IoTeX Review 2026: A DePIN and Real-World AI Layer-1

IoTeX is an EVM-compatible Layer-1 blockchain focused on DePIN and real-world AI, connecting data from physical machines to AI models. It offers a wide toolset, but its claims about adoption are self-reported.

Our verdict on IoTeX

7.2/10

IoTeX suits developers and DePIN-focused users who want an EVM chain built around machine data, device identity and AI. Its main strength is a coherent niche with a full stack of wallet, bridge, staking and tooling. The main caveat is that adoption figures are self-reported and no audits are listed, so treat the AI and DePIN claims with caution and do your own checks before staking or bridging.

What is IoTeX?

IoTeX is a blockchain platform that describes itself as the open ecosystem for real-world AI. It targets data from physical machine networks, a field often called DePIN, and aims to feed that data into AI agents, physical AIs and models.

IOTX launched in 2018 as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum. The IoTeX mainnet went live a year later, and the native IOTX token took over paying for gas and securing the network.

The homepage lists a broad stack: the chain, ioID for device identity, QuickSilver AI, the Trio multimodal model, the ioPay wallet, an explorer, the ioTube bridge and the mimo DEX. It reports 423 ecosystem projects and 41M+ DePIN devices, though these figures are self-reported. The project does not publish audit reports on its homepage.

How IoTeX works

IoTeX is a Layer-1 blockchain that runs EVM-compatible smart contracts. Users and apps pay gas in the native IOTX token, and holders can stake IOTX and vote on governance through dedicated portals.

The project's pitch is that AI models need live data from the physical world rather than only scraped historical data. Machines such as sensors, drones and smart devices can be given an on-chain identity through ioID, and their data can be used by apps, agents and models.

On top of the chain sit tools such as W3bstream for connecting device data, QuickSilver AI for AI workloads and the Trio model. DePINscan tracks DePIN projects and devices across the wider ecosystem.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Clear niche focus on DePIN and real-world AI rather than a generic chain.
  • EVM-compatible, so Ethereum tools and contracts are familiar to developers.
  • Operating since 2017 with a mainnet live since 2019.
  • Full ecosystem stack: wallet, explorer, bridge, DEX, staking and governance.
  • Open-source core client in Go.
  • Device identity layer (ioID) targets a specific problem for machine data.

Watch out for

  • No audit is listed for the protocol in the aggregated data, and the project does not publish an audit summary on its homepage.
  • The homepage ecosystem figures (market value, trading volume, device counts) are self-reported and not independently verified here.
  • DePIN and real-world AI is a young, competitive niche, so adoption of the ecosystem is uncertain.
  • Bridging assets through ioTube adds smart-contract and validator risk, as with any cross-chain bridge.
  • The product line is broad (chain, ID, AI model, wallet, bridge, DEX), which can be confusing for newcomers.
  • IOTX trades at a low unit price and low reported daily volume in one search snippet, which may mean thin liquidity.

IoTeX fees

The project does not publish a fee schedule. As on other EVM chains, users pay gas in IOTX for transactions, and the actual cost is visible in a wallet or on the IoTeXScan explorer before confirming.

Bridge, DEX and staking fees depend on the specific product (ioTube, mimo Dex, the staking portal) and are shown in those interfaces rather than on the homepage.

Is IoTeX safe?

The aggregated data lists no audits for IoTeX, and the homepage does not publish audit reports, a bug bounty or team details. Readers should check the documentation and the open-source repository for security information before relying on it.

Using the network involves the usual risks: wallet key management, smart-contract bugs in apps and the mimo DEX, and bridge risk when using ioTube. Staking exposes you to delegate choice and token price volatility. The project is not a regulated financial service. Check the rules where you live.

6 steps

How to get started with IoTeX

  1. 1

Install the ioPay mobile wallet or another supported wallet and create an account, storing the recovery phrase offline.

  2. 2

Acquire IOTX through an exchange or bridge assets in via ioTube.

  3. 3

Check balances and transactions on the IoTeXScan explorer.

  4. 4

Explore apps and tools through the IoTeX Hub.

  5. 5

Use the staking portal to delegate IOTX if you want to help secure the network and read the terms first.

  6. 6

Developers can start in the dev portal and docs to build on the chain or with ioID.

Who IoTeX is for

IoTeX is for developers building DePIN or AI apps that use real-world data, and for token holders interested in staking and governance on a niche Layer-1. It is less suited to users who want a large, general-purpose DeFi ecosystem.

IoTeX FAQs

What is IoTeX?

IoTeX is a blockchain platform that positions itself as infrastructure for real-world AI and DePIN (decentralized physical infrastructure networks). Its mainnet launched in 2019, after IOTX first existed as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum in 2018.

What is the IOTX token used for?

IOTX is the native token. It pays for gas, is used for staking to help secure the network, and is used in governance. It is also the token listed on the homepage under its own page.

Is IoTeX EVM compatible?

The IoTeX core software is described as an EVM blockchain offering 1000 TPS with instant 1-block finality. That means standard Ethereum-style smart contracts and tools should work on it.

Can I stake IOTX?

The homepage links to a staking portal and a governance portal, and offers a path to become a delegate. Specific reward rates are not stated publicly, so check the portal for current figures.

What is ioTube?

ioTube is the cross-chain bridge in the IoTeX ecosystem, used to move digital assets between IoTeX and other chains. Bridges carry smart-contract risk, so move only what you are comfortable with.

Which wallets work with IoTeX?

ioPay is the project's mobile wallet, and the homepage also lists a page of supported wallets. The IoTeX Hub is a gateway to the ecosystem's apps and tools.
