Our verdict on Liminal Basis
7.0/10Liminal Basis suits DeFi users who already understand funding-rate yield and want exposure to Hyperliquid without managing every position. Its main strength is the choice between pooled, composable tokens and a self-custodial strategy builder, backed by linked audit reports and public rate stats. The main caveat is that yield depends on market funding conditions and on Hyperliquid, and no fee schedule or team details are published. Treat it as a variable-return, smart-contract-risk product and size positions accordingly.

What is Liminal Basis?
Liminal Basis, branded Liminal, presents itself as the native yield layer of Hyperliquid. It captures yield sources on Hyperliquid, mainly funding rates, and distributes them through automated delta-neutral strategies. DefiLlama files it under basis trading, with Hyperliquid as its listed chain and a listing date of July 2025.
The protocol has two product lines. Liminal Tokenized lets users mint yield-bearing tokens, namely xTokens and the flagship limUSD, that can be used across DeFi. Liminal Customized lets users design their own delta-neutral strategies and run them from their own Hyperliquid account.
DefiLlama shows roughly $21.4 million in TVL, up about 1.4% over seven days, and two audits listed. The homepage claims more than 19,000 DeFi users. The protocol has no token listed, and the team does not publish names on the homepage.
How Liminal Basis works
Liminal builds delta-neutral strategies on Hyperliquid. In simple terms, a delta-neutral position holds offsetting exposures so that its value does not follow the price of an asset. The yield then comes from sources such as perpetual futures funding rates, staking rewards and money markets rather than from price movements.
In the Tokenized product, you deposit stablecoins and receive xTokens or limUSD, which are yield-bearing tokens following the ERC-4626 standard. The strategies execute automatically and yield accrues in real time. Capital is pooled, and the tokens can be moved across chains and used in other DeFi protocols.
In the Customized product, you design a strategy yourself, choosing assets, allocations and leverage. It runs directly from your own Hyperliquid account through the native agent system, with direct positions, segregated capital and self-custody. The homepage says this is possible because of Hyperliquid's liquidity and native execution.

Key features
01
Tokenized xTokens
Mint yield-bearing xTokens that represent delta-neutral strategies and redeem them later. They follow the ERC-4626 vault standard and use funding rates, staking rewards and money markets as yield sources.
02
limUSD stable product
limUSD is the flagship product and follows the protocol's own strategy with no user customization. It is now available on HyperEVM and is multi-chain.
03
Customized strategies
Users design their own delta-neutral strategies, choosing assets, allocations and leverage across markets, running directly on Hyperliquid.
04
Self-custodial option
Customized strategies run from the user's own Hyperliquid account through the native agent system. Capital is self-custodied and segregated.
05
Composability across DeFi
xTokens can be used as collateral, supplied to AMMs, borrowed against or deployed into yield derivatives across EVM chains.
06
Cross-chain bridging
The docs cover minting, redeeming and bridging xTokens and limUSD between chains, so positions are not tied to one network.
07
Funding rate and asset stats
Public stat pages show protocol TVL, volume, live and historical funding rates, and performance data for each supported asset.
08
HIP-3 market expansion
The protocol says it is expanding through HIP-3 markets into equities, indices and commodities to find delta-neutral yield beyond crypto.
Pros and cons
What we like
- Two clear product paths: pooled yield tokens for convenience and a self-custodial option for control.
- Self-custody is available through the Customized product, which uses the user's own Hyperliquid account.
- ERC-4626 tokens are easy for other protocols to integrate and can be used as collateral or in AMMs.
- Audit reports are linked from the site, and two audits appear in the DefiLlama listing.
- Funding rate and per-asset stats are published, which helps users judge returns.
- Minting and redeeming are described as a few clicks, and the docs cover bridging.
Watch out for
- Yield depends on perpetual funding rates, which can fall or turn negative, so returns are not fixed.
- The protocol's strategy details behind limUSD are not spelled out on the homepage, which describes the yield source only as agnostic.
- Heavy reliance on Hyperliquid means exposure to that venue's smart-contract, liquidity and operational risk.
- Pooled products rely on smart contracts and automated execution, so contract or strategy failures could cause losses.
- No fee schedule is published on the homepage, so users cannot easily compare net returns with gross yield.
- The protocol has been listed only since mid-2025, so its track record through varied market conditions is short.
Liminal Basis fees
Liminal does not publish a fee schedule on its homepage. Yield accrues in real time, but how much the protocol keeps as revenue or performance fees is not stated. Users should check the docs and the stats pages for per-asset performance and fee details before depositing.
The referral program in the docs pays referrers 25% of the net revenue generated by referred users, which confirms that the protocol earns net revenue from its products. Network gas costs for minting, redeeming or bridging also apply and vary by chain.
Is Liminal Basis safe?
Liminal says its smart contracts are audited by independent security firms and links to the reports from its resources menu. Two audits appear in the DefiLlama listing. The names of the audit firms and any findings are not given in the material here, so read the reports directly. An audit does not guarantee that a contract is free of bugs.
The pooled products carry smart-contract risk, strategy execution risk and dependence on Hyperliquid. Delta-neutral strategies can still lose money if funding turns negative, if hedges fail or if positions are liquidated in volatile markets. The Customized product keeps funds in the user's own Hyperliquid account, which reduces custody exposure to the protocol but leaves the user responsible for the strategy settings and leverage.
Liminal does not publish a regulatory status on its homepage. Users should check that using the product is permitted where they live. Several public reporting for the name Liminal refer to unrelated companies, such as a digital asset custody firm and a security analytics firm, so confirm you are on the official site.

Who Liminal Basis is for
Liminal suits DeFi users who want stablecoin yield tied to Hyperliquid funding rates and who understand that returns vary. The tokenized products fit users and protocols that want a composable yield token. The Customized product fits more experienced traders who want to set assets, allocations and leverage themselves. It is not suited to anyone who needs guaranteed returns.
Liminal Basis FAQs
What is Liminal?
Liminal is a yield protocol built around Hyperliquid. It runs delta-neutral strategies that capture yield sources such as perpetual funding rates, and offers them as yield-bearing tokens or as customizable self-custodial strategies.
What does delta-neutral mean on Liminal?
A delta-neutral strategy holds offsetting positions so that its value is not meant to move with the price of the underlying asset. The return comes mainly from things like funding payments rather than from price direction. It can still lose money through execution problems, liquidation or negative funding.
What is the difference between limUSD and xTokens?
limUSD is described as the flagship product and uses the protocol's own strategy, with no user customization. xTokens are tokenized delta-neutral strategies with medium customizability, drawing on funding rates, staking rewards and money markets. Both are pooled, follow the ERC-4626 standard and work across multiple chains.
Do I keep custody of my funds?
Not with the pooled products, where capital is pooled into the protocol's strategies. The Customized product runs from your own Hyperliquid account through Hyperliquid's native agent system, and Liminal says you keep full custody of your assets.
Has Liminal been audited?
Liminal's homepage says its smart contracts are audited by independent security firms, and an audits section links to the reports. Two audits are listed on the DefiLlama profile. An audit reduces but does not remove contract risk.
Does Liminal have a token?
No. The DefiLlama profile lists no governance or protocol token for Liminal, so be cautious of anything claiming to be one.
Is there a referral program?
The Liminal docs describe a referral program in which a referrer earns 25% of the net revenue generated by people who join through their link, paid in USDC. Check the current docs for the exact terms before relying on it.
