What Reserve Rights is

Reserve Rights (RSR) is an ERC-20 token tied to the Reserve protocol. Its two main jobs are to back Reserve's stablecoins, called RTokens, through staking, and to govern them through proposals and votes on how each RToken is configured.

It helps to separate RSR from the RTokens themselves. RTokens are the assets that users hold or spend. RSR is the separate token that sits behind them as a safety layer and as a voting tool. Holders can stake RSR on one RToken, split it across several, or leave it unstaked.

The project was co-founded by Nevin Freeman and Matt Elder. On our site, the issuing project is listed as Reserve Protocol, an on-chain platform for creating and trading tokenized index baskets (DTFs) that RSR holders help govern. Our own categories place RSR under DeFi tokens and real-world asset (RWA) tokens. At the time of writing, it ranks around 284 by market capitalization.

RSR is not the native coin of any blockchain. It is a token issued on existing networks, so it does not pay network fees and does not secure a chain of its own.

What RSR is used for

RSR has two documented uses.

Overcollateralization through staking. RSR works as first-loss capital. If the collateral behind an RToken fails, for example because a collateral token defaults, staked RSR is the layer meant to make RToken holders whole. In return for taking that risk, stakers can expect a share of the revenue the RToken generates. As a general rule, yields tend to rise as the RToken's market capitalization grows, though no rate is guaranteed.

Governance. RSR holders propose and vote on changes to an RToken's configuration. The exact parameters and voting rules are set in the protocol documentation, which is the right place to check current details.

The project describes this staking as different from many other staking schemes. In its model, later participants do not pay earlier ones, and stakers do not have to trust other parties to be rewarded.

The flip side is that backstop staking is a real risk position. If a default occurs and the backstop is used, staked RSR can be reduced. Anyone considering it should read how the mechanism works before committing funds.

Supply and tokenomics

RSR has a fixed maximum supply of 100 billion tokens, and the total supply equals that maximum. About 62.6 billion were circulating as of 2026-11-05, which is roughly 62.6% of the total.

The gap between circulating and total supply matters when you compare valuation figures. As of 2026-11-05, market capitalization was about $94.9 million, based on circulating supply. Fully diluted valuation was about $151.7 million, which assumes all 100 billion tokens exist at today's price. The price was around $0.0015, and 24-hour trading volume was about $8.1 million.

The data we hold does not describe the allocation of the remaining supply, any unlock schedule, or burn and issuance mechanics, so we do not guess at them. Readers who care about future dilution should look for the project's own tokenomics documentation.

On price history, RSR peaked at about $0.117 on 2021-04-16 and reached an all-time low of about $0.00105 on 2026-07-01. At the time of writing it was down roughly 65% over one year and about 5% over seven days. These are descriptive figures, not a forecast.

Chains and how RSR is held and traded

RSR is issued on Ethereum, Base and Arbitrum. The original token is an ERC-20 on Ethereum, and the other two networks are layer-2 chains that sit on top of it. Because RSR exists on several networks, check which network a given balance or deposit address uses before sending anything.

Holding RSR is straightforward. Any wallet that supports ERC-20 tokens on these networks can hold it, whether a browser or mobile self-custody wallet, a hardware wallet, or an account on an exchange that lists it. Staking and governance actions happen through the Reserve protocol's own interfaces and smart contracts, using a self-custody wallet connected to the app.

Trading happens in two general ways. Centralized exchanges list RSR against stablecoins and major cryptocurrencies. Decentralized exchanges let you swap it from your own wallet, with liquidity depending on the network and the pool. Liquidity can differ a lot between venues, so large orders may move the price more than expected.

Fees depend on the network. Ethereum transactions are typically more expensive than those on Base or Arbitrum, though costs vary with congestion.

History and notable events

RSR launched in May 2019 after an initial exchange offering on the Huobi Prime platform. It was one of the earlier projects aiming at stablecoin design where a separate token provides the backing layer, rather than relying solely on reserves of fiat assets.

Its price peaked in April 2021 during that cycle's broad crypto rally, at about $0.117. Since then the token has traded far below that high, reaching a new all-time low in July 2026.

Over time the project's focus has expanded. Our site lists Reserve Protocol as a platform for tokenized index baskets called DTFs, governed by RSR holders. That sits alongside the original RToken stablecoin framework, so RSR now spans both stablecoin backing and basket-style products.

The data we have does not list specific incidents, audits or partnerships, so we do not claim any here. Anyone researching the project should check the official documentation, governance forums and independent security reviews for the current state of the contracts and any past events.

Risks to understand

Market risk. RSR has fallen sharply from its 2021 high and is volatile. Falling prices can also shrink the value of any staked position.

Backstop risk. Staking RSR means accepting first-loss exposure. If an RToken's collateral defaults, staked RSR can be used to cover the shortfall, which may mean a loss for stakers.

Smart contract risk. Staking, governance and RToken logic all run on smart contracts. Bugs, exploits or flawed integrations with collateral assets can cause losses even if the design is sound on paper.

Collateral and stablecoin risk. The safety layer is only as relevant as the collateral behind each RToken. Depegs or defaults in underlying assets are the central scenario RSR is designed around.

Governance risk. Votes can change an RToken's configuration, and outcomes may not suit every holder.

Dilution and liquidity risk. Not all of the 100 billion supply is circulating yet. Trading depth also varies between venues and networks.

How to store RSR safely

For long-term holding, a hardware wallet or a well-secured self-custody wallet generally gives you more control than leaving tokens on an exchange. Write down your recovery phrase offline, store it somewhere safe, and never type it into a website or share it with anyone, including anyone claiming to be support staff.

Before every transfer, confirm the network. RSR exists on Ethereum, Base and Arbitrum, and sending tokens to an address on the wrong network can make recovery difficult or impossible. A small test transfer is a sensible habit for larger amounts.

Be careful with token approvals. When you connect to a staking or swap app, you may grant a contract permission to move your tokens. Review these permissions and revoke ones you no longer use.

Watch for impersonation. Fake airdrops, copycat websites and fraudulent token contracts are common. Confirm the token's contract address from the project's official documentation rather than a search ad or a message from a stranger.

If you stake, keep a small amount of the network's native coin in the same wallet to pay fees for unstaking or governance actions.

By the numbers

Reserve Rights in numbers

RSR FAQs

What is Reserve Rights (RSR) used for?

RSR is an ERC-20 token for the Reserve protocol. It is staked as first-loss backing for Reserve's RTokens and is used to vote on changes to their configuration. It is also the governance token for Reserve Protocol's tokenized index baskets, called DTFs.

What is the supply of RSR?

The maximum and total supply is 100 billion RSR. About 62.6 billion were circulating as of 2026-11-05, so a significant portion of the total supply was not yet in circulation.

Which blockchains does RSR run on?

RSR is issued on Ethereum, Base and Arbitrum. It is not the native token of any blockchain. Always confirm the network before depositing or withdrawing, since sending to the wrong one can lead to lost funds.

What does staking RSR involve?

Stakers provide first-loss capital for an RToken and can expect a share of that RToken's revenue. Their staked RSR can be used to cover a shortfall if the RToken's collateral defaults, so the position can lose value. No yield is guaranteed.
