Ethena Review 2026: How USDe and sUSDe Earn Yield, and the Risks

Ethena issues USDe, a synthetic dollar backed by hedged crypto positions, and sUSDe, its yield-bearing version. The yield is the draw, but it comes from derivatives markets and carries risks that a fiat-backed stablecoin does not.

DappsAtlas score

7.4/10

Good

Our verdict on Ethena

7.4/10

Ethena suits crypto users who want a dollar-denominated asset with a variable savings rate and are comfortable with derivatives-based backing. Its main strength is transparency and reach: real-time backing data, a SOC 2 Type II audit, 24/7 mint and redeem, and listings across major exchanges and DeFi. The main caveat is that USDe's stability and the sUSDe rate depend on derivatives markets and custodians, not bank deposits, so a stress event could hit both the peg and the yield. Size positions accordingly.

What is Ethena?

Ethena is a synthetic dollar protocol that issues USDe, which it describes as a fully backed, dollar-denominated digital asset. Its yield-bearing version, sUSDe, is the main way users earn. USDe launched in February 2024, and the homepage says more than $30bn has moved through its mint and redeem systems since.

One source reports USDe passed $10 billion in market cap within 500 days. USDe is listed across exchanges and onchain venues, and Ethena says it has partnered with Binance to bring it to that platform's user base. The homepage also names Coinbase, Robinhood, Kraken, Bybit, MEXC, Deribit and Upbit among venues.

The product range now goes beyond USDe. The site lists USDtb, a whitelabel offering and Ethena Pay, an app for saving, sending and spending. ENA is the governance token tied to the protocol.

The homepage stresses transparency, with real-time backing data, a SOC 2 Type II audit and proof-of-reserves attestations. It does not publish team details or a fee schedule on the page. The peg and yield rely on derivatives markets rather than bank reserves, and that is the core trade-off.

How Ethena works

Ethena issues USDe, a synthetic dollar. Instead of holding bank deposits, the protocol takes crypto collateral and pairs it with offsetting derivatives positions. Third-party sources describe this as long spot positions balanced by short futures, a delta-neutral approach that aims to keep the value near one dollar whatever the underlying crypto does.

Users can stake USDe to receive sUSDe, which accrues rewards. One source says Ethena's original yield came from the crypto basis trade, which earns from the gap between spot and futures prices and from funding rates. The same source says that as those returns have declined, Ethena has expanded into DeFi and institutional channels.

The backing assets are held with custodians. Ethena publishes real-time backing data, a backing ratio and proof-of-reserves attestations. Its homepage says minting and redeeming is available 24/7, which is how new USDe enters and leaves circulation.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Publishes real-time backing data, a backing ratio and a time-below-$0.997 metric
  • Cites a SOC 2 Type II audit with no exceptions noted and independent proof-of-reserves attestations
  • 24/7 mint and redeem availability
  • Wide distribution across major exchanges and DeFi venues, including a partnership with Binance
  • Offers a yield-bearing option in sUSDe, with average and live rate data on the homepage
  • Growing product set including USDtb, whitelabel stablecoins and Ethena Pay

Watch out for

  • USDe's peg and yield depend on derivatives markets, so sharp funding-rate drops or extreme volatility can hurt both
  • The sUSDe rate is variable and the homepage notes that the average is based on weekly reported data, so past rates are not a promise
  • Custody of backing assets with third parties adds counterparty risk that a plain on-chain stablecoin does not have
  • One source says returns from the original basis trade have declined, and the protocol has moved into other yield sources that carry their own risks
  • Promotional rewards such as those on Aave integrations can end, so headline yields may not last
  • The design is relatively young, and its behaviour through a prolonged stress period is not fully proven

Ethena fees

Ethena's homepage does not publish a fee schedule for minting, redeeming or staking. The cost to a user depends on the route taken: network gas fees if transacting on-chain, or the trading and withdrawal fees of an exchange if buying USDe there. Check the app or the venue's fee page before you transact.

The more important cost is indirect. The sUSDe rate is variable and reflects the protocol's yield sources, so the return you earn can change from week to week. The homepage average is based on weekly data reported by Ethena since January 2024, and it assumes no net stake or unstake activity during reward vesting periods.

Is Ethena safe?

Ethena says it has completed a SOC 2 Type II audit of its operational security controls, with zero exceptions noted, and that independent attestations verify the allocation and value of backing assets held with custodians. The homepage does not name the auditors or show the reports in full. Read the linked transparency pages for details. Smart-contract audits are not described in its homepage.

The main risks are structural. USDe's peg depends on hedging in derivatives markets. Third-party write-ups note that funding-rate crashes, wild volatility or thin liquidity could unbalance the system. Because backing assets sit with custodians and exchanges, counterparty risk also applies.

Ethena does not publish its regulatory status on the homepage. Rules for stablecoins and yield-bearing products differ by country, so check what applies to you. Only use funds you can afford to have temporarily lose their peg.

6 steps

How to get started with Ethena

  1. 1

Read the transparency pages to see the current backing ratio, the backing assets and the audit and attestation reports.

  2. 2

Decide whether you want to hold USDe directly, stake it as sUSDe, or use it on an exchange or DeFi platform that already supports it.

  3. 3

Check that Ethena's app and the venue you plan to use are available and legal where you live.

  4. 4

Connect a compatible wallet to the app, or open an account on a supported exchange.

  5. 5

Start with a small amount, and note the current sUSDe rate and any unstaking terms before you commit more.

  6. 6

Monitor the backing ratio and peg over time, and treat promotional rewards as temporary.

Who Ethena is for

Ethena fits crypto holders who want a dollar-pegged asset that can earn a variable rate, and DeFi users who want a yield-bearing collateral option. It also suits those who trade on exchanges that accept USDe as collateral. It is less suited to anyone who needs a stablecoin with plain cash-and-treasuries backing or a guaranteed return.

Ethena FAQs

What is USDe?

USDe is Ethena's dollar-denominated digital asset. It is described as fully backed, using crypto collateral that is hedged with offsetting derivatives positions rather than bank deposits. It launched in February 2024.

What is sUSDe and how does it earn yield?

sUSDe is the staked form of USDe. Holders earn rewards that accrue to the asset over time. The rate changes, and the homepage presents an average calculated from weekly data reported by Ethena since January 2024.

Is USDe safe?

Ethena states that minting and redeeming is available 24/7 and publishes a protocol backing ratio, a time-below-$0.997 metric and real-time backing asset data. It also cites a SOC 2 Type II audit and proof-of-reserves attestations. Like any stablecoin, it can still lose its peg under stress, and derivatives-market shocks are the main risk.

How is USDe different from USDC or USDT?

Ethena's design pairs long spot crypto with short futures so that price moves largely cancel out, which is why it is described as delta-neutral. It does not hold bank deposits as its main backing. Some other stablecoins are backed by cash and treasuries held at banks or custodians.

What is the ENA token?

ENA is the governance token. Holders can vote on protocol changes and may earn rewards. It is separate from USDe and sUSDe, and its price moves independently of the dollar peg.

Where can I use USDe?

The homepage lists Binance, Bybit, Coinbase, Robinhood, MEXC, Kraken, Deribit and Upbit among exchange venues, and mentions DeFi and institutional integrations. One example is a Liquid Leverage product on Aave. Availability can depend on your region and the venue's rules.

What fees does Ethena charge?

Ethena's homepage does not give a fee schedule. Costs depend on the route you use, such as network gas fees on-chain or exchange fees on a centralized venue. Check the app or the venue before transacting.
