Our verdict on BTCFi CDP

6.0/10

BTCFi CDP suits Bitcoin holders who want stablecoin liquidity without selling BTC and who are comfortable with CDP liquidation risk. Its main strengths are a recognizable team behind Bifrost and BiFi and a stated Theori audit. The main caveats are the small scale of the protocol, reliance on wrapped BTC, and the lack of published fees, collateral ratios and audit details. Read the documentation and start small.

What is BTCFi CDP?

BTCFi CDP is a Bitcoin-focused borrowing protocol from the team behind Bifrost Network and the BiFi lending platform. Users lock BTC as collateral and mint BtcUSD, a dollar-pegged stablecoin backed by Bitcoin. The idea is to let BTC holders earn on their coins instead of leaving them idle.

DefiLlama tracks the protocol across Bifrost Network, Bitcoin, Base and Core, with roughly 7.1 million dollars in total value locked and no listed audits or token. It has been tracked since April 2024. The homepage says it has been audited by Theori.

The broader Bitcoin DeFi sector has had a rough run. One analysis published in 2026 reports Bitcoin DeFi contracting to about 91,000 BTC by mid-2026, and another review site describes weak uptake, low yields and clunky user experience. BTCFi CDP is a small player in that context.

How BTCFi CDP works

BTCFi is a collateralized debt position (CDP) protocol. A user supplies Bitcoin, held as a supported asset on a network such as Ethereum, Polygon or BNB Chain, as collateral. The protocol then lets them mint BtcUSD, a stablecoin, up to a limit set by the value of the collateral. Bifrost cross-chain technology handles moving collateral from various networks.

Because the collateral is Bitcoin, the stablecoin is exposed to BTC price swings. If the collateral value drops too far relative to the debt, a position can be liquidated. The homepage claims a stronger peg and less chance of liquidation than other crypto-backed stablecoins, but it does not publish the specific ratios.

Once minted, BtcUSD can go into BiFi or Everdex stablecoin pools for variable rewards, be swapped into other assets, or be used on other protocols that support it. The roadmap lists an automated BTC vault and native BTC deposits as later steps.

Key features

01

BTC-collateralized minting

Supply BTC from supported networks as collateral and mint BtcUSD against it, using Bifrost cross-chain technology.

02

BtcUSD stablecoin

BtcUSD is a dollar-pegged stablecoin backed by Bitcoin rather than a mix of volatile altcoins.

03

Stablecoin pool rewards

BtcUSD can be deposited into BiFi or Everdex stablecoin pools to access variable protocol rewards.

04

Leveraged trading access

BtcUSD can be swapped into other coins, including BTC, to take leveraged positions.

05

Cross-chain collateral

BTC held on different networks can be used as collateral, so users do not need to move to one chain first.

06

Roadmap: vaults and native BTC

The roadmap lists an automated vault for BTC routing and native BTC deposits verified by Bifrost node validators.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Backed by the Bifrost Network and BiFi team, which is named on the homepage.
  • Homepage states an audit by Theori.
  • Lets BTC holders mint a stablecoin without selling their Bitcoin.
  • BtcUSD has uses in BiFi and Everdex pools and in leveraged trading.
  • Collateral can come from several networks through cross-chain technology.

Watch out for

  • Only one audit firm is named on the homepage, and no audit report or date is given publicly.
  • Collateral is mostly wrapped BTC (WBTC, BTCB, cbBTC) at launch, which adds issuer and bridge risk; native BTC support was a roadmap item.
  • BtcUSD is a small stablecoin whose use cases are mostly within the Bifrost and BiFi ecosystem.
  • Rewards are described as variable, with no yield figures or fee schedule published.
  • The homepage shows a 2024 copyright and a roadmap with quarterly items without years, so it is hard to tell which features have shipped.
  • Third-party commentary describes the wider Bitcoin DeFi sector as facing weak uptake, low yields and clunky user experience.

BTCFi CDP fees

The project does not publish specific fees, such as minting fees, interest rates or liquidation penalties. Users would see these in the app and documentation before opening a position.

Rewards from stablecoin pools are described only as variable. Network gas fees on the chain you use will also apply.

Is BTCFi CDP safe?

The homepage states the protocol has undergone audits by Theori, but DefiLlama lists no audits and no report is linked. Users should look for the report in the project documentation before depositing.

Risks include smart contract bugs, liquidation if BTC falls, and dependence on wrapped Bitcoin issuers and cross-chain mechanisms. The project says users maintain control of their funds, but it does not publish details on governance, admin keys or emergency controls. The site lists Bifrosoft PTE LTD in its copyright line. No regulatory status or past incidents are given publicly.

6 steps

How to get started with BTCFi CDP

  1. 1

Check that using DeFi protocols is permitted where you live and that you understand liquidation risk.

  2. 2

Get a supported BTC asset such as WBTC, BTCB or cbBTC, either from a centralized exchange or through a decentralized exchange swap.

  3. 3

Connect a compatible wallet on a supported network through the Launch BTCFi button on the official site.

  4. 4

Read the documentation for collateral ratios, fees and liquidation terms before depositing.

  5. 5

Supply BTC as collateral and mint BtcUSD in a small amount first.

  6. 6

Decide whether to hold BtcUSD, deposit it into a BiFi or Everdex pool, or trade it, and monitor your collateral ratio.

Who BTCFi CDP is for

BTCFi CDP is for Bitcoin holders who already use DeFi and want to borrow a stablecoin against BTC instead of selling. It also suits users in the Bifrost, BiFi or Everdex ecosystem. It is a poor fit for anyone who wants a simple yield product with guaranteed returns or who cannot monitor a collateral position.

BTCFi CDP FAQs

What is BTCFi CDP?

BTCFi is a decentralized, cross-chain Bitcoin asset management platform from the Bifrost Network team. Users supply BTC as collateral and mint BtcUSD, a Bitcoin-backed stablecoin.

What is BtcUSD and what can it be used for?

BtcUSD is a stablecoin pegged to the US dollar and collateralized with Bitcoin. It can be deposited into BiFi or Everdex stablecoin pools for variable rewards, traded into other coins including BTC for leveraged trading, or used on other protocols that support it.

Which Bitcoin assets can I use as collateral?

The homepage mentions support for WBTC on Ethereum and Polygon and BTCB on BNB Chain, and its help text refers to cbBTC, WBTC and BTCB. Native BTC deposits, verified by Bifrost validators, are listed on the roadmap. You can buy these assets on exchanges or swap for them on decentralized exchanges.

Has BTCFi been audited?

The homepage says the protocol has been audited by Theori. It does not link an audit report, and no other audits are listed. As with any smart contract protocol, an audit reduces but does not remove risk.

Is there a risk of losing my BTC collateral?

Yes. Minting a stablecoin against crypto collateral carries liquidation risk if the collateral value falls too far, along with smart contract, bridge and wrapped-asset risks. The project does not publish specific liquidation ratios, so check the documentation before borrowing.

Does BTCFi have its own token?

No. DefiLlama lists no token for the protocol. Public sources name BtcUSD as the stablecoin but no governance or reward token.
