Our verdict on Anvil

6.8/10

Anvil suits DeFi users and businesses who want to back payments, credit or guarantees with crypto collateral instead of a credit check. Its strength is a focused, collateral-first design on Ethereum with listed audits, an SDK and open documentation. The main caveat is limited verifiable detail here: fees are unpublished, TVL is modest at about $15 million, and collateral remains exposed to price swings and smart-contract risk. Read the audits and docs before depositing.

What is Anvil?

Anvil describes itself as a universal collateral layer. It is a DeFi protocol on Ethereum for onchain collateral management, letting users issue fully secured credit. DefiLlama files it under Collateral Management and lists it since April 2025.

The pitch is that digital assets can secure financial commitments across consumer finance, commerce and enterprise operations. The homepage shows examples like buy now pay later, a vehicle loan, event reservations and invoice-backed letters of credit.

DefiLlama shows about $15 million in TVL, down 4.3% over seven days, and two audits. The ANVL governance token has its own forum and proposals. A search result reports a $5 million token purchase led by Founders Fund, which we could only see as a snippet and have not verified.

How Anvil works

Anvil is a set of Ethereum smart contracts. A user locks collateral, such as WETH, wstETH or cbBTC, and the protocol issues a secured commitment against it. The main example is a letter of credit (LOC): a guarantee to a named beneficiary with a set value and expiration date.

Because the collateral is locked onchain, the beneficiary can rely on the promise without a credit check on the user. In the homepage examples, collateral is released when a reservation ends or comes back as a loan is paid down. A loan example shows a 137% collateral ratio.

Businesses can build this into their own products through an SDK. The business sets terms such as beneficiary and expiration, and the customer chooses the amount and what backs it. Those examples are illustrations, so confirm actual mechanics in the docs.

6 features

Key features

01

Fully secured credit

Users lock crypto as collateral to issue fully secured credit. The collateral backs a commitment instead of relying on a credit pull.

02

Digital letters of credit

A guarantee backed by locked collateral, with a beneficiary, a value and an expiration set when it is created. A letter of credit is the primary example given.

03

Vaults and collateral pools

The site lists a collateral vault and time-based collateral pools among its products, alongside the main app.

04

Enterprise SDK

An SDK lets businesses add collateral flows to their products. The homepage says no blockchain code is needed and real-time data is built in.

05

Wide use cases

Homepage examples cover buy now pay later, vehicle loans, event reservations and B2B invoice guarantees.

06

Token governance

ANVL holders can use a governance forum and proposals. The docs, GitHub and whitepaper are linked from the site.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Clear focus: secured credit and collateral management rather than a broad feature set.
  • Two audits are listed on DefiLlama, and the site presents the contracts as audited.
  • Open-source resources: docs, SDK, GitHub and a whitepaper are linked from the site.
  • Collateral-backed model means no credit pull in the loan example.
  • Enterprise SDK aims to let businesses add collateral flows without writing blockchain code.
  • Governance forum and proposals give token holders a voice.

Watch out for

  • Only two audits are listed on DefiLlama, and the project does not name the auditors or link the reports.
  • Letters of credit and time-based collateral pools are less familiar than lending or swapping, so there is a learning curve.
  • Overcollateralization ties up capital; the homepage example shows a 137% collateral ratio on a loan.
  • Much of the homepage appears to be product mockups, so real-world usage is hard to verify from public sources alone.
  • TVL is modest at about $15 million and fell 4.3% over seven days.
  • Collateral is locked in smart contracts on Ethereum, so contract bugs and collateral price swings remain risks.

Anvil fees

Anvil's fees are not published. The homepage mockups show a 4.9% APR on a sample vehicle loan and a $8 service fee on a sample checkout, but these are illustrative, not a confirmed fee schedule.

Before using the protocol, check the app and the docs for protocol fees, network gas costs on Ethereum, and any terms set by the business that integrates Anvil.

Is Anvil safe?

DefiLlama lists two audits and the homepage describes audited smart contracts, production-grade infrastructure and a Security page. The project does not name the auditors or give findings, so readers should open the audit reports themselves. Collateral sits in smart contracts, so a contract flaw is a real risk, as is a drop in collateral value.

The project does not mention any hacks or incidents. They also do not state the project's regulatory status. Letter-of-credit and credit products may fall under financial rules in some places, so check what applies where you live. This is not financial advice.

6 steps

How to get started with Anvil

  1. 1

Read the docs and whitepaper on the Anvil site to understand how letters of credit and collateral pools work.

  2. 2

Check the Security page and the listed audits for the contracts you plan to use.

  3. 3

Set up an Ethereum wallet and hold a supported collateral asset such as WETH, wstETH or cbBTC.

  4. 4

Open the Anvil app and review the terms for any collateral position: beneficiary, expiration, value and collateral ratio.

  5. 5

Start with a small amount to learn how creation and redemption work, and keep ETH for gas.

  6. 6

Monitor your collateral value and expiry dates, and join the forum if you want to follow governance.

Who Anvil is for

Anvil is for crypto-literate users who hold assets like WETH or wstETH and want secured credit, and for businesses or developers exploring collateral-backed payments, reservations or invoicing. It is less suited to people wanting simple swaps or yield, or those uncomfortable locking collateral in smart contracts.

Anvil FAQs

What is Anvil?

Anvil is a DeFi protocol for onchain collateral management. Users lock digital assets in smart contracts to back financial commitments, such as a letter of credit, so the beneficiary is covered without a credit check.

What is a letter of credit (LOC) on Anvil?

A digital letter of credit is a guarantee backed by locked collateral. The homepage example shows a creator setting a beneficiary, an expiration date and a value, then posting WETH as backing. The project does not describe every edge case, so read the docs for exact redemption rules.

What is the ANVL token for?

ANVL is Anvil's governance token. The site links to a governance forum, proposals and an ANVL token page. Beyond governance, the project does not detail the token's utility.

Which blockchain does Anvil run on?

DefiLlama lists Anvil on Ethereum only. The homepage examples use assets such as WETH, cbBTC and wstETH as collateral.

Is Anvil audited?

DefiLlama lists two audits, and the homepage describes the contracts as audited. Audits reduce risk but do not remove it, so check the Security page and the audit reports before depositing.

Who has invested in Anvil?

A search result from a crypto news site reports that Founders Fund led a $5 million ANVL token purchase alongside an enterprise SDK launch. We have only the search snippet, so treat the details as unverified.
