What Ontology (ONT) is
Ontology is a public blockchain that describes itself as a high-performance platform for distributed trust. Its stated aim is to give businesses and developers a base layer for smart contracts, digital identity and data exchange, without forcing them to rebuild their existing systems. The project text also talks about customizable chains for different applications and collaboration between chain networks, though how much of that is in daily use is a separate question from what was proposed.
The project was created by a Chinese company called OnChain, led by Erik Zhang and Da Hongfei, who were also behind the NEO blockchain. The ONT token is the native token of the Ontology chain, and the network went live in early 2018. The token launched on 2018-02-26 according to the data we hold.
Coin databases tag it as a smart contract platform, a proof-of-stake network and a masternode-style project. The full consensus design is more detailed than a single label, so treat those tags as shorthand. One feature that comes up often is ONT ID, a decentralized identity system that lets people create and manage digital identities and prove who they are without handing everything to a central provider.
What ONT is used for
The clearest role for ONT is taking part in the network's consensus. Public descriptions say ONT is used for staking in consensus, while a second token, ONG, serves as the utility token for paying for on-chain services. ONT periodically releases ONG, so holding ONT is tied to an ongoing flow of the second token.
Beyond that, ONT acts as the main unit of value on the chain, and it trades on exchanges like many other assets. Ontology's wider pitch centers on identity and data, including ONT ID and data-exchange protocols, which are meant to run on the chain and use ONG for fees. We do not have verified details on current usage levels, so any claim about adoption should be checked against the project's own documentation.
Some articles promote ONT as a long-term investment, and others mention mining it. Neither framing is a good guide. The data lists it as proof of stake, so it is not mined with hardware in the Bitcoin sense, and nothing on this page is investment advice.
Supply and tokenomics
According to the data, ONT has a circulating supply of 1,000,000,000 tokens and a total supply of 1,000,000,000. No maximum supply figure is recorded. Because circulating and total supply match, the fully diluted valuation equals the market cap, at about $44.8M as of 2026-11-05.
That does not mean nothing else can ever be issued. The missing maximum field means we cannot confirm a hard cap from the data, so check the project's documentation for any rules on future issuance. We also do not have a verified breakdown of the initial allocation among founders, the community, partners and reserves, so we will not guess at one.
The second token, ONG, has its own supply and release schedule, which is separate from ONT. Public descriptions say ONT releases ONG over time, and ONG covers service fees on the network. If you want to understand the full economics, you need to read about both tokens together, since the fee token and the staking token play different roles.
Market figures as of 2026-11-05: a price near $0.045, a market cap rank around 478, and 24-hour trading volume of about $2.1M. These move constantly.
Chains and how ONT is held and traded
ONT is the native token of the Ontology chain, and the data lists no other chains where it is issued. In practice, that means the main version of the token lives on Ontology itself. Wrapped or bridged versions may exist on other networks or on exchanges, but we cannot verify them here, so confirm the contract and network details before moving anything.
Most people get ONT through centralized exchanges, where it can be bought, sold and stored in an account. Withdrawing it to a personal wallet that supports the Ontology network gives you control of the keys. Staking and fee-related activity happen on the chain itself, so you would need a compatible wallet for those.
When you transfer ONT, check three things: that the receiving address is for the Ontology network, that the exchange supports withdrawals on that network, and that you have tested with a small amount first. Sending a token over the wrong network is a common and often irreversible mistake.
Liquidity is modest compared with the largest tokens, with daily volume of about $2.1M at the time of writing. Thin markets can mean wider spreads and larger price swings on bigger orders.
History and market snapshot
Ontology was launched in 2018, in the same period as many other smart contract platforms. Its pedigree, with founders who had already built NEO, helped draw attention early on. The all-time high recorded in the data is about $10.92 on 2018-05-02, a few months after launch.
Since then the price has fallen by a very large margin. As of 2026-11-05 it sits near $0.045, and the data shows an all-time low of about $0.0348 on 2026-08-14, which is recent. Over the last year the price is down about 42%, and over the past seven days it is down about 6.7%. The market cap is about $44.8M, putting it around rank 478.
