The Internet Computer is a layer-1 blockchain developed by the DFINITY Foundation. Instead of one chain that every node processes, it is built from subnets, groups of nodes run in independent data centers, and each subnet hosts smart contracts called canisters. Adding subnets is how the network scales. It is not EVM-based: canisters run WebAssembly, and the idea is that a whole app, including its front end, back end and data, can live on-chain.

The native token is ICP. It is used for governance and staking through the NNS DAO, and it can be converted into cycles, which pay for computation. Because developers prepay running costs in cycles, ordinary users typically do not pay a gas fee for every action, though individual apps can set their own charges.

The ecosystem on our site is small, with 22 dApps and about $7.7M of DeFi TVL at the time of writing. Native DeFi is led by Liquidium, a lending protocol for borrowing stablecoins against BTC, ETH or ICP, along with the exchanges ICPSwap and ICDex and the bridge 1sec. Beyond DeFi, the chain is known for governance tooling in Service Nervous Systems, StakedICP for liquid staking, the Entrepot NFT marketplace and the Dscvr social platform. Centralized exchanges such as Bitget and Gate also appear on this page, but they operate across many chains.

Frequently asked questions

What is ICP used for?

ICP is the native token of the Internet Computer. It is used for governance through the NNS DAO, for staking, and it can be converted into cycles, which pay for computation on the network. It is also traded on exchanges.

Is the Internet Computer EVM compatible?

No. The Internet Computer runs its own execution environment based on canisters, which are WebAssembly smart contracts, so Solidity-based apps do not run on it as they are. It connects to Ethereum and other EVM networks through integrations and bridges such as 1sec.

What is a canister?

A canister is a smart contract bundle that holds both code and data. Developers can serve a front end, run back-end logic and store state in the same canister, which is how the chain aims to host whole applications on-chain.

How do fees work on the Internet Computer?

Developers pay for computation with cycles, which are created by converting ICP. Users generally do not pay a per-transaction gas fee the way they do on many other chains, because the app's canister covers its own running costs. Individual apps may still charge their own fees.

Which are the biggest dApps on ICP?

Based on our listings, the largest native DeFi apps at the time of writing are Liquidium for lending, ICPSwap and ICDex for trading, and 1sec for bridging. Total DeFi TVL on the chain is small, about $7.7M at the time of writing, so liquidity can be thin.

Does the Internet Computer have DAOs?

Yes. Service Nervous Systems are the chain's DAO framework, letting developers hand control of a dapp to token holders who vote on its direction. The network as a whole is governed by the NNS DAO, where staked ICP carries voting power.

What is the largest dApp on ICP by TVL?

Bitget is the largest dApp on ICP by total value locked, with $5.93B across all the chains it supports. It is followed by Gate ($5.91B) and Gate US ($53.9M). TVL figures come from DefiLlama and change daily.

Which dApp on ICP has the highest DappsAtlas score?

Gate has the highest score at 7.7/10, ahead of Bitget (7.6) and Internet Computer (7.3). Scores weigh security, ease of use, fees and features, and are based only on facts we could verify.

How many dApps are on ICP?

DappsAtlas tracks 24 dApps on ICP. Of these, 24 have a full review and 11 report value locked, $11.9B in total, counting value on every chain they support.

What are the most common types of dApps on ICP?

DEXes (4), Centralized Exchanges (3) and Social (3) are the largest categories on ICP, by number of projects.

Which dApps on ICP grew the most this week?

Among dApps with at least $1M locked, Bitget had the biggest 7-day TVL gain (+1.6%) and WaterNeuron the biggest drop (−5.5%). Combined TVL moved −0.5% over the same seven days.

What is the average score for dApps on ICP?

The 17 rated dApps on ICP average 5.8 out of 10. Of these, 0 score 8 or higher and 3 score below 5.
