ActiveAmbient Review 2026: Singleton DEX With Security Baggage
Ambient (formerly CrocSwap) is a single-contract DEX with concentrated liquidity and limit orders, live on Scroll, Ethereum and several other chains. It has a distinctive design but modest TVL and a history of security incidents.

Our verdict on Ambient
5.8/10Ambient suits experienced DeFi users who want to try a singleton AMM with concentrated liquidity and limit-style positions, especially on Scroll. Its main strength is the technical design, which includes hooks, flash accounting and knockout liquidity. The main caveat is security and scale: no audits are listed, TVL is about $1.9 million, and public reporting report a 2024 domain hijack and a separate reported exploit. Newcomers should start small and verify the site address before connecting a wallet.

What is Ambient?
Ambient is a decentralized exchange and AMM previously known as CrocSwap. DefiLlama categorizes it as a DEX and describes it as a "Zero-to-One Decentralized Trading Protocol". It has been listed since June 2023 and reports TVL of roughly $1.9 million across Scroll, Ethereum, Plume, Blast, Canto and Swellchain.
Its selling point is the architecture. Public reporting describes it as a singleton AMM with hooks, flash accounting and limit orders, and the docs cover concentrated liquidity, knockout liquidity and governance policy. A July 2023 report says it raised a $6.5 million seed round.
The record also includes security incidents. In October 2024 the project's domain was reported hijacked, with the issue limited to the front end and user funds said to be safe. A separate result reports an Ethereum exploit of about 83.72 ETH. DefiLlama lists no audits, though that may reflect missing data rather than none being done.
How Ambient works
Ambient is an automated market maker. Instead of an order book, traders swap against pools of tokens supplied by liquidity providers, and prices move along a formula as the pool balance changes. Liquidity providers earn a share of swap fees.
Ambient puts its pools in a single contract, which public reporting call a singleton design. That lets several operations settle together using flash accounting, which can reduce gas costs. Liquidity can be supplied across a price range or as full-range "ambient" liquidity.
The docs also reference knockout liquidity, a position that is removed once the price crosses a set level, behaving like a limit order. Hooks let pools be extended with custom logic, though the project does not say which hooks are live.
6 features
Key features
01
Singleton AMM design
Public reporting describes Ambient as a singleton AMM, meaning pools live inside one contract. This design is aimed at lower gas costs for multi-pool operations.
02
Concentrated liquidity
Liquidity providers can place capital in price ranges, as well as in a full-range "ambient" form. This is the standard concentrated-liquidity model with an added full-range option.
03
Knockout liquidity and limit orders
The docs list knockout liquidity, which works like a limit order inside a pool. Public reporting also describe limit orders as part of the design.
04
Hooks and flash accounting
Public reporting mentions hooks and flash accounting, which let developers customize pool behavior and settle balances efficiently within a transaction.
05
Gas-efficient LP calls
The docs describe flat calls for simple LP operations such as minting ambient or concentrated liquidity, to reduce gas.
06
Multi-chain deployment
DefiLlama lists Scroll, Ethereum, Plume, Blast, Canto and Swellchain, so users can trade on several networks.
Pros and cons
What we like
- Distinctive singleton AMM design with hooks, flash accounting and limit-style knockout liquidity
- Concentrated and full-range liquidity options for LPs
- Deployed on several chains, including Scroll and Ethereum
- Documentation covers concepts and developer contract interfaces
- Reported $6.5 million seed round in 2023 shows early backing
- No token means no token-emission pressure on the protocol
Watch out for
- DefiLlama lists no audits for the protocol
- TVL is about $1.9M, which is small for a multi-chain DEX and suggests thin liquidity on many pairs
- Public reporting report a front-end domain hijack in October 2024 and a separate reported exploit of roughly 83.72 ETH
- TVL fell 7.2% over seven days at the time of the data
- No native token is listed, so there is no governance or incentive token to follow
- Its homepage provided is minimal, so fee tiers and product details need to be checked in the docs
Ambient fees
Swap fees, LP fee tiers and any protocol fee are not, so we cannot state them. Users would see the applicable fee for a pool in the trading app before confirming a swap, and in the documentation.
Normal network gas applies on every chain. The docs say flat LP calls are meant to save gas on simple liquidity actions. No token is listed, so there are no token-related fee discounts to account for.
Is Ambient safe?
DefiLlama lists zero audits for Ambient. That may be a gap in the data, so check the docs for audit reports before depositing meaningful funds. Ambient is non-custodial, so users keep their tokens in their own wallets, but liquidity pools remain exposed to smart-contract risk.
Public reporting report two incidents. In October 2024 the ambient.finance domain was reportedly hijacked, which the project said affected only the front end and left user funds safe. A separate result reports an exploit on Ethereum in which about 83.72 ETH (roughly $110.6K) was drained. The project does not give a full account of the second event, so read the project's statements. Always verify the site address through official channels and revoke old approvals if you used the site during the incident.
6 steps
How to get started with Ambient
- 1
Confirm you are on the official Ambient site by checking the project's official social account, given the earlier domain hijack.
- 2
Check that DeFi trading is legal where you live and understand the risks of smart-contract use.
- 3
Connect a self-custody wallet and choose a supported network such as Scroll or Ethereum.
- 4
Fund the wallet with the tokens you want to swap plus the native gas token.
- 5
Start with a small swap and review the quoted price, slippage and fee before signing.
- 6
If you add liquidity, read the docs on concentrated, ambient and knockout positions first, and understand impermanent loss.
Who Ambient is for
Ambient is for experienced DeFi users, liquidity providers and developers who are interested in concentrated liquidity, limit-style positions and a singleton AMM. It is less suited to beginners or anyone who wants deep liquidity and a long, clean security record.
Ambient FAQs
What is Ambient Finance?
Ambient is a decentralized exchange and automated market maker that was previously called CrocSwap. Its DefiLlama description is "Zero-to-One Decentralized Trading Protocol". Public reporting describes it as a singleton AMM with hooks, flash accounting and limit orders.
Which blockchains does Ambient run on?
DefiLlama lists Scroll, Ethereum, Plume (mainnet), Blast, Canto and Swellchain. Third-party results mention Ethereum, Scroll and Blast as the main networks. Check the app to see which chains are currently enabled.
Has Ambient Finance been hacked?
Public reporting from October 2024 report that the ambient.finance domain was hijacked and that the issue was isolated to the front end. The project said user funds were safe. A separate result reports an exploit on Ethereum that drained about 83.72 ETH. Read the project's own statements before connecting a wallet.
Does Ambient have a token?
DefiLlama lists no token for Ambient, and no token ticker appears. Treat any token claiming to be an official Ambient token with caution until the project confirms it.
How do I provide liquidity on Ambient?
Liquidity providers can add concentrated or ambient liquidity, and the docs mention flat LP calls for gas efficiency. Knockout liquidity is also referenced in the docs. Exact fee tiers are not, so check the app and docs.
How big is Ambient?
DefiLlama shows TVL of about $1.9 million. One third-party page cited $15M at an earlier point. TVL changes often, so check a live tracker.
