What EIGEN is
EIGEN is the token of EigenCloud, the platform that was called EigenLayer until its rebrand in 2025. It comes from Eigen Labs, which built its early reputation on restaking on Ethereum. Restaking lets ETH stakers, and holders of staked-ETH tokens, reuse their staked assets to back additional services beyond Ethereum itself.
EigenCloud describes its current direction as a verifiable cloud: a developer platform on Ethereum where applications, including AI inference and autonomous agents, can run with cryptoeconomic guarantees. Instead of asking users to trust a company, the idea is that operators put value at risk and can be penalised if they misbehave.
EIGEN sits at the center of that design. Project documents describe it as an "intersubjective work token", a term for a token that can be penalised for faults that people can agree on but that a smart contract cannot prove by itself. At the time of writing, EIGEN ranked around 181st by market capitalisation, so it is a mid-to-small cap asset, not one of the large networks.
EIGEN is separate from ETH. It is a token issued on Ethereum, not the native coin of its own blockchain.
What the token is used for
Public material points to three roles for EIGEN: staking, slashing and governance.
Staking: operators and stakers can put EIGEN at risk to back services built on the platform. Because the token is staked, there is something to lose if a service is run dishonestly.
Slashing: EigenCloud documentation says EIGEN is used to impose cryptoeconomic penalties on misbehaving nodes. Earlier explainers described a fork-aware model in which bad actors can be slashed through social consensus, meaning the community agrees that a fault occurred, rather than a purely automatic on-chain check.
Governance: third-party explainers describe EIGEN as a governance token as well, giving holders a say in some decisions. In December 2025 the foundation behind the project proposed a governance change aimed at adding new incentives for the token, which shows the token's role is still being refined.
The details of how these functions work in practice, and which services depend on them, change as the platform develops. Check current official documentation before assuming any specific utility or reward.
Supply and tokenomics
The data lists a circulating supply of about 1.02 billion EIGEN and a total supply of about 1.86 billion as of 2026-11-05. No maximum supply is listed, so readers should not assume a hard cap exists. The gap between circulating and total supply means a large share of tokens is not yet in free circulation.
That gap shows up in the valuation figures. At the time of writing, the price was about $0.18, giving a market cap of roughly $184 million. The fully diluted valuation, which assumes all of the total supply is counted, was about $337 million. The difference is a reminder that further token releases could add selling pressure or dilute existing holders, depending on who receives them and when.
The data does not give a detailed allocation split or unlock schedule, so this page does not state one. Anyone assessing EIGEN should read the project's official tokenomics documentation and look for vesting terms, foundation holdings and any changes introduced by governance proposals. Trading volume over 24 hours was about $11.8 million, which is modest relative to the market cap.
Chains and how it is held and traded
EIGEN is issued on Ethereum and Base. Ethereum is the main home of the project's infrastructure, while Base, a layer-2 network, offers cheaper transfers and easier access to some apps.
Because it is a standard token, EIGEN can be held in any wallet that supports the network where the token sits. Holders typically keep it in a self-custody wallet or leave it on an exchange account. Staking or delegating involves interacting with the project's smart contracts through its official app, which carries its own technical and security risks.
Trading happens mainly on centralised exchanges, with additional liquidity on decentralised exchanges on Ethereum and Base. Liquidity is thinner on smaller venues, so large orders can move the price noticeably. When moving EIGEN between exchanges and wallets, check which network the deposit address supports. Sending tokens on the wrong network can result in lost funds.
EIGEN does not have its own chain, mining or validator set. Its security as a token depends on the chain it lives on and on the contracts that govern it.
History and notable events
EigenLayer became one of the best-known projects in Ethereum restaking, and the EIGEN token arrived as the protocol's own asset. Early write-ups from October 2024 described the token's fork-aware, socially driven approach to penalties. The price reached an all-time high of about $5.65 on 2024-12-16.
In June 2025 the team introduced EigenCloud, shifting the pitch from restaking infrastructure toward a broader developer platform for verifiable applications. The rebrand explains why the token is now listed as EigenCloud (previously EigenLayer) and why it appears in AI and infrastructure categories as well as restaking.
In December 2025 the foundation behind the protocol proposed a governance change intended to introduce new incentives for EIGEN. Whether and how such proposals are adopted is a matter of the project's governance process.
Market performance has been weak since the peak. As of 2026-11-05 the price was about 75% lower than a year earlier and about 7% lower over the past week. The all-time low in the data is about $0.148, recorded on 2026-04-05, so the price was only modestly above that level at the time of writing.
