Neo is an open-source smart contract blockchain that launched as AntShares before being renamed. Its Neo N3 network uses delegated Byzantine Fault Tolerance (dBFT): elected consensus nodes vote on each block, which gives fast finality without mining. Neo N3 is not EVM-based. It has its own virtual machine and developer tooling, so Ethereum contracts need to be rewritten rather than copied over.

The network has two tokens. NEO is the main token, used for staking exposure and governance voting. GAS pays for transactions and contract execution. Fees are paid in GAS rather than NEO, so users need a small GAS balance to interact with dApps.

DeFi on Neo is small. Total value locked was about $921,000 at the time of writing. The two biggest apps on our list are Forthewin Network, which runs the FTW Swap DEX, ONEO NEO deposits and the FTW fun meme launcher, and Flamingo Finance, which covers trading, earning and borrowing. Poly Network, a cross-chain bridge, and Blockchain Cuties, a multi-chain collectible NFT game, also support Neo. Expect thin liquidity and a limited choice of apps compared with larger chains.

Frequently asked questions

What is Neo?

Neo is an open-source smart contract blockchain. It was originally launched as AntShares and later renamed Neo. Developers use it to build decentralized applications, and holders can use the NEO token for staking exposure and governance-related roles.

What consensus does Neo use?

Neo uses delegated Byzantine Fault Tolerance (dBFT). A group of elected consensus nodes agrees on each block, so blocks are final once they are produced and there is no mining. This differs from proof-of-work chains, where a block can be reorganized after it is published.

What are NEO and GAS used for?

Neo has two native tokens. NEO represents a stake in the network and is tied to governance and voting. GAS is used to pay for transactions and smart contract execution. Check current tokenomics on Neo's official documentation before acting on them.

Is Neo compatible with Ethereum smart contracts?

Neo N3 is not EVM-based, so it has its own virtual machine and contract tooling, and Ethereum contracts do not run on it unchanged. The search results mention Neo X, a separate EVM-compatible effort tied to the Neo ecosystem. Treat it as a different network from Neo N3 and read its documentation for details.

Which dApps can I use on Neo?

Our listing for Neo includes 8 dApps. The biggest by DeFi TVL are Forthewin Network and Flamingo Finance, both DEX-focused. Poly Network (a cross-chain bridge) and Blockchain Cuties (a collectible NFT game) also support Neo alongside other chains.

How big is DeFi on Neo?

Total DeFi TVL on Neo was about $921,000 at the time of writing. That is small next to the large smart contract chains, so liquidity is thin and prices on swaps can move more on bigger trades. Check pool depth before you trade.

Is it safe to bridge assets to Neo?

Bridges add smart contract and custody risk on top of the chains they connect. Poly Network is suited to users who understand those risks. Only move amounts you can afford to lose, and check the bridge's current status and supported routes first.

What is the largest dApp on Neo by TVL?

NeoBurger is the largest dApp on Neo by total value locked, with $512K across all the chains it supports. It is followed by Forthewin Network ($426K) and Flamingo Finance ($339K). TVL figures come from DefiLlama and change daily.

Which dApp on Neo has the highest DappsAtlas score?

Neo has the highest score at 6.5/10, ahead of Forthewin Network (5.8) and Flamingo Finance (5.5). Scores weigh security, ease of use, fees and features, and are based only on facts we could verify.

How many dApps are on Neo?

DappsAtlas tracks 7 dApps on Neo. Of these, 7 have a full review and 4 report value locked, $1.44M in total, counting value on every chain they support.

What are the most common types of dApps on Neo?
