## What Is CoW Protocol (COW)?
COW is the governance and utility token for the CoW Protocol ecosystem, whose main trading interface is CoW Swap. The protocol is a decentralized exchange aggregator that settles trades through batch auctions and can match opposing orders directly. This approach is designed to improve trade execution and reduce exposure to maximal extractable value (MEV), a form of value extraction that can affect transactions on public blockchains.
COW is not required simply to make a swap on CoW Swap. Its stated roles are to let holders participate in governing and curating the protocol’s infrastructure through CowDAO, and to provide fee discounts on CoW Swap and some other perks. The token’s practical value therefore depends partly on governance decisions and the terms of any benefits available to holders. COW does not represent equity in a company or a guaranteed share of protocol revenue.
## What Is COW Used For?
The main stated use of COW is participation in CowDAO, the community governance organization associated with CoW Protocol. Holders can take part in decisions about the protocol ecosystem and its infrastructure, and the token is described as giving holders a role in curating that infrastructure. The exact proposals, voting procedures, eligibility rules and weight assigned to tokens can depend on current governance arrangements, so check the active rules before treating a token balance as voting power.
COW also offers fee discounts when trading on CoW Swap, along with some other perks. These benefits do not mean every holder automatically receives the same discount in every situation; conditions can change, and not every product or transaction may qualify. COW is not needed to place an order, and holding it does not guarantee favorable execution, lower fees in every case, or a return. Its uses are tied to CoW Protocol and CowDAO rather than serving as a general-purpose payment token.
## COW Supply and Tokenomics
COW has a stated total and maximum supply of 1 billion tokens. About 574.5 million were circulating as of 2026-11-05, meaning the circulating amount was below the full supply at that time. Circulating supply can change, and the figures do not by themselves explain when or under what terms the remaining tokens may enter circulation. Check current project disclosures for details on allocations, vesting or other supply changes rather than assuming a particular release schedule.
On 2026-11-05, COW traded at about $0.116, with a market capitalization of about $66.4 million and fully diluted valuation of about $115.7 million. These are time-sensitive market estimates, not fixed features of the token. Market capitalization uses the circulating supply, while fully diluted valuation estimates value using the full supply. Neither figure predicts future performance. Trading volume and price can vary quickly, and a token’s market price may differ across venues.
## Chains and How COW Is Held or Traded
COW is issued on Ethereum, BNB Chain, Polygon, xDai, Base and Arbitrum, according to public information. It is not listed as the native token of any of these chains. A token displayed under the same ticker on different networks may be a network-specific representation, so selecting a network is an important part of sending or trading it. Do not assume that a COW balance on one chain can be sent directly to another chain without a supported bridge or other transfer method.
COW may be available through crypto exchanges and decentralized trading venues, but availability, liquidity and supported networks vary. Before trading, check the exact asset and network in the wallet or venue you use, and confirm that deposits and withdrawals support that network. If using a decentralized exchange, review the transaction details and any network, swap or bridge fees. A ticker alone is not enough to establish that a token is the official COW asset.
## History and Notable Context
CoW Protocol’s project materials describe COW as a governance and utility token for its ecosystem. The token’s all-time high in the supplied market history was about $2.22 on 2022-03-28; its all-time low was about $0.0399 on 2022-11-09. These historical figures provide context only. They do not indicate what the token should be worth now or how it may perform in the future.
Public sources do not specify a launch date for COW, and it does not identify a consensus or hashing mechanism for the token. That is consistent with COW being issued on existing blockchain networks rather than being described here as the native asset of its own chain. CoW Swap’s batch-auction and order-matching design belongs to the protocol’s trading system; it should not be confused with a token mechanism that guarantees particular execution results or token returns.
## Risks of Holding COW
COW carries the risks common to crypto assets, including sharp price changes, reduced liquidity, loss of value and the possibility of losing some or all of the amount held. Its utility and demand may depend on how CoW Protocol develops, how governance decisions are made, and whether fee discounts or other perks remain useful. Governance participation also does not guarantee that a holder’s preferences will be adopted. The token’s historical price range illustrates that its market value has varied substantially, but past prices are not a guide to future results.
There are also technical and operational risks. Sending COW to the wrong network or address can make it difficult or impossible to recover. Bridges, exchanges, smart contracts and wallets can be affected by software flaws, outages, security incidents or changing support. Market figures such as supply, valuation and trading volume change over time. Research the current token details and custody arrangements independently, and do not treat COW as a guaranteed source of income or a low-risk asset.
## How to Store COW Safely
COW can generally be held in a wallet that supports the relevant network and token, or in an account at an exchange that lists it. For self-custody, confirm the network and official token details before adding an asset or receiving a transfer; the same ticker can be used by unrelated tokens. Keep the wallet’s recovery phrase private and offline, and never share it with a website, support agent or person claiming to help. Consider a hardware wallet if it suits your security needs, and test an unfamiliar transfer with a small amount first.
For exchange custody, the platform controls the keys, and access can depend on its security, policies and continued operation. For self-custody, you control the keys but are responsible for backups and signing transactions safely. Review permissions before approving a transaction, especially when interacting with unfamiliar applications. Store only the amount you can manage securely, and make sure you understand which network a wallet or venue uses before depositing or withdrawing COW.
By the numbers
CoW Protocol in numbers
CoW Protocol (COW) is ranked #361 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $64.7M and a price of $0.1127 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation is $113M, so roughly 57% of the eventual supply is in circulation today; tokens still to be released could add selling pressure.
The price was up 2.0% over 7 days, down 24.3% over 30 days, down 43.4% over the past year. It trades about 95% below its all-time high of $2.22, set on Mar 28, 2022.
About 574.49M COW are in circulation out of a maximum supply of 1B (57% issued).
24-hour trading volume was about $2.71M, or 4.2% of its market cap: moderate turnover.
COW has token contracts on 6 chains we track, including Ethereum, BNB Chain, Polygon, xDai. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.
COW is linked to CoWSwap, which we cover in our Dex Aggregator rankings. See our CoWSwap page for how the protocol works and how we score it.

COW FAQs
What is the COW token used for?
COW is used for participation in CowDAO governance and curation of CoW Protocol infrastructure. Holders may also receive fee discounts on CoW Swap and some other perks, subject to current terms. It is not required simply to make a swap.
How many COW tokens are there?
The stated total and maximum supply is 1 billion COW. About 574.5 million were circulating as of 2026-11-05. Circulating supply and token-release details can change, so check current project information.
Which networks support COW?
COW is listed as issued on Ethereum, BNB Chain, Polygon, xDai, Base and Arbitrum. Confirm the network and token details before depositing or transferring, because the same ticker can refer to different assets.
