Our verdict on Velodrome
6.5/10Velodrome suits DeFi users who already use Optimism and are comfortable with liquidity pools, token locks and governance voting. Its main strength is a clear incentive loop in which veVELO voters steer emissions to the pools that need liquidity. The main caveat is that rewards and token value are volatile, and audit and fee details need independent checking before you commit funds. Newcomers should start with small swaps and read the risks first.

What is Velodrome?
Velodrome Finance is a decentralized exchange and automated market maker that operates on Optimism. It offers stable and variable pools for different kinds of trading pairs and uses its VELO token to steer liquidity.
The design builds on Solidly, with changes aimed at fixing issues in that first version. Two tokens carry the system: VELO, an ERC-20 utility token used for liquidity rewards, and veVELO, an NFT that represents locked VELO and voting rights.
The protocol has also been described as a liquidity engine for the Superchain, and coverage mentions a merge with Aerodrome. Readers should check current status and token details before relying on any of this. The team and audit information are not covered here.
How Velodrome works
Velodrome is an automated market maker. Liquidity providers deposit pairs of tokens into pools, and traders swap against those pools at prices set by a formula. Stable pools are meant for assets that should trade near one another, and variable pools handle more volatile pairs.
To attract liquidity, the protocol issues VELO emissions. Providers stake their liquidity positions in a reward pool to qualify. The share each pool receives is decided by votes from veVELO holders, so pools with more votes pay out more.
Anyone can lock VELO to receive veVELO, an ERC-721 NFT that represents governance rights. Voters direct emissions and can receive protocol fees and voting incentives. This vote-escrow model ties governance power to a commitment of tokens.
6 features
Key features
01
Automated market maker
Swaps run through an automated market maker rather than an order book. Trades execute against liquidity pools funded by users.
02
Stable and variable pools
Pools come in stable and variable types. Stable pools suit assets that trade near the same price, while variable pools suit more volatile pairs.
03
VELO emissions
VELO is distributed to liquidity providers who stake their positions. This rewards those who supply trading liquidity.
04
veVELO governance NFT
Locking VELO produces a veVELO NFT that carries governance rights. Extra tokens can be added to the same NFT later.
05
Emissions voting
veVELO holders vote on which pools receive emissions. Voters can receive protocol fees and voting incentives.
06
Optimism and Superchain focus
Velodrome targets Optimism and has been described as a liquidity engine for the wider Superchain. This focus keeps it close to Optimism's user base.
Pros and cons
What we like
- Clear incentive design: emissions reward providers whose pools attract votes
- Stable and variable pool types fit both pegged and volatile pairs
- veVELO holders can earn protocol fees and voting incentives
- Builds on the Solidly model with changes meant to address its early issues
- VELO is available on centralized and decentralized exchanges
Watch out for
- Emissions-driven rewards depend on VELO token value and on how veVELO holders vote, so liquidity provider yields can change quickly
- Locking VELO into a veNFT ties up capital, and the lock is a position you cannot freely exit
- Audit details, team and fee schedules are not set out in the material reviewed here, so users must check them independently
- The VELO price has fallen far from its all-time high, which reflects token and market risk
- Concentrated on one ecosystem (Optimism and its Superchain), so it is exposed to that network's activity and liquidity
- Similar names, including unrelated shops, make it easy to land on the wrong website
Velodrome fees
The material reviewed here does not set out a fee schedule. Swap fees on an AMM like this are usually set per pool, and users see the exact figure in the swap or pool interface before confirming.
Protocol fees are a part of how rewards work: veVELO voters can receive protocol fees and voting incentives. Network gas costs on Optimism apply on top of any pool fee.
Is Velodrome safe?
Velodrome is a smart-contract protocol, so users keep custody of their tokens in their own wallet but carry contract risk. Audit reports, bug bounty programs and incident history are not covered here, and readers should look them up before depositing. Liquidity providers also face impermanent loss.
The VELO token has dropped sharply from its all-time high, according to market data, which shows price risk for anyone earning or holding it. Locking into veVELO adds a further liquidity constraint. DeFi protocols generally carry regulatory uncertainty, so check the rules where you live. Be careful with look-alike sites and confirm the address you connect your wallet to.
6 steps
How to get started with Velodrome
- 1
Confirm the correct Velodrome Finance website through trusted sources, as similar names exist.
- 2
Set up a wallet that supports Optimism and fund it with ETH for gas.
- 3
Connect the wallet and review the swap interface, checking the pool type and fee shown for your pair.
- 4
To provide liquidity, pick a stable or variable pool, deposit both assets and stake the position to earn VELO emissions.
- 5
To take part in governance, lock VELO to receive a veVELO NFT and vote on which pools get emissions.
- 6
Start with small amounts and read current audit and risk information before committing larger funds.
Who Velodrome is for
Velodrome is for crypto users on Optimism who want to swap tokens, supply liquidity or take part in governance through veVELO. It is better suited to people who understand impermanent loss and token locking than to beginners seeking a simple, fixed-return product.
Velodrome FAQs
What is Velodrome Finance?
Velodrome Finance is a decentralized exchange and automated market maker on Optimism. Users swap tokens against liquidity pools, and liquidity providers earn rewards for supplying assets. Its native token is VELO.
What is veVELO?
Holders lock VELO to receive a veVELO NFT, which gives voting power. Votes decide how weekly VELO emissions are split across pools. Voters can receive protocol fees and voting incentives in return.
What does the VELO token do?
VELO is the ERC-20 utility token used to reward liquidity providers through emissions. Locking it creates veVELO, the governance NFT. Additional VELO can be added to an existing veVELO position at any time.
How is Velodrome related to Solidly?
It is built on the foundation of Solidly, which one source says it improved to fix problems in the first design. It keeps the Solidly-style stable and variable pool types and vote-escrow model. Its Optimism focus and emissions voting are central to how it operates.
How do liquidity providers earn rewards?
Providers deposit assets into a pool and then stake their position to take part in VELO emission rewards. The share a pool receives depends on veVELO votes, and actual rewards depend on the size of the position and its staking status.
Is Velodrome the same as the cycling shop with that name?
No. Velodrome Finance is a DeFi protocol on Optimism. Websites with similar names, such as a track cycling retailer, are unrelated, so confirm the address through trusted sources before connecting a wallet.
Is Velodrome risky?
Yes. Liquidity providers face impermanent loss, smart-contract risk and reward-token price swings. Locking VELO also reduces flexibility. Only use funds you can afford to lose and check current audit information before depositing.
