Kusama is a blockchain network built with Substrate that works as the canary network for Polkadot. It is a nominated proof-of-stake relay chain: validators secure it, and token holders back them by nominating. Scaling comes from parachains, independent chains that plug into the relay chain and share its security. The relay chain itself is not an EVM environment, though some parachains offer their own contract layers.
The native token is KSM. It pays for network fees, is staked to secure the chain, and is used in governance votes and in parachain slot bonding. Kusama is meant to move faster and take more risk than Polkadot, so upgrades and new features often appear here first. That makes it a good place for experiments, but it also means more change for users to follow.
The dApp ecosystem here is small and centered on staking and wallets. Karura Liquid Staking, from the Acala team, lets KSM holders stake while holding a tradable token. Talisman is a non-custodial wallet covering Kusama, Polkadot and Ethereum. The page also lists multichain services: Ankr, which provides infrastructure and liquid staking, and Bitget, a centralized exchange. Always confirm what each service supports on Kusama before you use it.

Frequently asked questions
What is Kusama?
Kusama is a Substrate-based relay chain that works as the canary network for Polkadot. New runtime upgrades and parachain ideas are tried on it under real economic conditions before they reach Polkadot. It is also a live network with its own token, staking and governance.
Is Kusama EVM compatible?
Kusama's own relay chain is not an EVM chain; it is built on Substrate. Smart contract and EVM-style apps generally run on parachains that connect to it. Check each parachain or app to see which environment it uses.
What is the KSM token used for?
KSM is the native token. It is used for staking through nominated proof of stake, for governance, and for paying network fees. It is also used in the bonding process for parachain slots.
How is Kusama different from Polkadot?
Kusama is often described as Polkadot's proving ground, so it moves faster and accepts more risk. Polkadot is the more conservative network. Teams often launch or test features on Kusama first, which suits experimentation but means more change and possible instability.
Which dApps are listed on Kusama here?
Our Kusama page currently lists five dApps, including Karura Liquid Staking and Talisman. It also lists multichain services such as Bitget and Ankr. Use each dApp's own page to see exactly which networks and features it supports.
Can I stake KSM and still keep liquidity?
Karura Liquid Staking lets KSM holders stake and keep a tradable token in return. Its TVL was about $327,000 at the time of writing, which is small, so check the risks, any unbonding terms and the current state of the product before using it. This is not financial advice.
What is the largest dApp on Kusama by TVL?
Bitget is the largest dApp on Kusama by total value locked, with $5.93B across all the chains it supports. It is followed by Ankr ($23.9M) and Karura Liquid Staking ($314K). TVL figures come from DefiLlama and change daily.
