Cosmos is not one blockchain but a network of independent chains built with a shared toolkit, the Cosmos SDK, which is usually paired with a Tendermint-style (CometBFT) consensus engine. Each chain is application-specific, so it picks its own validators, rules and fee token. The chains talk to each other through IBC, a standard for moving tokens and messages between them. Cosmos is not EVM-based by default, though individual chains can add EVM support.

Because the ecosystem is made of many chains, there is no single Cosmos fee token. ATOM is the main token of the Cosmos Hub, and other chains use their own, such as AKT on Akash Network and OM on Mantra. Fees are set by each chain, and staking is a common way to help secure a network and earn rewards. Staking carries risks, including price swings and unbonding periods.

On this page, liquid staking is a major theme, with Stride, Quicksilver Protocol, StaFi and Orchai LST letting users keep a tradable receipt token while staked. Other native projects include THORChain DEX for cross-chain swaps, Gravity Bridge and Wormhole for moving assets between networks, Akash Network for rented cloud compute, Mantra for real-world asset tokenisation, and Hydro Inflow, a yield vault on Neutron. Many of the largest entries, including Bitget, Gate and SwissBorg, are centralized exchanges that support Cosmos assets and hold your funds in custody.

Cosmos Network Guide: Chains, IBC and ATOM in 2026

Cosmos is an ecosystem of independent blockchains, not one chain that processes every app and token. Learn how the Cosmos Hub, Cosmos SDK and IBC fit together, what ATOM does, and how to assess transfers, staking and risks in 2026.

Frequently asked questions

What is Cosmos and how is it different from Ethereum?

Cosmos is a network of independent blockchains built with a shared toolkit, often called the Interchain Stack, rather than a single chain. The Cosmos Hub is one chain in that network, and ATOM is its main token. Many other Cosmos chains have their own tokens.

What is IBC?

IBC, short for Inter-Blockchain Communication, is the standard Cosmos chains use to send tokens and messages to each other. It lets separate chains exchange assets without relying on a single central chain. Cross-chain tools like Gravity Bridge and Wormhole extend this to networks outside Cosmos, such as Ethereum.

Is Cosmos EVM-compatible?

Not by default. Cosmos chains are usually built with the Cosmos SDK and can choose their own execution environment, so some chains add EVM support and many do not. Check the specific chain and its wallet requirements before you use an app.

What token do I need to pay fees on Cosmos?

Each Cosmos chain sets its own fee token and fee rules, so there is no single gas token for the whole ecosystem. ATOM is used on the Cosmos Hub, while chains such as Akash Network use AKT and Mantra uses OM. Check the fee token of the chain you are using before you send a transaction.

Which Cosmos dApps are used for staking?

Stride and Quicksilver Protocol are Cosmos-focused liquid staking protocols that give you a receipt token while your assets stay staked. StaFi offers liquid staking across several chains, and Orchai LST covers staking on Oraichain. Staking carries risks, including price swings, smart contract bugs and unbonding delays, so read each protocol's terms first.

Why are so many exchanges listed on this Cosmos page?

Many are centralized exchanges, such as Bitget, Gate, SwissBorg and Bitrue, which support Cosmos assets for deposits or trading. They hold your funds in custody, unlike on-chain apps such as THORChain DEX, Stride or Akash Network. Check each platform's regulation and availability in your country before you sign up.

What is the largest dApp on Cosmos by TVL?

Bitget is the largest dApp on Cosmos by total value locked, with $5.93B across all the chains it supports. It is followed by Gate ($5.91B) and SwissBorg ($812M). TVL figures come from DefiLlama and change daily.

Which dApp on Cosmos has the highest DappsAtlas score?

Gate has the highest score at 7.7/10, ahead of THORChain DEX (7.7) and Bitget (7.6). Scores weigh security, ease of use, fees and features, and are based only on facts we could verify.

How many dApps are on Cosmos?

DappsAtlas tracks 28 dApps on Cosmos. Of these, 28 have a full review and 14 report value locked, $12.9B in total, counting value on every chain they support.

What are the most common types of dApps on Cosmos?

Centralized Exchanges (9), Staking (5) and DEXes (2) are the largest categories on Cosmos, by number of projects.

Which dApps on Cosmos grew the most this week?

Among dApps with at least $1M locked, Bitget had the biggest 7-day TVL gain (+1.6%) and Flipster the biggest drop (−28.0%). Combined TVL moved −0.9% over the same seven days.

What is the average score for dApps on Cosmos?

The 20 rated dApps on Cosmos average 6.6 out of 10. Of these, 0 score 8 or higher and 0 score below 5.
