What NEO is
NEO is the native token of the Neo blockchain, a smart contract platform that began life as Antshares and was developed by the Shanghai-based company OnChain. The project is often called the "Ethereum of China" and is frequently described as one of the first open source blockchains from China. Its stated aim is a "smart economy", which the project summarizes as digital assets plus digital identity plus smart contracts.
The idea is that real-world assets such as company shares, property or even fiat money could be registered, issued and traded on-chain, with digital identity tying those assets to verified people or organizations. Neo's identity concept uses layered authentication, which the project describes as including facial and voice recognition and fingerprints. Digital certificates on the public chain are meant to give an unalterable record of who holds what.
Like most smart contract platforms, Neo hosts decentralized applications and tokens. NEO itself sits at the center of the network as the asset tied to ownership and governance, while a second token handles fees.
What the token is used for
NEO has a different role from the fee token on most chains. Public descriptions say NEO holders are treated as owners of the network and can take part in governance, including voting on protocol changes and other system matters. NEO is also described as usable for holding, sending and staking.
Transaction costs are paid in a separate token, GAS. According to the project's materials, GAS covers network fees and smart contract deployment. In the usual model, holding NEO generates GAS rewards over time, which links the two assets together.
Because the details of staking, voting and reward rates have changed across versions of the network, check the current documentation for how they work today rather than relying on older articles. In short, NEO is the governance and ownership asset, and GAS is the fuel for activity on the chain.
Supply and tokenomics
NEO has a total supply of 100 million tokens and no separate maximum supply listed in the data. About 70.53 million were in circulation as of 2026-11-05, which is roughly 70 percent of the total.
The early distribution came through two crowdsales. The first, in October 2015, sold 17.5 million NEO for about $550,000. The second sold a further 22.5 million NEO for about $4.5 million. The remainder of the supply was set aside under the project's own allocation, which has been a long-running point of discussion among observers.
As of 2026-11-05, the price was about $1.97, giving a market capitalization of around $138.7 million and a fully diluted valuation of about $196.7 million. The token ranked around 217th by market cap, with roughly $3.1 million traded over 24 hours. These figures move constantly and are given only as a snapshot, not as a view on direction.
Chains, holding and trading
NEO is the native token of the Neo chain, which is a proof-of-stake style network according to common category listings. Its consensus is delegated, with a limited group of elected nodes producing blocks, though you should confirm the current setup in the official documentation.
Most people hold NEO in a wallet that supports the Neo network, whether that is a software wallet, a hardware wallet with support, or a balance on an exchange. The token also trades on centralized exchanges against major assets such as USD and stablecoins. Bridged versions may exist on other chains, but the data here lists none as issued, so treat any wrapped version with extra care and confirm the contract and the bridge operator before using it.
The token trades in whole units on the native chain, which differs from many assets that are divisible into tiny fractions. Check this in your wallet before sending, since it affects how small a transfer can be.
History and notable events
The project's token began trading in October 2016 as Antshares, after crowdsales in 2015, and it was later rebranded as Neo. Its all-time low of about $0.078 was recorded in October 2016, shortly after launch. Its all-time high was about $198.38 on 2018-01-14, during the peak of that cycle.
At the time of writing, the price sits far below that peak. The data shows a drop of about 58 percent over the past year and about 4.7 percent over the last seven days. That shows how volatile the asset has been, not where it goes next.
Neo has moved through major version changes over the years, with the platform often referred to by its generation, such as Neo Legacy and the newer Neo N3. If you read older material, check which version it describes, because architecture, fees and tools differ between them.
Risks to understand
NEO carries the usual risks of a mid-cap crypto asset. Price swings can be large, and a one-year decline of over half shows what that can look like in practice. Liquidity is thinner than for the largest coins, with daily volume of only a few million dollars at the time of writing, so larger orders can move the price.
There are also project-specific points to weigh. Smart contract platforms compete heavily for developers and users, and adoption can shift quickly. Governance in a delegated system concentrates block production in a small set of nodes. A sizable share of supply is not yet in circulation, so future releases could add selling pressure. The difference between market cap and fully diluted value reflects that.
Finally, outdated guides can mislead, since the platform has changed across versions. Scams such as fake wallets, phishing sites and fake token swaps target holders of every major coin. None of this is advice to buy or sell.
How to store NEO safely
Keep long-term holdings off exchanges if you do not need to trade them, since an exchange controls the keys on your behalf. A hardware wallet that supports Neo is generally the safer option for larger balances, and an official or well-reviewed software wallet suits smaller amounts.
Write your recovery phrase on paper or metal, store it offline in more than one secure place, and never type it into a website or share it with anyone, including people claiming to be support staff. Download wallet software only from the official source, and double-check addresses before sending, ideally with a small test transfer first.
If you want to use NEO for governance or to generate GAS, confirm the current process in the official documentation and use only tools you can verify. Be cautious about any service that asks for approval to move your assets or promises fixed returns.
By the numbers
NEO in numbers
NEO (NEO) is ranked #215 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $136M and a price of $1.92 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation is $192M, so roughly 71% of the eventual supply is in circulation today; tokens still to be released could add selling pressure.
The price was down 2.2% over 7 days, down 20.9% over 30 days, down 60.1% over the past year. It trades about 99% below its all-time high of $198.38, set on Jan 14, 2018.
About 70.53M NEO are in circulation, from a total supply of 100M. No hard maximum supply is listed.
24-hour trading volume was about $3.76M, or 2.8% of its market cap: moderate turnover.

NEO FAQs
What is NEO?
NEO is the native token of the Neo blockchain, a smart contract platform that started as Antshares. It is associated with network ownership and governance, while a second token, GAS, pays for fees.
What is the difference between NEO and GAS?
NEO is used for governance, such as voting on network matters, and for holding and staking. GAS, not NEO, is the token used to pay transaction fees and deploy smart contracts.
How many NEO tokens are there?
The total supply is 100 million NEO. About 70.53 million were circulating as of 2026-11-05, and the data lists no separate maximum supply.
When was NEO launched?
NEO launched in October 2016 as Antshares after crowdsales in 2015. It was rebranded to Neo later, and the network has gone through several major versions since.
What was the NEO all-time high?
Its all-time high was about $198.38 on 2018-01-14. As of 2026-11-05 the price was about $1.97, far below that peak. This is a historical snapshot, not a forecast.
Where can I store NEO?
Many people hold it in a wallet that supports the Neo network, including hardware wallets where supported, rather than leaving it on an exchange. Keep your recovery phrase offline and only use official software.
What is the market cap of NEO?
As of Nov 6, 2026, NEO had a market cap of about $136M, ranking #215 among cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. Market cap is price multiplied by circulating supply, so it moves with the price.
What is the all-time high of NEO?
