What The Sandbox and SAND Are
The Sandbox is a virtual world platform where creators build voxel-style assets, games and experiences, and publish them on the blockchain. Voxels are 3D pixels, so the look is blocky, similar to some well-known building games. Creators can sell items and experiences, and players can visit, play and buy things inside those worlds.
SAND is the platform's utility token. It is an ERC-20 token, which means it follows the standard token format on Ethereum, and it also exists on Polygon and Base. SAND is not the native coin of any blockchain: it relies on those networks for security and settlement rather than running its own chain.
At the time of writing, SAND ranks around 227th by market capitalization, in the categories of gaming, metaverse, NFT and play-to-earn tokens. It is also tied to the Animoca Brands portfolio, which is a group of companies and projects focused on blockchain games and digital property.
What SAND Is Used For
SAND is described as the basis of transactions across The Sandbox ecosystem. Publicly described uses include:
- Purchases: buying LAND (virtual plots), assets such as avatars and items, and experiences created by others.
- Rewards: paying creators, game makers and LAND holders for what they contribute.
- Governance: voting on decisions through the platform's DAO structure, where token holders have a say in how the ecosystem develops.
- Staking: locking tokens to take part in parts of the ecosystem, such as governance or earning rewards.
Some recent commentary also suggests the team is exploring a broader utility layer in which SAND could serve for gas fees or rewards. Treat that as a stated direction rather than a confirmed feature, and check the project's own announcements for its current status.
In practice, the token's usefulness depends on people actually spending time and money inside The Sandbox. A token needs real activity on the platform to function as more than a trading instrument.
Supply and Tokenomics
The maximum supply of SAND is fixed at 3,000,000,000 tokens, and the total supply matches that figure. About 2.94 billion were in circulation as of 2026-11-05, which means roughly 98 percent of the cap is already out in the market. The fully diluted valuation is therefore close to the market cap: about $132.9M versus about $130.1M.
That has one practical meaning. Because nearly all tokens already exist, there is little scheduled new supply left to dilute holders. It does not mean the price is protected. Demand is what moves the price, and the token's allocation among the team, foundation, investors and ecosystem funds is a separate question worth reading about in the project's official documentation. The data here does not detail the vesting schedule, so it is not covered in depth.
As of 2026-11-05, SAND traded at about $0.044, with roughly $43.1M in 24-hour trading volume. It was down about 4 percent over seven days and about 74 percent over one year.
Chains and How SAND Is Held and Traded
SAND is issued on Ethereum, Polygon and Base. Ethereum is the original home of the token, while Polygon and Base offer lower fees for everyday transactions. The Sandbox platform itself is linked to both Ethereum and Polygon.
Because there are several versions across networks, it is important to check which network a SAND balance is on before sending it anywhere. Sending tokens to an exchange address on the wrong network can cause delays or permanent loss, depending on the exchange's policies.
SAND is listed on many centralized exchanges and on decentralized exchanges on these networks. Holders typically keep it in a self-custody wallet that supports Ethereum-compatible networks, then connect that wallet to the platform to buy LAND or items. Moving between networks usually requires a bridge, which adds its own steps and risks.
History and Notable Events
The Sandbox became one of the best-known metaverse projects during the 2021 boom in NFTs and virtual land. SAND reached an all-time high of about $8.40 on 2021-11-24. Its all-time low of about $0.029 was recorded on 2020-11-04, before that run-up.
At about $0.044 as of 2026-11-05, the token is far below its peak, and the one-year change of about negative 74 percent shows the pressure has continued. Interest in virtual land cooled significantly after 2021 across the whole metaverse category.
The token was also part of a Binance Launchpad offering, and it appears in some lists of tokens that regulators have been alleged to view as securities. That label comes from outside categorization, not a court ruling in this data, so it should be read as context only.
On the product side, the project's profile mentions a new AI-based game engine in beta for creators, which points to an effort to make building easier.
Risks to Understand
SAND carries the usual risks of a small-cap crypto token, plus a few specific to it.
- Price volatility: a drop of around 74 percent in a year shows how large the swings can be.
- Demand risk: the token depends on user activity inside The Sandbox. If players and creators leave, the need for SAND weakens.
- Sector risk: metaverse and play-to-earn projects have struggled to hold attention since the 2021 peak.
- Regulatory uncertainty: some classifications label SAND as an alleged security, and rules vary by country.
- Technical and bridging risk: smart contract bugs, phishing sites and bridge failures can result in lost funds.
- Virtual asset risk: LAND and items are not guaranteed to keep their value or to be resellable.
Nothing here is a recommendation to buy or sell. Anyone considering SAND should only use money they can afford to lose and research the project independently.
How to Store SAND Safely
For small amounts, a reputable exchange account with strong security settings is workable. For anything you plan to hold or use on the platform, a self-custody wallet gives you control of your own keys.
Good habits include:
- Use a hardware wallet for larger balances and keep the recovery phrase offline, written down and never photographed or stored in cloud notes.
- Send a small test transaction first, and confirm the network (Ethereum, Polygon or Base) matches on both sides.
- Bookmark the official site and be cautious about links in social media messages, as fake mint pages and wallet drainers are common in the NFT and metaverse space.
- Review and revoke token approvals you no longer need.
- Enable two-factor authentication on any exchange account using an authenticator app rather than SMS.
No one from the project or an exchange will ask for your recovery phrase. If someone does, it is a scam.
By the numbers
