What Threshold Network is

Threshold Network is a protocol built around threshold cryptography. The idea is simple to state: a sensitive operation, such as holding a key or decrypting data, is split across many independent participants, and a minimum number of them (the threshold) must cooperate for it to work. No single party can act alone, so users do not need to trust one central operator.

The project came from a 2022 merger of two earlier networks, NuCypher and Keep. Each brought its own technology, and Threshold combined them under one token and one governance structure. The network is run by node operators who perform the cryptographic work, while a DAO of token holders governs the protocol.

The best-known product is tBTC, which aims to let people use Bitcoin on other blockchains without handing it to a centralized custodian. Threshold also describes tools for developers, including an SDK for minting and redeeming BTC inside applications. The project is listed under DeFi tokens on this site, and some data providers also tag it as a Bitcoin-related DeFi (BTCfi) and cross-chain protocol.

What the T token is used for

The T token is an ERC-20 asset that plays two publicly described roles. First, it is a utility token for the network: it coordinates participants and gives node operators a reason to behave honestly. Second, it is the governance token for the Threshold DAO, so holders can take part in decisions about how the protocol evolves.

Staking is the main way those roles come together. According to the project's staking help material, people who stake T take part in securing the network and in governance. Node operators generally need stake behind them so there is something at risk if they misbehave, which is the incentive logic common to proof-of-stake style services.

Project descriptions also call T a value-accrual asset, meaning the token is meant to be tied to the protocol's activity. The details of how that works can change through DAO votes, so check current governance documentation instead of relying on a summary. T is not used to pay gas on any chain; it is not the native coin of any blockchain.

Supply and tokenomics

At the time of writing, the data shows a circulating supply of about 11.155 billion T, equal to the reported total supply. No maximum supply is listed, which means the data does not confirm a hard cap. That is worth checking in the DAO's governance records, because a token without a stated cap could in principle be changed by a governance vote.

As of 2026-11-05, T trades around $0.0048, giving a market capitalization of about $53.3 million and a fully diluted valuation of the same size, since circulating and total supply match. That puts it near rank 417 by market cap. Daily trading volume was about $4.1 million.

The all-time high was roughly $0.227 on 2022-03-02, and the all-time low was about $0.0032 on 2026-06-25. The price was down about 59% over the past year and roughly flat over the past week. This is a description of past moves, not a forecast.

the public information available here do not include a detailed allocation breakdown, vesting schedule or emission rules, so those are not covered. Readers who want them should consult the project's own documentation and DAO proposals.

Chains, holding and trading

T is issued on four networks: Ethereum, Solana, Base and Optimism. The ERC-20 version on Ethereum is the original form of the token, and the other versions exist so holders can use it on those ecosystems. Because the same token appears on several chains, the contract address matters. Always confirm you are dealing with the genuine contract for the chain you are using.

In general terms, T can be held in any wallet that supports the relevant chain: an Ethereum-compatible wallet for Ethereum, Base and Optimism, and a Solana wallet for the Solana version. Moving T between chains typically relies on a bridge, which adds its own technical risk and fees.

T is traded on centralized exchanges and on decentralized exchanges. Liquidity varies by venue and by chain. Smaller-cap tokens can have wider spreads, so a large order may move the price more than expected. Staking T for network participation is done through the Threshold staking interface and its help documentation, not through ordinary exchange trading.

History and notable events

Threshold's history starts with two separate projects. NuCypher focused on proxy re-encryption and privacy tooling, while Keep Network worked on keeping private data off-chain, and it also produced an earlier Bitcoin-bridging design. In 2022 the two communities merged to form Threshold, and the T token was introduced as the unified replacement for the earlier tokens.

The price peaked around March 2022, which was early in the project's life as a combined network. Since then the market has been difficult for many mid-cap DeFi tokens, and T reached its all-time low in June 2026, according to the data.

On the product side, tBTC has been the main focus, with a developer SDK aimed at letting applications mint, redeem and read BTC balances without running their own backend. Other news from the project concerns how institutions can assess who truly controls Bitcoin, covering custody, key control, verification and recovery. Public sources given here do not list audits, hacks or partnerships, so none are claimed.

Risks to understand

Price risk comes first. T has fallen sharply from its 2022 high and has been volatile, and a market cap in the tens of millions means it can move quickly on modest trading volume. Nothing here is a recommendation to buy or sell.

Technical risk is real for any protocol that holds or coordinates value across chains. Smart contract bugs, bridge failures, and weaknesses in the threshold signing process could affect tBTC users or token holders. Threshold cryptography reduces reliance on a single party, but it does not remove the need to trust the code and the node operators collectively.

Governance risk matters too. Because T holders vote on the protocol's direction, outcomes depend on participation and on how concentrated voting power is. With no stated maximum supply in the data, supply rules also depend on governance.

Other risks include thin liquidity on some chains and venues, fake tokens that copy the name T on other networks, and regulatory change affecting DeFi and tokenized Bitcoin. Staking may also involve lockups or penalties, so read the terms before committing funds.

How to store T safely

Because T is a standard token, it is stored by controlling the private keys of the wallet that holds it. For anything beyond a small amount, a hardware wallet paired with an Ethereum-compatible or Solana-compatible interface is the usual choice. Keep the recovery phrase offline, written down, and never type it into a website or share it with anyone claiming to offer support.

Check the token contract address before you add or receive T on any chain, since lookalike tokens are common. Send a small test transaction first when moving funds to a new address or across a bridge.

If you stake T, understand who holds the keys that authorize staking actions, and what happens if you lose access. Review any token approvals you grant to decentralized applications and revoke the ones you no longer need. Keeping funds on an exchange is convenient for trading, but you then depend on the exchange rather than controlling the keys yourself.

By the numbers

Threshold Network in numbers

Threshold Network (T) is ranked #424 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $52.2M and a price of $0.004679 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($52.2M) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.

The price was up 4.7% over 7 days, down 9.6% over 30 days, down 61.4% over the past year. It trades about 98% below its all-time high of $0.2269, set on Mar 2, 2022.

About 11.16B T are in circulation. No hard maximum supply is listed, so new tokens can still be issued.

24-hour trading volume was about $6.64M, or 13% of its market cap: high turnover.

T has token contracts on 4 chains we track, including Ethereum, Solana, Base, Optimism. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.
