What Axie Infinity (AXS) is
Axie Infinity (AXS) is the governance token of Axie Infinity, a blockchain game in which players collect, breed and battle creatures called Axies. Each Axie is an NFT, so players own the creature in their own wallet rather than inside an account held by a game company. The game was built by the studio Sky Mavis and became widely known in 2021 as a leading example of play-to-earn gaming, where time spent playing could produce income, particularly in some developing countries.
AXS sits alongside a second in-game token, Smooth Love Potion (SLP), which is a separate asset and not covered on this page. AXS is the token tied to ownership and decision-making rather than day-to-day gameplay rewards.
As of 2026-11-05, AXS ranks around 203rd by market capitalisation, at roughly $152 million. That is a small fraction of its 2021 peak. Our site files it under gaming, NFT, metaverse and play-to-earn tokens.
What the token is used for
According to the project description, AXS is a governance token. Holders are meant to have a say in the direction of the game universe by voting on proposals, in contrast to traditional games where the developer makes every decision. The same description says holders can stake AXS to earn more AXS and can vote on governance proposals.
In practice, the details of what holders can vote on, how staking rewards are paid and how much influence the community has compared with the studio have changed over time. Readers should check the project's current official documentation instead of relying on the original description alone.
AXS has also been used as a trading asset on exchanges, which is how most holders encounter it. Being a governance token does not give any claim on game revenue or profit by default, and it does not guarantee that the game itself will keep its player base.
Supply and tokenomics
AXS has a fixed maximum supply of 270 million tokens, and the total supply listed in the data matches that figure. At the time of writing, about 175.6 million AXS are counted as circulating, which is roughly two thirds of the maximum. The rest is expected to enter circulation under the project's release schedule, and this page does not set out the allocation or vesting details.
As of 2026-11-05, the price is about $0.87. At that price the market cap, based on circulating supply, is about $152 million. The fully diluted valuation, which assumes all 270 million tokens exist at the current price, is about $234 million. The gap between the two figures shows how much supply is still to be released.
Daily trading volume was about $31 million at the time of writing. Over the previous seven days the price was down about 5.5%, and over the previous year it was down about 26.5%. These figures change constantly and are shown only for context.
Chains, holding and trading
AXS was first issued on Ethereum as a standard token. Versions of it also exist on Ronin, Harmony and BNB Chain. Ronin is the chain built for the Axie Infinity ecosystem by Sky Mavis, and it is where most in-game activity takes place, because transaction costs on Ethereum were too high for frequent small game actions.
AXS is not the native gas token of any chain. It is a token issued on top of these networks, so moving it between chains requires a bridge, and using the wrong network when sending can lead to lost funds.
Most people hold AXS in a self-custody wallet that supports the relevant network, or leave it on an exchange that lists it. Trading happens on centralised exchanges and on decentralised exchanges. Anyone sending AXS should confirm which network the receiving address expects before sending, and should start with a small test transfer.
History and notable events
AXS became widely known during the 2021 play-to-earn boom. The data shows an all-time high of about $164.90 on 2021-11-06, and an all-time low of about $0.12 on 2020-11-06, before the game gained mass attention. At about $0.87 as of 2026-11-05, the token trades more than 99% below its peak.
A major event was the March 2022 attack on the Ronin bridge, which connects Ronin to Ethereum. Attackers took control of validator keys and drained a very large amount of assets, widely reported at roughly $600 million at the time. It was among the largest thefts in crypto history. The network was later restored and users were compensated through a recovery effort led by Sky Mavis, but the incident damaged confidence in the project.
The game's player numbers and token price also fell sharply after the 2021 peak, as the original reward model proved hard to sustain. AXS has also appeared in some data sets under an "alleged securities" label, linked to regulatory actions in the United States against exchanges that listed it.
Risks to understand
The main risk is that AXS depends on the health of a single game. If players leave, demand for Axies and for governance influence can fall, and the token may follow. The token has already lost most of its value from the 2021 peak, which shows how large these swings can be.
Other risks include:
- Bridge and chain security. The 2022 Ronin hack showed that cross-chain bridges can be a weak point.
- Supply releases. With about a third of the maximum supply not yet circulating, future releases could add selling pressure.
- Concentrated control. A studio-led project may hold more practical power than token voting suggests.
- Regulatory uncertainty. Some jurisdictions may treat tokens like AXS as securities.
- Liquidity. A smaller market cap means prices can move quickly on modest trades.
This page is general information, not financial advice, and it makes no forecast about the price. Only money you could afford to lose should be exposed to a token like this.
How to store AXS safely
For anything beyond small amounts, self-custody is usually safer than leaving tokens on an exchange. Use a well-known wallet that supports the network you hold AXS on, such as Ethereum or Ronin. A hardware wallet adds protection, since private keys stay on the device and are not exposed to a phone or computer that might be compromised.
Write down the recovery phrase on paper and keep it offline in a secure place. Never type it into a website, share it in a chat or store it as a photo or cloud note. No legitimate support team will ask for it.
Be careful with approvals. Game and marketplace sites often ask you to approve token spending, and phishing copies of Axie-related sites exist. Check addresses carefully, bookmark the official site and revoke approvals you no longer need. Because AXS exists on several networks, always confirm the network before sending, and do a small test transaction first.
By the numbers
Axie Infinity in numbers
Axie Infinity (AXS) is ranked #202 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $149M and a price of $0.8467 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation is $229M, so roughly 65% of the eventual supply is in circulation today; tokens still to be released could add selling pressure.
The price was down 1.6% over 7 days, down 30.5% over 30 days, down 28.1% over the past year. It trades about 99% below its all-time high of $164.90, set on Nov 6, 2021.
About 175.6M AXS are in circulation out of a maximum supply of 270M (65% issued).
24-hour trading volume was about $29.6M, or 20% of its market cap: high turnover.
AXS has token contracts on 4 chains we track, including Ethereum, Ronin, Harmony, BNB Chain. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.
AXS is linked to Axie Infinity, which we cover in our Play-to-Earn Games rankings. See our Axie Infinity page for how the protocol works and how we score it.
