateral depends on trust: a vouched borrower who defaults can cause losses for the people who vouched
  • Smart-contract risk is acknowledged by the project itself in its risk documentation
  • The model is hard for newcomers to grasp compared with a standard collateralised money market
  • Fees, interest rates and staking yields are set by governance and are not stated on the homepage

Union Protocol fees

Union does not publish a fixed fee schedule on its homepage. It says all parameters, including the interest rate, are decided by the users through governance, so the rate can change over time.

Borrowers pay interest, and stakers who vouch earn when those they back borrow, plus UNION token rewards. Current rates and any origination or network costs would appear in the app and the documentation. Gas fees on the chosen network apply to every transaction.

Is Union Protocol safe?

Tracked data lists no audits for Union, and the project's own documentation says the protocol is software that may contain bugs. Users should treat smart-contract risk as real. The docs also describe other risk types, and the main one is credit risk: because borrowers post no collateral, a default is absorbed by the stakers who vouched for them.

Union is non-custodial in the usual DeFi sense, with users interacting from their own wallets. The homepage does not mention an insurance fund, a licence or regulatory status. The project does not name any hack, but the small TVL means limited liquidity and little track record at scale.

6 steps

How to get started with Union Protocol

  1. 1

Check that using DeFi lending is allowed where you live and that you understand the risks.

  2. 2

Read the Union documentation, including the pages on how it works and the types of risk.

  3. 3

Connect a web3 wallet to the app and choose a supported network such as Optimism, Base or Ethereum.

  4. 4

To lend, stake stablecoins and vouch for a trusted contact, starting with a small amount.

  5. 5

To borrow, ask people who trust you to vouch for your address, then draw on your credit line once it is available.

  6. 6

Follow the governance forum if you want to vote on rates and protocol changes with UNION tokens.

Who Union Protocol is for

Union fits experienced DeFi users, developers and small communities who want to experiment with peer-to-peer credit and can judge the people they vouch for. It is a poor fit for anyone seeking predictable yield or deep liquidity.

Union Protocol FAQs

What is Union Protocol?

Union is a DeFi credit protocol that lets people and programs give and use credit onchain without collateral. Credit lines are built from vouches by trusted contacts, and users stake stablecoins to back those vouches.

Which networks does Union support?

Union describes itself as available from any web3 wallet on Ethereum, Base and Optimism. Tracked data also lists Arbitrum. The homepage highlights Union v2 as live on Optimism.

How can you borrow without collateral on Union?

A borrower draws on a credit line made up of vouches from other users. Those users have staked stablecoins to back the borrower. There is no collateral from the borrower, so the stakers carry the risk if the loan is not repaid.

What is the UNION token for?

UNION is the governance token. The homepage says it is earned by using the protocol and that holders set all parameters, including the interest rate, through votes. Stakers earn UNION for backing people they trust.

Is Union Protocol safe?

Not necessarily. The project's own risk documentation notes that the protocol is software and may contain bugs. Tracked data lists no audits, and uncollateralised lending carries default risk. Only use funds you can afford to lose.

Do you need a credit score to use Union?

The homepage says anyone can build credit by asking others to vouch for them, starting with just an Ethereum address. Borrowing power depends on how much others are willing to back you with.
