What Velo is
Velo Labs describes Velo as a federated credit exchange network. The Velo Protocol is the financial layer underneath it. It lets business partners issue digital credits through smart contracts and move value across borders. The stated aim is for partners to transfer value to each other safely, quickly and transparently.
The core idea is collateral-backed digital credit. A partner can issue a credit that corresponds to a fiat currency, backed by collateral, and use it for transfers. The protocol uses the Stellar Consensus Protocol to process and settle transactions, so Stellar is the settlement layer.
The VELO token is the native asset of this system. It is not a general-purpose coin like Bitcoin or Ether, and it does not run its own base chain. It is issued as a token on existing networks.
One point of confusion: Velodrome, a separate decentralized exchange, also has a governance token that trades under the ticker VELO. That is a different project. This page covers the Velo Labs token, which our data classes as a payments and digital-credit asset.
What VELO is used for
The project describes VELO as a utility token that supports the network's operations. Public descriptions mention three main roles: cross-border settlement, staking and governance. Some explainers also describe the token as acting as collateral within the credit system.
In practice, the design ties the token to the protocol's partner network. Businesses that issue or settle digital credits are meant to interact with VELO as part of how the system stays secure and collateralized. Holders may also take part in governance decisions if the protocol offers voting.
The detail of how much of this is live, and how much remains a design goal, is not fully clear from public sources we have. Readers who want specifics should read the project's own documentation and recent updates. They should compare those claims with on-chain activity instead of relying on descriptions alone.
Another stated use case is digital gold. A 2024 announcement described a proposed blockchain-based digital gold system covering tokens, storage and trading. Treat this as a proposal and a business direction, not a guarantee of adoption.
Supply and tokenomics
At the time of writing (as of 2026-11-05), about 17.56 billion VELO are circulating. The total supply is roughly 24.0 billion. No maximum supply is listed, so we cannot confirm a hard cap.
The gap between circulating and total supply matters. About 6.4 billion tokens are outside circulation. The fully diluted valuation is about $89.6 million, against a market cap of about $65.6 million. If those extra tokens enter the market over time, they could dilute existing holders.
The data we hold does not set out the original allocation, vesting schedules or any burn mechanism. We will not guess at them. The project's own tokenomics documents are the right place to check how the supply was split between the team, partners, treasury and public holders, and when locked tokens unlock.
For scale, VELO has a market cap rank of about 366. Its price is about $0.0037, and 24-hour trading volume is about $4.3 million. These figures move constantly and are shown only as a snapshot.
Chains, holding and trading
VELO is issued on two networks: Stellar and BNB Chain. Stellar is where the project says the token's transaction settlement and clearance take place. The BNB Chain version gives holders access to the large ecosystem of wallets and exchanges on that network.
Because the token exists on more than one chain, check which version you hold or want to buy. Sending a token to an address on the wrong network can mean permanent loss. Always match the network setting when depositing or withdrawing.
VELO trades on centralized exchanges, and the BNB Chain version can also appear on decentralized exchanges. Listings and trading pairs change, so check a current market page for the venues that support it. Holding the Stellar version usually requires a wallet that supports Stellar assets and a trustline for the token. The BNB Chain version works with common Ethereum-style wallets.
Trading volume is modest next to major tokens. Thin liquidity can mean wider spreads and noticeable price moves on larger orders.
On tags, data providers list VELO under DeFi, real-world assets, the Stellar ecosystem and the BNB Chain ecosystem. Some also note it in a market-maker portfolio and in an exchange spotlight program. Those tags describe how it is classified, not how it performs.
History and notable events
Public sources we hold do not give an exact launch date for the token, so we leave that out. The project's early materials date to at least mid-2020, when it described a next-generation financial protocol with VELO issued on Stellar.
Price history has been volatile. The data lists a record high of about $2.29 on 2021-03-08 and a low of about $0.00103 on 2022-12-19. The high looks out of scale with the current price range, so treat it with caution and verify historical figures against several sources before drawing conclusions.
What is clear is that the price is far below the early-2021 peak. Over the year to 2026-11-05 the price fell by about 44%, while the preceding seven days showed a gain of about 4%. That is a snapshot, not a trend forecast.
In September 2024, the project announced its entry into the Chinese market, which it framed as a second major market. It proposed a digital gold solution as part of that push. Beyond that, we do not list other partnerships or milestones, because we have no confirmed details to cite.
Risks to understand
VELO carries the usual risks of a small-cap token, plus some specific to its model.
- Price volatility. The token has fallen sharply from earlier levels and can move quickly in either direction.
- Liquidity. Daily volume is small compared with large tokens, which can make it hard to exit larger positions at a fair price.
- Dilution. With roughly 6.4 billion tokens not yet circulating and no stated cap, supply changes could weigh on value.
- Adoption risk. The value of a utility token depends on whether partners actually use the network. Plans such as digital gold or new markets may not turn into real volume.
- Collateral and regulatory risk. Credits tied to fiat currencies and collateral touch payments and financial regulation, which differ between countries and can change.
- Smart contract and bridge risk. Code bugs and issues in moving tokens between chains can cause losses.
- Name confusion. Another token with the VELO ticker exists. Buying the wrong one is a real mistake to avoid.
This page is information, not advice. It makes no prediction about price and does not recommend buying or selling.
How to store VELO safely
Start by confirming which VELO you hold: the Stellar token or the BNB Chain token. Then pick a wallet that supports that network. For Stellar, that means a wallet able to add the asset by trustline. For BNB Chain, any wallet that supports BNB Smart Chain and custom tokens will do.
For anything beyond a small amount, a hardware wallet adds protection because your private keys stay on a separate device. Write down the recovery phrase on paper, store it offline, and never type it into a website or share it with anyone. No legitimate support team will ask for it.
Before a large transfer, send a small test amount first and confirm it arrives. Double-check the network and address, since mistakes are usually irreversible. Verify the token contract address or asset issuer from the project's official channels, so you do not receive a fake token with the same name.
Leaving tokens on an exchange is convenient for trading but means the exchange controls the keys. Be cautious with unsolicited airdrops, approval requests and links sent by direct message.
