Liquidations are the automated safety mechanism in DeFi lending and leveraged trading. When the collateral behind a loan or position is no longer worth enough to cover the debt, the protocol allows the position to be closed and the collateral sold off. This category covers dApps and tools built around that process, including liquidation bots, protocols with their own liquidation engines, and dashboards that show which positions are at risk.

The mechanics are simple. A smart contract tracks each position's collateral ratio using price feeds, known as oracles. If the ratio drops below a set threshold, anyone can step in as a liquidator, repay some of the debt and receive the collateral at a discount. That discount is the liquidator's reward, and it is paid by the borrower as a penalty. The protocol itself usually earns from borrowing interest, trading fees or a cut of liquidation penalties. Liquidators have costs of their own, such as gas fees and, in some cases, flash loan charges.

There are no dApps listed in this category on our site yet, so we are not naming any leaders at the moment. When entries are added, the points to compare will be: how the liquidation penalty and close factor are set, which oracles are used and how fast they update, how much collateral the protocol can absorb during a sharp drop, whether the contracts have been audited, and what fees apply. Leveraged positions can be wiped out quickly, so use only funds you can afford to lose, and check that these services are legal where you live. Only adults, 18+ or 21+ where required, should use them.

Frequently asked questions

What is a liquidation in DeFi?

A liquidation happens when a loan or leveraged position on a DeFi protocol falls below its required collateral level. The protocol lets third parties repay part or all of the debt and take some of the collateral at a discount. This keeps the protocol from being left with bad debt.

Who performs liquidations?

Usually this is a bot or trader known as a liquidator. They watch positions for ones that have become undercollateralized, repay the debt, and receive the collateral plus a bonus set by the protocol. The borrower bears the cost of that bonus.

What causes a position to get liquidated?

The main drivers are a falling price of your collateral or a rising price of what you borrowed. Volatile markets, thin collateral buffers and slow oracle updates make liquidations more likely. Keeping a healthy margin above the minimum collateral ratio lowers the risk.

What is a liquidation heatmap?

It is a chart that estimates the price levels where many leveraged positions would be force-closed. Traders use it to see where sharp moves could be triggered. It is an estimate built from market data, not a guarantee of where price will go.

Are liquidations risky for the people doing them?

Yes, in a few ways. Liquidators pay gas fees, may rely on flash loans that carry costs, and compete with other bots, so profit is not guaranteed. Smart contract bugs and oracle errors are also risks. For borrowers, the penalty can mean losing a meaningful share of their collateral.

Which liquidation dApps does this page rank?
