What Nexus Mutual and NXM are

Nexus Mutual is a decentralized insurance protocol built on Ethereum. It is run as a mutual: members pool capital, and that pool is used to pay valid claims. NXM is the token that represents membership and participation in that system.

The protocol is best known for smart contract cover, which protects against financial loss from bugs, hacks or exploits in contract code. The project describes this cover as applying to unintended uses of a smart contract. Events such as lost private keys or a centralized exchange being hacked fall outside that kind of cover. In December 2020 the project added custody cover aimed at centralized custodians and lenders, with Celsius, BlockFi and Nexo named as examples. The project's current materials also list other risks such as slashing and stablecoin depegs.

NXM is not a payment coin and it is not the native token of any chain. It is an Ethereum-issued token that is tied closely to how the mutual operates, which makes it different from a typical governance token that mostly exists to vote.

What NXM is used for

According to the project's documentation and common third-party summaries, NXM has several roles that all revolve around the mutual.

  • Buying cover: members use NXM to purchase protection for a protocol or position they want to insure.
  • Governance: holders vote on-chain on matters such as protocol upgrades and how the capital pool is invested.
  • Risk and claims assessment: members take part in assessing risks and deciding whether claims should be paid.
  • Capital provision: staking NXM against specific protocols is a way to back cover and earn a share of the fees it generates, which encourages capital to sit behind the system.

The common thread is that holding NXM means taking part in the insurance business, including its risks. If cover is bought and a claim is valid, the pool pays out. If the pool pays out heavily, the people who backed it can lose some of their stake. That is a very different relationship to a token than simply holding it for price exposure.

Supply and token model

Nexus Mutual uses a token model where members can mint and redeem NXM directly with the protocol, instead of relying only on an order book. The documentation describes this mechanism as a way to help ensure claims can be paid even after a major loss. In practice, the protocol's own price for NXM is linked to the size of its capital pool, and market prices can differ from that.

Because tokens are minted and redeemed, supply is not fixed. The data shows no maximum supply. As of 2026-11-05, circulating and total supply were both about 1.55 million NXM, so the fully diluted value equals the market cap, at about $94.7 million. The price was about $61.09, and the token ranked around 286 by market cap.

For context, the all-time high was about $185.97 on 2021-11-10 and the all-time low about $6.96 on 2020-07-22. At the time of writing, the price was up roughly 3.9% over seven days and down roughly 18% over one year. These figures change constantly and are not a forecast.

Chains, membership and how it is traded

NXM is issued on Ethereum, and the protocol operates there. It is not the native token of any separate blockchain.

Holding NXM directly in the protocol is tied to membership. Joining the mutual involves an identity check, and NXM is designed to move between members rather than circulate freely like most tokens. Because of that, many people who want market exposure use a wrapped version, commonly called wNXM, which is a standard Ethereum token that can be traded on decentralized exchanges and some centralized platforms. Wrapped and unwrapped tokens are different products with different rules, so check which one you are looking at before acting.

The project's own app is where members buy cover, stake, and vote. Anyone trading through exchanges should read the token contract address carefully, since similarly named tokens exist. Liquidity for NXM-related assets is thinner than for large DeFi tokens, so prices can move more on modest orders, and the 24-hour volume figure was not available in our data.

History and notable events

Several points in the public record help explain how Nexus Mutual developed.

  • It began as a smart contract cover provider on Ethereum, covering the main DeFi protocols of the time.
  • In December 2020 it released custody cover, extending protection to centralized custodians and lenders.
  • In February 2021, press coverage reported that the project raised about $2.7 million in an NXM token sale.
  • The token reached its all-time high on 2021-11-10, during the broader crypto market peak of that year.

Our data does not include a launch date for the token, so none is given here. Since 2021 the product list has widened beyond contract failure, and governance has continued to shape how the capital pool is managed. Anyone researching the project in depth should read the current documentation and governance records rather than rely on older summaries, because cover terms and rules have changed over time.

Risks to understand

NXM carries risks that go beyond ordinary price swings.

  • Claims risk: members who stake NXM to back cover can lose part of their stake if claims are paid out. Backing cover is not the same as earning a risk-free yield.
  • Smart contract risk: the protocol is itself code on Ethereum. A flaw in Nexus Mutual's contracts could harm users, even though it insures other protocols.
  • Cover limits: cover has defined terms. Losses outside those terms, such as lost keys or exchange failures that the policy does not name, may not be paid. Read the wording before relying on it.
  • Claims decisions: whether a claim is approved depends on the protocol's assessment and governance process, not on a guarantee.
  • Liquidity and access: membership checks, a wrapped version with its own market, and relatively thin trading can make entering or leaving a position harder.
  • Market risk: the price was about 18% lower over the past year at the time of writing, and far below its 2021 high.

How to store NXM safely

NXM and wNXM are Ethereum tokens, so any wallet that supports Ethereum can hold the wrapped version. A hardware wallet is the common choice for larger amounts, because it keeps the private keys offline. Write down the recovery phrase on paper, store it away from the device, and never type it into a website or share it with anyone claiming to offer support.

If you join the mutual and hold NXM directly, you will connect a wallet to the official app. Bookmark the correct address yourself and avoid links from search ads, social media replies or direct messages, since fake DeFi sites are common. Check each transaction before you sign it, especially token approvals, and revoke approvals you no longer need.

Consider using one wallet for long-term holdings and a separate one for everyday dApp use. If you stake NXM against a protocol, remember that the staked amount is exposed to claims as well as held in your wallet, so track it as an active position rather than idle storage.

By the numbers

Nexus Mutual in numbers

Nexus Mutual (NXM) is ranked #291 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $89.3M and a price of $57.70 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($89.3M) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.

The price was up 0.4% over 7 days, down 12.3% over 30 days, down 28.7% over the past year. It trades about 69% below its all-time high of $185.97, set on Nov 10, 2021.

About 1.55M NXM are in circulation. No hard maximum supply is listed, so new tokens can still be issued.

NXM has token contracts on Ethereum. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.

NXM FAQs

What is NXM used for?

NXM is the membership and utility token of Nexus Mutual, a decentralized cover protocol on Ethereum. It is used to buy cover, vote on governance, take part in risk and claims assessment, and stake to back cover.

What is the supply of NXM?

There is no maximum supply in our data. NXM is minted and redeemed through the protocol, so supply can change. As of 2026-11-05, circulating and total supply were both about 1.55 million tokens.

Can I buy NXM on any exchange?

Not directly in the usual way. NXM is aimed at members and the protocol involves an identity check. Many people trade wNXM, a wrapped version that works as a standard Ethereum token. They are separate assets, so confirm which one you hold.

Does Nexus Mutual cover every crypto loss?

No. Cover only applies to the events and terms it names, and claims go through the protocol's assessment process. Smart contract cover addresses unintended use of contracts, not lost private keys or exchange hacks, unless a specific cover type says otherwise.

Can NXM holders lose money from claims?

Yes, in the sense that staking NXM against a protocol can lead to loss of some of the staked tokens if claims are paid. Other risks include smart contract bugs, thin liquidity and ordinary price swings.

How has the NXM price moved?

At the time of writing, on 2026-11-05, NXM traded at about $61.09 with a market cap of about $94.7 million. That is well below the all-time high of about $185.97 set on 2021-11-10. These figures move daily and are not predictions.
