Governance incentives are the tools that encourage token holders to take part in running a blockchain or dApp. Instead of leaving votes to a small group, these projects offer rewards, vote-weighted yield or simple DAO tooling so that more people take part in decisions such as treasury spending, reward distribution and protocol upgrades. The six dApps on this page cover Bitcoin-linked, Solana, Initia, VeChain, Internet Computer and multichain ecosystems.
Most work in one of two ways. Some are governance infrastructure: Realms on Solana and Service Nervous Systems on the Internet Computer let teams set up a DAO, create proposals and hand control to token holders. Others sit on top of a network's voting system and pass on rewards, such as Mezo Earn, Cabal and veDelegate, where users lock or deposit assets and earn a share of emissions, fees or incentives tied to voting. Their income usually comes from a cut of the yield or protocol fees, or from the network's own token rewards, while pure tooling like Realms and Gardens often runs on a lighter fee model or on community funding.
When comparing, start with what chain you already use, then look at how rewards are paid and for how long tokens are locked. Size matters too: at the time of writing, Mezo Earn shows the highest TVL on our list, at about $64 million, followed by Realms at about $14 million, but TVL says little about contract quality. Check for audits, how much control is automated or delegated, and whether the reward token holds its value. Gardens is worth a look for community funding across several chains, and veDelegate suits VeChain holders who do not want to vote weekly. Nothing here is financial advice, and rewards are never guaranteed.

Frequently asked questions
What are governance incentives in crypto?
A governance incentive is a reward given to people who take part in a protocol's decision-making. Holders usually lock or stake tokens, vote on proposals or on where rewards should flow, and in return receive emissions, fees or bribes. The aim is to get more token holders to vote instead of leaving decisions to a few large wallets.
Do all of these dApps pay rewards for voting?
Not necessarily. Realms and Service Nervous Systems are mainly tooling for creating and running DAOs, so rewards depend on the DAO itself. Mezo Earn, Cabal and veDelegate are built around yield or reward capture linked to voting. Check how each one pays out before assuming there is income.
Is it risky to lock tokens for governance rewards?
Yes. Smart contract bugs, token price swings, lock-up periods and changes to reward rates can all reduce what you get back. Automation apps such as veDelegate also add another contract between you and the underlying protocol. TVL figures change often, so treat them as a rough size guide and not a safety rating.
What does delegating votes mean?
Delegation lets you assign your voting power to another address, such as an expert or a community member, so your tokens still count without you voting on every proposal. Realms supports delegation on Solana. veDelegate goes further on VeChain by automating voting and claiming for you. You should still review who you hand power to, because their votes affect the protocol.
What is conviction voting, as used by Gardens?
Conviction voting is a method where support for a proposal builds up over time as tokens stay staked on it, instead of being decided in one short vote. Gardens uses it in funding pools so that communities can spread shared money across proposals. It tends to favor steady support over last-minute swings.
Are governance rewards taxable or regulated?
Rewards from these dApps are not guaranteed income, and some may be taxed as income where you live. Keep records of claims and check local rules or ask a tax professional. Anything resembling gambling or wagering is a separate matter, and you must be 18+ (21+ in some places) and confirm it is legal where you live.
What is the largest governance incentives dApp by TVL?
Which governance incentives dApp has the highest DappsAtlas score?
Realms has the highest score at 7.2/10, ahead of Mezo Earn (6.8) and veDelegate (6.5). Scores weigh security, ease of use, fees and features, and are based only on facts we could verify.
