Collateral management dApps let people lock crypto assets in smart contracts so those assets can back something else: a loan, a line of credit, an insurance product or a service run by another network. Instead of a bank or clearing house holding the collateral, code sets the rules for how it is deposited, valued, penalized and released. This category is small on our site and currently covers two Ethereum protocols.
The two take different approaches. Symbiotic runs shared collateral markets, where deposits placed in curated vaults can support credit, insurance, stablecoin and real-world-asset products at the same time. Anvil is more focused: users lock crypto to issue fully secured credit, such as digital letters of credit, for payments and lending. Revenue generally comes from fees on the credit or services built on the collateral, and depositors may earn rewards in return for taking on the risk that their funds could be penalized if something fails.
When comparing options, start with what your collateral is exposed to: which services it backs, how losses are handled and how easily you can withdraw. Look at total value locked, which at the time of writing is far higher for Symbiotic than for Anvil, along with audits, who curates the vaults and how long the protocol has operated. Also check whether the product fits your goal, since Symbiotic suits depositors seeking shared-security exposure while Anvil suits those wanting secured credit instruments. None of this is financial advice, and you should only commit funds you can afford to lose.

Frequently asked questions
What is collateral management in DeFi?
Collateral management in DeFi means locking crypto assets in smart contracts so they can back loans, credit lines, insurance or other obligations. The rules for how the collateral is held, valued and released are written in code rather than handled by a bank or broker.
What is the difference between Symbiotic and Anvil?
Symbiotic is a shared-security and collateral-markets protocol on Ethereum, where deposits in curated vaults can back several kinds of services. Anvil is narrower: users lock crypto to issue fully secured credit, such as digital letters of credit. Both involve collateral, but they serve different purposes.
Is collateral management in DeFi safe?
No. Smart contract bugs, mistakes in how risk is set up, and the failure of the services your collateral backs can all cause losses. Deposits may also be locked or reduced if something goes wrong, so read each protocol's documentation on penalties and withdrawal terms first.
How do these protocols earn money?
Usually through fees tied to the services built on the collateral, such as credit issuance, or through rewards paid by the networks and products that use the deposits. The exact model differs by protocol, so check how any yield is generated and who pays it.
How much value is locked in these protocols?
Total value locked shows how much capital a protocol holds. At the time of writing, Symbiotic holds about $308.9M and Anvil about $15.0M. A larger figure suggests wider use but does not guarantee safety, so audits, vault curation and track record matter as well.
Are collateral management dApps related to crypto casinos?
No. They are DeFi infrastructure for credit, insurance and similar uses, not gambling products. If you use crypto for online gambling elsewhere, you must be 18 or older (21 or older in some places) and should confirm that it is legal where you live.
What is the largest collateral management dApp by TVL?
Which collateral management dApp has the highest DappsAtlas score?
Symbiotic has the highest score at 7.4/10, ahead of Anvil (6.8) and Babylon Miner (6.4). Scores weigh security, ease of use, fees and features, and are based only on facts we could verify.
How many collateral management dApps does DappsAtlas track?
DappsAtlas tracks 3 collateral management dApps. Of these, 3 have a full review and 2 report value locked, $301M in total.
What chains do most collateral management dApps run on?
What is the average score for collateral management dApps?
The 3 rated collateral management dApps average 6.9 out of 10. Of these, 0 score 8 or higher and 0 score below 5.
