What Livepeer (LPT) is
Livepeer is a decentralized network for video streaming and, more recently, AI video processing. Instead of relying on one company's servers to convert and deliver video, the network lets independent operators offer GPU computing power and bandwidth, and get paid for the jobs they complete. The stated aim of the project is to give broadcasters and app developers a cheaper, open alternative to centralized video infrastructure, and to act as a live media layer for web3 applications.
LPT is the protocol token of this network. It is not the token that customers pay with. Broadcasters pay fees in Ether, and node operators earn those fees for the processing work they do. LPT sits one layer below that: it is a staking token used to organize and secure the network.
At the time of writing, LPT ranks around 351 by market capitalization and is grouped in AI and DePIN (decentralized physical infrastructure) categories. Those labels reflect the compute-for-hire model rather than any guarantee about adoption or demand.
What the token is used for
LPT works as a bonding token in a delegated proof-of-stake design. Holders can stake it directly or delegate it to an operator, often called an orchestrator (earlier documents say transcoder), who performs the video processing and validates work. Delegating does not hand over custody of the tokens, but the stake is bound to that operator while it is active.
The amount of stake behind an operator influences how much work is routed to it, so stake acts as a coordination signal for the network. Stake also provides security: operators who break protocol rules can be penalized through slashing, which gives them a financial reason to do the work honestly and correctly.
Stakers are rewarded in two ways, according to the project's own description. They receive newly issued LPT, since the system is inflationary, and they share in the ETH fees that broadcasters pay for processing. Rewards depend on the operator chosen and on how that operator sets its reward and fee terms. LPT is also used for governance votes on protocol changes, in common with many staking networks.
Supply and tokenomics
At the time of writing, as of 2026-11-05, the circulating supply is about 49.7 million LPT, and the total supply is reported at the same figure. No fixed maximum supply is listed, which fits the project's description of an inflationary design in which new tokens are issued to participants who stake.
Because circulating and total supply match, the fully diluted valuation and market capitalization are both about $69.6 million. The price was about $1.40 and 24-hour trading volume about $6.5 million. These numbers move constantly and are shown only as a snapshot.
Issuance matters for holders. When new tokens are created and given to stakers, people who do not stake see their share of the supply shrink over time, while stakers are compensated. How strongly this plays out depends on the share of tokens that are staked, which the protocol uses to adjust issuance. The exact current inflation rate and staking participation are published by the protocol itself and change over time, so check current figures instead of relying on a fixed number.
Chains, holding and trading
LPT was first issued on Ethereum, and it is also listed as issued on Arbitrum and Harmony. LPT is not the native coin of any blockchain; it is a token that lives on these networks. Activity such as staking and reward distribution has been centered on the Arbitrum deployment, which keeps transaction costs lower than on Ethereum's main network. Confirm which network a given balance sits on before you move it.
Most people hold LPT in a self-custody wallet that supports Ethereum-compatible networks, or on a centralized exchange. Trading takes place on exchanges and decentralized exchanges. Staking is done through the Livepeer explorer and its connected wallet interface, where you pick an orchestrator to delegate to.
Sending tokens to the wrong network or address can cause permanent loss, so test with a small transfer first. Staking also requires a small amount of ETH on the relevant network to pay gas, and withdrawing delegated stake involves an unbonding waiting period.
History and notable events
Livepeer began as a project to build decentralized live video infrastructure, and the data lists the token's launch in October 2018. It attracted backing from well-known crypto investment firms, and the token appears in several institutional-style portfolio and index groupings, including DePIN-focused ones.
Price history has been volatile. LPT reached an all-time high of about $99 on 2021-11-09, during the broader market peak that year, and had an all-time low of about $0.35 in October 2019. As of 2026-11-05, the price was down roughly 71 percent over the previous year and about 5.6 percent over the previous seven days.
In more recent years the project has broadened its pitch from video transcoding to AI video processing, using the same network of GPU operators for new kinds of jobs. How much real paying demand comes from that shift is something readers should check in network usage and fee data rather than assume. The project's own site rates it in our research at 7 out of 10 within the infrastructure category.
Risks to understand
The main risk is market risk. A drop of about 71 percent in a year, and a price far below the 2021 high, show how sharply LPT can swing. The token has no fixed supply cap, so ongoing issuance can dilute holders who do not stake.
There is also adoption risk. The network competes with large centralized video and cloud providers, as well as other decentralized compute projects. Its value to stakers depends partly on whether broadcasters and AI developers pay fees in meaningful amounts.
Staking carries its own risks. Delegating to an operator that behaves badly or goes offline may reduce rewards, and slashing is part of the protocol design. Unbonding takes time, so you cannot always exit instantly. Smart contract bugs, bridge problems across chains and governance decisions that change reward rules are additional possibilities. With a market cap of about $69.6 million, LPT is a small asset, and thinner liquidity can mean larger price moves on modest trades. None of this is investment advice.
How to store LPT safely
For longer-term holdings, a hardware wallet that supports Ethereum-compatible networks is the usual choice, because the private keys stay on the device. Write the recovery phrase on paper, keep it offline, and never type it into a website, a chat or a support form. No genuine team will ask for it.
Before staking, double-check that you are using the correct Livepeer interface by typing the address yourself or using a bookmark you made earlier, since fake staking pages and phishing links are common in crypto. Read each transaction in your wallet before approving it, and be wary of token approvals that give broad spending permissions.
Keep a small ETH balance on the network you use for fees. Avoid leaving large balances on an exchange longer than needed, since exchange holdings are controlled by the platform. Finally, keep records of your transactions, as staking rewards may have tax consequences depending on where you live.
By the numbers
Livepeer in numbers
Livepeer (LPT) is ranked #347 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $68.4M and a price of $1.38 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($68.4M) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.
The price was down 2.9% over 7 days, down 20.5% over 30 days, down 73.6% over the past year. It trades about 99% below its all-time high of $99.03, set on Nov 9, 2021.
About 49.69M LPT are in circulation. No hard maximum supply is listed, so new tokens can still be issued.
24-hour trading volume was about $7.12M, or 10% of its market cap: high turnover.
LPT has token contracts on 3 chains we track, including Ethereum, Harmony, Arbitrum. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.

LPT FAQs
What is LPT used for?
LPT is the staking token of the Livepeer network. Holders bond it to operators who process video, which helps route work and secure the network. It is also used in governance votes. Customers do not pay with it; fees are paid in ETH.
Do you pay for Livepeer services with LPT?
Broadcasters pay fees in Ether, and node operators earn those fees. LPT is a separate staking token. Stakers earn newly issued LPT and a share of ETH fees, depending on the operator they delegate to.
Does LPT have a maximum supply?
No fixed maximum supply is listed. As of 2026-11-05 the circulating and total supply were both about 49.7 million LPT. The protocol issues new tokens to stakers, so supply can grow over time.
Which blockchains does LPT run on?
LPT was first issued on Ethereum and is also issued on Arbitrum and Harmony. It is not the native coin of any chain. Check which network your tokens are on before sending them anywhere.
Can I stake LPT?
Yes, through delegation. You choose an orchestrator on the Livepeer interface and bond your tokens to it, while keeping them in your own wallet. Rewards vary by operator, slashing is possible, and unbonding takes a waiting period.
Why is LPT far below its all-time high?
At the time of writing, the price was down about 71 percent over the past year, as of 2026-11-05. Such a fall reflects broad market conditions and project-specific factors, but no single cause can be confirmed from the data here.
