What Decentraland and MANA are

Decentraland is a browser-based virtual world in which users explore, build and socialize as avatars. The world is divided into parcels called LAND, and each parcel is an NFT, so ownership is recorded on a blockchain and not held by a company database. Owners can build scenes on their parcels, such as galleries, games, shops or event spaces, and other users can visit them.

MANA is the project's ERC-20 token. It is the currency used inside the Decentraland ecosystem, and it is separate from LAND, which is a non-fungible asset. Data providers file MANA under several themes at once: metaverse, gaming, NFT and play-to-earn. It also appears in some entertainment and Animoca Brands-related groupings.

The project launched in 2017, which makes it one of the older metaverse-style crypto projects. It started as a simple grid of parcels and later grew into a 3D world with avatars, events, wearables and a community-run governance system. At the time of writing, MANA ranked around 209th by market capitalization, so it is a mid-to-small cap asset by crypto standards.

What MANA is used for

MANA works as the payment token inside Decentraland. Publicly described uses include buying LAND and other NFTs, such as avatar wearables, emotes and NAME registrations, on the in-world marketplace. Creators and businesses can also price items and experiences in MANA.

The token also ties into governance. Decentraland runs a DAO in which token holders can vote on proposals, for example how community funds are spent or which policies and features are adopted. Voting power is generally linked to holdings of MANA and related assets such as LAND, so holding the token carries a say in the project's direction as well as spending power.

In practice, much of MANA's trading volume happens on exchanges and has little to do with in-world purchases. Activity inside the virtual world has been modest compared with the hype around metaverse projects in 2021. Readers should therefore separate the stated purpose of the token from how it is actually used. The token's value depends on demand for Decentraland's marketplace and on market sentiment toward metaverse and gaming assets.

Supply and tokenomics

As of 2026-11-05, about 1.96 billion MANA were in circulation, and the total supply was about 2.19 billion. The data lists no fixed maximum supply, so readers should not assume a hard cap exists without checking the project's own documentation and the contract on a block explorer.

At the time of writing, the price was about $0.074. That put the market capitalization at roughly $145 million and the fully diluted valuation at roughly $162 million. The gap between the two figures reflects the part of the total supply that was not yet circulating. Reported 24-hour trading volume was about $10 million.

The price was down roughly 2.3% over seven days and roughly 62.7% over the past year. Its all-time high was $5.85 on 2021-11-25, and its all-time low was about $0.0092 on 2017-10-30. These figures describe past movements only. They say nothing about where the price will go next.

Detailed allocation and emission schedules are not part of the data used here, so this page does not describe them. The project's official documentation is the better source for how tokens were originally distributed.

Chains, holding and trading

MANA is issued on Ethereum and Polygon. It is not the native coin of any blockchain. The Ethereum version is the original ERC-20 token, while the Polygon version is a lower-fee option that is commonly used for in-world marketplace activity. Both can be held in an ordinary self-custody wallet that supports those networks, and a wallet needs a small balance of the network's gas token (ETH or POL) to send transactions.

MANA is widely available on large centralized exchanges, usually in pairs against stablecoins or major coins. It also trades on decentralized exchanges on Ethereum and Polygon. Its listing on the Coinbase 50 Index category in the data suggests broad exchange coverage, but availability varies by country and platform.

When moving MANA, check which network a platform expects. Sending the token on the wrong network, or to an address that does not support it, can lead to lost funds. Always send a small test amount first and confirm the contract address through an official source before interacting with it.

History and notable events

Decentraland's token launched in 2017. Early on, the project sold tokens to the public and used the proceeds to develop the virtual world, which opened in stages over the following years. The first version was a 2D grid of parcels and later became a 3D world that users could enter with avatars.

The project's best-known price moment came in late 2021, when interest in the metaverse surged and MANA reached its all-time high of $5.85 on 2021-11-25. The surge coincided with wider attention to NFTs and virtual land, including high-profile virtual land purchases and brand activations. Prices then fell sharply as the broader crypto market weakened and speculative interest in metaverse projects cooled.

Since then, the project has continued to host events, such as fashion and music activations, and has run a DAO to govern community funds. The token's price has stayed far below its peak. Some data providers also label MANA with an alleged SEC securities tag, which reflects third-party claims in US regulatory matters involving various tokens and not a ruling about MANA specifically. Readers should treat that tag as context, not a verdict.

Risks to understand

The main risk is price volatility. MANA fell by more than 60% over the year to 2026-11-05 and sits far below its 2021 high, so large swings in either direction are possible. Metaverse tokens in particular depend on sentiment, and the stated use case may not generate steady demand.

Adoption is a second risk. A virtual world needs regular visitors, creators and spending to support a token economy. If user activity is thin, MANA's usefulness as a currency is limited, and the price is driven mainly by speculation.

Other risks include:

  • Regulatory uncertainty: the alleged securities label shows that the legal treatment of tokens like MANA is contested in some places.
  • Smart contract and bridge risk: moving tokens between Ethereum and Polygon adds technical exposure.
  • NFT illiquidity: LAND and wearables can be hard to sell at a fair price when demand is low.
  • Scams: fake airdrops, phishing sites and impersonation of marketplace listings are common in NFT and metaverse communities.

This page is general information and not financial advice. It does not recommend buying or selling MANA.

How to store MANA safely

For long-term holding, a self-custody wallet gives you control of your keys, and a hardware wallet adds protection against malware on your computer or phone. Write down the recovery phrase on paper or metal, store it offline, and never type it into a website or share it with anyone, including people claiming to be support staff.

Because MANA exists on two networks, make sure your wallet is set up for both Ethereum and Polygon, and double-check which network you are on before each transfer. Keep a small amount of the network's gas token on hand to cover fees.

Leaving tokens on an exchange is convenient but means you rely on the platform's security and solvency. Many people keep only what they need for trading on an exchange and the rest in their own wallet.

Be careful with approvals. Connecting a wallet to marketplaces and unknown sites can grant permissions over your tokens and NFTs. Review and revoke old approvals periodically, and use a separate wallet with a small balance for exploring new sites and events. Treat unexpected NFTs or tokens sent to your wallet as possible scams and do not interact with them.
