Our verdict on HorizonDEX

5.0/10

HorizonDEX suits experienced DeFi users who want to try a concentrated liquidity exchange on Linea or Base and are comfortable managing price ranges. Its strength is the capital-efficient design and a listed audit record. The main caveat is size: liquidity is only about $60,000 and slipping, so swaps can be costly, fees and team details are not published, and the HZN token adds extra risk. Treat it as a small, speculative venue and keep positions small.

What is HorizonDEX?

HorizonDEX is a decentralized exchange that uses concentrated liquidity. Users can allocate liquidity within a custom price range, which the project says helps traders get better efficiency and lower slippage. Its homepage calls it a leading concentrated liquidity DEX on Linea, and it also runs on Base.

It has been tracked since July 2023 and has its own token, HZN. Two audits are listed for the project, though the auditors are not named in the material reviewed.

Scale is the main caveat. Total value locked is roughly $60,000, and it dropped about 6.8% over the last week. That is small for a DEX, and it limits how large a trade the pools can absorb without noticeable price impact.

How HorizonDEX works

A decentralized exchange lets people swap tokens directly from their wallets using smart contracts, rather than an order book run by a company. Prices come from liquidity pools funded by users, who are called liquidity providers.

In a concentrated liquidity design, a provider does not spread funds across every possible price. They choose a custom range, for example a band around the current price, and their capital is only used while the market trades inside it. This gives traders deeper liquidity at the active price and lower slippage, and lets providers earn more fees per dollar deposited.

The trade-off is active management. If the price moves outside a provider's range, the position stops earning fees and ends up fully in one of the two assets. Impermanent loss can also be larger than in a classic full-range pool.

5 features

Key features

01

Custom price ranges

Liquidity providers pick the price range their capital covers instead of spreading it across all prices. This can make capital work harder where trading actually happens.

02

Lower slippage design

Because liquidity can be concentrated near the current price, traders can get tighter pricing on pools that have enough depth.

03

Two layer-2 networks

The exchange is deployed on Linea and Base, two Ethereum layer-2 networks, so users can trade without paying mainnet gas costs.

04

HZN token

HorizonDEX has its own HZN token, which the project uses within its ecosystem. Details of its role are not in the material reviewed.

05

Listed audits

Two audits are listed for the project, which is a positive sign, although the providers are not named in the material reviewed.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Concentrated liquidity design allows capital-efficient positions and tighter pricing where liquidity is deep
  • Runs on two low-cost layer-2 networks, Linea and Base
  • Two audits are listed for the project
  • Has been live and tracked since July 2023, so it is not a brand-new launch
  • Has its own HZN token for ecosystem incentives

Watch out for

  • Total value locked is only about $60,000, so liquidity is thin and larger trades can move the price
  • TVL fell about 6.8% over the past week, which suggests little growth in deposits
  • The team, fee tiers and audit providers are not published in the material reviewed
  • Concentrated liquidity carries impermanent loss, and positions can stop earning when the price leaves the chosen range
  • The HZN token adds price and incentive risk on top of normal DEX risk

HorizonDEX fees

HorizonDEX does not publish its fee schedule in the material reviewed. Concentrated liquidity DEXs usually offer several swap fee tiers per pool, with the fee paid by traders and earned by liquidity providers in range, but the exact tiers here are not confirmed.

Expect to pay network gas on Linea or Base for every swap, deposit and withdrawal, plus slippage on thin pools. Fee tiers and price impact are shown in the app before you confirm a transaction.

Is HorizonDEX safe?

Two audits are listed for HorizonDEX, but the material reviewed does not name the auditors or link the reports. Audits reduce risk but do not remove it, and the contracts are still exposed to bugs, oracle or pricing issues and the usual DeFi exploit risks. The project does not publish team or custody details in the material reviewed, though a DEX is non-custodial and funds stay in your wallet unless you deposit them in a pool.

With only about $60,000 in locked value, pools are easy to move and may be hard to exit at a fair price. No hacks or incidents are mentioned in the material reviewed. Only use funds you can afford to lose, and verify you are on the official site.

6 steps

How to get started with HorizonDEX

  1. 1

Install a wallet that supports EVM networks, such as MetaMask, and secure the recovery phrase offline.

  2. 2

Bridge a small amount of ETH to Linea or Base to pay for gas.

  3. 3

Open the official HorizonDEX site and confirm you are on the correct address before connecting your wallet.

  4. 4

Start with a small swap and check the quoted price impact and fee tier before confirming.

  5. 5

If you want to provide liquidity, pick a pool and a price range, and read how impermanent loss works first.

  6. 6

Review the audit reports and the HZN token details in the project's documentation before committing larger amounts.

Who HorizonDEX is for

HorizonDEX is for DeFi users who already understand liquidity pools, price ranges and impermanent loss, and who want exposure to a small DEX on Linea or Base. It is not well suited to beginners, to large traders who need deep liquidity, or to anyone who wants a long, well-documented track record.

HorizonDEX FAQs

What is HorizonDEX?

HorizonDEX is a decentralized exchange built around concentrated liquidity. Liquidity providers choose a custom price range for their capital, and traders swap against those pools. It runs on Linea and Base.

Which blockchains does HorizonDEX support?

It runs on Linea and Base. Its homepage describes it as a leading concentrated liquidity DEX on Linea.

Does HorizonDEX have a token?

Yes, it has a token called HZN. The material reviewed does not describe its supply, distribution or exact utility, so check the project's own documentation before relying on it.

Has HorizonDEX been audited?

Two audits are listed for the project, but the auditors and reports are not named in the material reviewed. Read the reports yourself, and remember an audit does not remove smart-contract risk.

What are the risks of providing liquidity on HorizonDEX?

The main risks are smart-contract bugs, impermanent loss, positions drifting out of range, and the very low liquidity. Prices can be volatile, and large swaps may suffer noticeable slippage.

What fees does HorizonDEX charge?

Fee tiers are not stated in the material reviewed. They are normally shown in the app when you pick a pool or open a position, so check them there before you commit funds.