Risks
EIGEN carries several risks that readers should weigh for themselves.
Market risk: the token has fallen sharply from its peak, and volatility remains high. A mid-cap token with modest daily volume can swing quickly in either direction.
Dilution risk: with no maximum supply listed and a large portion of total supply not yet circulating, future releases or changes to token economics could affect holders.
Smart contract risk: restaking and staking contracts are complex. Bugs, misconfigurations or exploits could lead to losses, and restaked positions can be exposed to more than one set of rules.
Slashing and governance risk: because penalties partly rely on social agreement, outcomes can depend on human decisions. Governance proposals can also change how the token works.
Strategy risk: the move from restaking to an AI and verifiable cloud platform is a bet on adoption. Competing projects exist in both areas, and demand for the token depends on whether developers actually use the platform.
Nothing here is investment advice. Only commit money you can afford to lose and do your own research.
How to store it safely
Because EIGEN is an Ethereum-based token, standard good practice for Ethereum assets applies.
For meaningful amounts, a hardware wallet is the usual recommendation. It keeps your private keys offline and requires physical confirmation for transactions. Write down the recovery phrase on paper or metal, store it in a safe place, and never type it into a website, chat or email. Anyone who has the phrase controls the funds.
If you stake or delegate, use the project's official app by typing the address yourself or using a bookmark you trust. Fake sites and fake airdrop claims are common around well-known tokens. Read each wallet prompt carefully, especially token approvals, and revoke permissions you no longer need.
Consider using a separate wallet for experimenting with new apps, and keep long-term holdings apart. Test with a small transfer before sending a large amount, and confirm whether you are sending on Ethereum or Base. Leaving tokens on an exchange is convenient but means you depend on that company's security and solvency.
By the numbers

Its fully diluted valuation is $324M, so roughly 55% of the eventual supply is in circulation today; tokens still to be released could add selling pressure.
The price was up 0.2% over 7 days, down 28.1% over 30 days, down 76.7% over the past year. It trades about 97% below its all-time high of $5.65, set on Dec 16, 2024.
About 1.02B EIGEN are in circulation, from a total supply of 1.86B. No hard maximum supply is listed.
24-hour trading volume was about $15.9M, or 9.0% of its market cap: high turnover.
EIGEN has token contracts on 2 chains we track, including Ethereum, Base. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.
EIGEN is linked to EigenCloud, which we cover in our Liquid Restaking rankings. See our EigenCloud page for how the protocol works and how we score it.

EIGEN FAQs
Is EigenCloud the same as EigenLayer?
EigenLayer was the original name of the restaking protocol from Eigen Labs. In 2025 the team introduced EigenCloud as a broader developer platform for verifiable applications, including AI. EIGEN remains the token linked to the project.
What is the EIGEN token used for?
Project documents describe EIGEN as a token that can be staked and slashed to penalise misbehaving operators, and third-party explainers also describe a governance role. The exact mechanics depend on current official documentation and can change through governance.
What is the supply of EIGEN?
The data lists about 1.02 billion tokens in circulation and about 1.86 billion in total as of 2026-11-05. No maximum supply is given, so do not assume a fixed cap.
Which blockchains is EIGEN on?
EIGEN is issued on Ethereum and Base. It does not have its own blockchain, so it is held in wallets that support those networks, and it can be traded on exchanges that list it.
Why is EIGEN far below its all-time high?
The data shows an all-time high of about $5.65 on 2024-12-16 and a price of about $0.18 on 2026-11-05, roughly 75% below a year earlier. This page does not explain every cause, and it does not predict future prices.
Is EIGEN the same as restaked ETH?
Yes, EIGEN is a separate token from ETH. Restaking in the EigenLayer sense involves staked ETH or related tokens, while EIGEN is the project's own asset used for staking, penalties and governance.
What is the market cap of EigenCloud (prev. EigenLayer)?
As of Nov 6, 2026, EigenCloud (prev. EigenLayer) had a market cap of about $177M, ranking #183 among cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. Market cap is price multiplied by circulating supply, so it moves with the price.
What is the all-time high of EIGEN?
EigenCloud (prev. EigenLayer)'s all-time high is $5.65, reached on Dec 16, 2024. Its all-time low is $0.1483 (Apr 5, 2026). Past prices say nothing about future returns.
What is the circulating supply of EIGEN?
As of Nov 6, 2026, about 1.02B EIGEN were in circulation; no fixed maximum supply is listed.
