WAX is a delegated proof-of-stake blockchain launched in 2017. It is built on EOS-style software, so it is not an EVM chain. Token holders vote for a limited group of block producers, who validate transactions and produce blocks. The network was designed for e-commerce and NFT collectibles, aiming for quick, low-friction transactions. Wallets and contracts follow the EOS model, not Ethereum's.

The native token is WAXP. It is used for staking, for voting on block producers and for paying for network resources. WAX uses a resource system of CPU, NET and RAM rather than a per-transaction gas charge, so the cost of using the chain depends on how much of those resources an account holds or rents. Many WAX dApps accept WAXP directly for purchases and trades.

The WAX ecosystem is known mainly for NFTs and games, with a smaller DeFi side. AtomicHub, NFT Hive and NeftyBlocks are NFT marketplaces, and Alien Worlds is the best-known play-to-earn game, joined by Warsaken, R-Planet and Warspace. For trading, Alcor Exchange and DefiBox are the main DEXes, with Taco Studios as a smaller option. DeFi TVL was about $309,374 at the time of writing, and our site lists 27 dApps on the chain.

Frequently asked questions

What is the WAX blockchain?

WAX is a delegated proof-of-stake blockchain that is compatible with EOS software. It launched in 2017 and was built for e-commerce and NFT collectibles. Its native token is WAXP.

Is WAX an EVM chain?

No. WAX follows the EOS design, not the Ethereum Virtual Machine. Ethereum wallets and Solidity contracts do not work on it directly. Users need a WAX-compatible wallet, and developers write contracts for the EOS-style virtual machine.

What is the WAXP token used for?

WAXP is the native token. It is used for staking, for voting on block producers and for paying for network resources. Many WAX dApps also take it as payment, including NFT marketplaces such as AtomicHub and NFT Hive.

Do I pay gas fees on WAX?

WAX uses a resource model like EOS's, in which accounts use CPU, NET and RAM instead of paying a gas fee on each transaction. The resources are obtained by staking or renting WAXP. In practice, many everyday actions feel close to free for users, although the details depend on the account and the dApp.

What are the most popular dApps on WAX?

Based on the listings on this page, the biggest names are Alcor Exchange and DefiBox for trading, AtomicHub for NFTs, and Alien Worlds for play-to-earn gaming. Warsaken, R-Planet and Warspace are among the other WAX games listed here.

How big is DeFi on WAX?

The total value locked in WAX DeFi was about $309,374 at the time of writing, which is small. It sits mostly in the DEXes Alcor Exchange and DefiBox. Most activity on the chain is in NFTs and games, which hold little locked value.
