Internet Computer Review 2026: Serverless Cloud on a Blockchain

Internet Computer is a layer-1 network that hosts serverless software, called canisters, directly on a decentralized network and is now pitched as sovereign infrastructure for AI-era apps. Its appeal is full-stack hosting on-chain, but much of the ecosystem is still early.

Our verdict on Internet Computer

7.3/10

Internet Computer suits developers and organisations that want to host full applications, including data and logic, on a decentralized network, and it may interest ICP holders who want a say in governance through the NNS. Its main strength is the all-in-one canister model with predictable cycle costs. The main caveat is that the model is unfamiliar, many showcased products are early access or pilot, and the homepage publishes no audit information, so each app needs its own due diligence.

What is Internet Computer?

Internet Computer is a layer-1 network that hosts software and data directly on a decentralized set of nodes. Its native token is ICP. The project, run as a not-for-profit effort according to the homepage, claims more than half a billion dollars of R&D spend behind the technology.

The current pitch is sovereign, agentic infrastructure: serverless cloud for apps where AI agents run inside software and help build it. The homepage highlights a national cloud engine for the Pakistan Digital Authority, a Swiss subnet, a UNDP pilot, and an AI app builder called Caffeine.

The ecosystem list covers 11 apps, including Internet Identity, OpenChat, the OISY wallet and the MULTI/DEX order book exchange. Several are labelled early access, pilot or beta, so the network is a mix of established tools and newer projects.

How Internet Computer works

The Internet Computer runs software as canisters. Each canister combines Wasm bytecode with its own persistent memory, so code and data live together. Canisters talk to each other via function calls and run asynchronously. The project says this lets apps serve web experiences and store data without separate cloud servers or databases.

Computation is paid for in cycles. Users convert ICP tokens into cycles, and the cycles are burned as software runs. ICP is also generated by the network to pay node providers who run the nodes, and to reward participants in governance. The homepage describes this mix of burning and issuance as deflation and inflation working together.

Governance runs through the Network Nervous System. Users lock ICP in the NNS and receive voting neurons, which let them vote on proposals and earn maturity that can later be used to mint new ICP. The project positions the NNS as a decentralized equivalent of ICANN for the ecosystem.

7 features

Key features

01

Canister smart contracts

Canisters pair Wasm code with persistent memory and run asynchronously as software actors. The project describes this as a model where the program is the database.

02

Cycles-based compute

Cycles are burned to pay for computation. Users can buy them with ICP, and the homepage says credit card payments are converted behind the scenes.

03

On-chain governance (NNS)

The Network Nervous System governs the network as an open DAO. ICP holders lock tokens into neurons to vote and earn maturity.

04

Internet Identity login

Internet Identity offers passkey, SSO and other sign-in options for apps on the network, and the homepage says it pioneered passkeys on the network in 2021.

05

Sovereign cloud engines

Cloud engines let enterprises and governments configure private subnets through an online console. Examples cited include a Pakistan government cloud engine and a Swiss subnet.

06

AI app builder

Caffeine lets users describe an app or website to AI, which builds it on the network. The homepage says hundreds of thousands have joined.

07

Wallet and DeFi apps

The listed ecosystem includes OISY, a browser wallet covering ten networks, and MULTI/DEX, an order book exchange with AMM, margin and vaults as network code.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Software and data run on the network itself, which removes separate cloud and database dependencies.
  • Costs are paid in cycles tied to a stable unit (1 trillion cycles is 1 XDR), which makes costs predictable for builders.
  • Open governance through the NNS DAO lets ICP holders vote on network decisions.
  • Internet Identity provides passkey and SSO sign-in across apps.
  • Government and public-sector projects, including Pakistan and a UNDP pilot, show real institutional use cases.
  • A varied app set covers messaging, wallet, exchange and AI building.

Watch out for

  • Cycles, canisters and the NNS differ from the account and gas model of most chains, so there is a learning curve.
  • Several showcased products are marked early access, pilot or beta, so maturity varies across the ecosystem.
  • The homepage reports no audit information for the network or its apps, so users must check each app separately.
  • Heavy focus on sovereign cloud, government and AI positioning may suit enterprises more than everyday crypto users.
  • ICP's supply changes through inflation (node provider and governance rewards) and burning, which makes its economics harder to predict.
  • Staking in the NNS means locking ICP into neurons, which reduces flexibility.

Internet Computer fees

Network usage is paid in cycles, which are made by converting ICP and burned when computation is used. The homepage states that 1 trillion cycles equals 1 XDR, worth about 1.44 USD, so costs are tied to a stable unit instead of a volatile token price.

The homepage does not publish a fee schedule for specific operations. Per-app fees, such as trading fees on MULTI/DEX, are set by each app. Developers can monitor cycle burn and canister data on the network dashboard.

Is Internet Computer safe?

The homepage describes apps as tamperproof, saying network code is guaranteed by math to run as written and that there are no OS, cloud or database dependencies to breach. That is a project claim about the design, not an independent audit result, and no audits are listed for the network.

Apps and tokens on the network carry their own smart-contract, custody and counterparty risk. This applies to wallets and exchanges like OISY and MULTI/DEX. Governance via the NNS means locked ICP in neurons, so staking involves lock-up risk. As with any crypto asset, ICP's price can swing sharply, and readers should check the rules in their own jurisdiction.

6 steps

How to get started with Internet Computer

  1. 1

Read the documentation and quick start on the official site to understand canisters and cycles.

  2. 2

Create an Internet Identity to sign in to apps with a passkey or SSO.

  3. 3

Set up a wallet such as OISY if you want to hold ICP or other assets.

  4. 4

Try an app from the ecosystem list, such as OpenChat or Caffeine, to see how the network behaves.

  5. 5

If building, convert ICP into cycles to fund your canisters, and track usage on the dashboard.

  6. 6

If considering ICP or NNS staking, review how neurons lock tokens and how rewards are earned before committing funds.

Who Internet Computer is for

Developers building web-scale apps without traditional cloud hosting, governments and enterprises exploring sovereign cloud, and crypto users who want to take part in on-chain governance with ICP. Casual users can try apps like OpenChat or OISY, but should look into the risks of each product separately.

Internet Computer FAQs

What is the Internet Computer?

It is a blockchain network built to run software and store data directly on the network, rather than only recording transactions. Apps run as canisters, which the project describes as tamperproof units of serverless software. Its token is ICP.

What are cycles on the Internet Computer?

Cycles are the fuel that powers computation on the network. They are produced by converting ICP and disappear when used. According to the homepage, 1 trillion cycles is worth 1 XDR, a unit defined by the IMF, which it puts at about 1.44 USD.

What is a canister?

A canister bundles Wasm bytecode, which defines the logic, with dedicated persistent memory that holds its state. Canisters can serve web experiences, store and process data, and call each other through function calls. Many are standalone apps.

What is the NNS?

The Network Nervous System is the network's on-chain governance and orchestration system, described as one of the largest DAOs. Holders lock ICP in the NNS and receive voting neurons, through which they can earn rewards by voting.

What apps run on the Internet Computer?

The homepage lists apps including Internet Identity for passkey and SSO sign-in, OpenChat for messaging, OISY as a multi-chain wallet, MULTI/DEX as an order book exchange, and Caffeine as an AI app builder. It also lists sovereign cloud projects with Pakistan and a Swiss subnet.

Is the Internet Computer safe?

The network is described as run by a not-for-profit, with governance through the NNS DAO. The homepage does not name audits or a formal ownership structure for the network itself. Anyone considering ICP should check the individual apps and the risks of any token.