Those numbers describe a project that has lost most of its market value compared with the 2018 peak. They do not by themselves say anything about the quality of the technology, and we do not have a verified list of notable events, partnerships or upgrades that we could cite with confidence. For the project's own record, read its official announcements and technical documentation, and be cautious about marketing-style articles, some of which are written to attract leads or promote trading.
Risks to understand
Market risk. ONT is a small-cap token with a long record of decline. Prices can move sharply, and low volume makes exits harder in a fast market. Past peaks give no indication of what comes next.
Adoption risk. Ontology competes with many other smart contract and identity projects. A platform needs developers and users to keep its value, and a fall in activity can feed on itself.
Supply and governance risk. No maximum supply is recorded in our data, and we cannot verify how token issuance or consensus rules might change over time. Centralization concerns also come up with some proof-of-stake and masternode-style networks, where a small group may hold much of the influence.
Counterparty and exchange risk. If you hold ONT on an exchange, you rely on that company. Delistings, withdrawal suspensions and hacks have all affected other tokens in the past.
Scam and misinformation risk. Be wary of articles that call ONT the future of investing, of unsolicited messages offering staking returns, and of fake wallet apps. This page is educational and not buy or sell advice, and you should never put in money you cannot afford to lose.
How to store ONT safely
For long-term holding, a wallet you control is generally safer than leaving tokens on an exchange. Choose a wallet that explicitly supports the Ontology network and ONT, and download it only from the project's official channels. Fake wallet apps and lookalike sites are a common route for theft.
Write down your recovery phrase on paper, store it offline, and never type it into a website, share it in a chat or photograph it. Anyone who has the phrase controls the funds. Consider keeping a second copy in a separate secure place.
A hardware wallet adds protection if it supports the asset, so check current compatibility before relying on one. Because ONT and ONG are two different tokens, make sure you understand which one your wallet shows and how it handles ONG that is released over time.
Before any transfer, double-check the address character by character, confirm the network, and send a small test amount first. If you stake, read how locking, unlocking and any waiting periods work, so you are not caught out when you want to move funds. Keep your devices updated and avoid signing prompts you do not understand.
By the numbers
Ontology in numbers
Ontology (ONT) is ranked #483 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $43.5M and a price of $0.0435 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($43.5M) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.
The price was down 5.1% over 7 days, down 24.8% over 30 days, down 46.6% over the past year. It trades about 100% below its all-time high of $10.92, set on May 2, 2018.
About 1B ONT are in circulation. No hard maximum supply is listed, so new tokens can still be issued.
24-hour trading volume was about $2.49M, or 5.7% of its market cap: moderate turnover.
ONT is the native token of Ontology. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.

ONT FAQs
What is ONT used for?
ONT is the native token of the Ontology blockchain. Public descriptions say it is used for staking in consensus, and it periodically releases ONG, the utility token that pays for on-chain services.
What is the difference between ONT and ONG?
ONT is the staking and value token, while ONG is the utility token used for on-chain services. ONT releases ONG over time, so the two are linked but have different roles.
What is the supply of ONT?
The data shows a circulating and total supply of 1,000,000,000 ONT. No maximum supply is recorded, so check the project documentation for rules on any future issuance.
Who created Ontology?
Ontology was created by OnChain, a Chinese company led by Erik Zhang and Da Hongfei, who were also the founders behind NEO. The ONT token launched on 2018-02-26.
Can you mine ONT?
ONT is listed as a proof-of-stake asset, so it is not mined with hardware the way Bitcoin is. Participation in the network is through staking in consensus, subject to the network's own rules and requirements.
Why is the ONT price so far below its all-time high?
As of 2026-11-05 the price is about $0.045, down from an all-time high of about $10.92 in 2018, and it hit an all-time low of about $0.0348 on 2026-08-14. We do not predict prices, and nothing here is buy or sell advice.
What is the market cap of Ontology?
As of Nov 6, 2026, Ontology had a market cap of about $43.5M, ranking #483 among cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. Market cap is price multiplied by circulating supply, so it moves with the price.
