What Helium is

Helium is a decentralized wireless network built from hardware that ordinary people and businesses install. The devices are called Hotspots or gateways. Each one broadcasts a radio signal that nearby machines, such as sensors, trackers and meters, can use to get online. Hotspot owners are paid in the network's token, HNT, according to the coverage they provide and the data that passes through their equipment.

The project falls into the category usually called DePIN, short for decentralized physical infrastructure networks. The idea is that a crowd of independent operators builds infrastructure that a telecom company would normally own, and a token pays them for doing it. Helium started with low-power networks for Internet of Things devices and later added a cellular-style offering under the Helium Mobile brand.

The project's own description says gateways double as miners, and that the network checks coverage through a process called Proof of Coverage. In plain terms, Hotspots help verify that other Hotspots really are where they claim to be and really are providing signal. HNT sits at the center of this system as both the reward and the unit that links usage to operator income.

What HNT is used for

HNT has two main jobs. The first is paying the people who build and run the network. Hotspot operators earn HNT for providing and validating wireless coverage, and for carrying data from devices that connect through their gateways.

The second is paying for network usage, though not directly. Users burn HNT to create Data Credits, which are non-transferable units used to cover transaction fees and to send sensor data across the network. Because Data Credits are created by burning HNT, real usage of the network permanently removes tokens from circulation. The size of that effect depends entirely on how much paying demand exists, and that is something readers should check in current network data rather than assume.

HNT is also tied to governance and to the network's related tokens. Helium's wider ecosystem has included separate subnetwork tokens for its IoT and mobile networks, and HNT has served as the main token those systems relate to. The exact mechanics have changed over time, so the project's current documentation is the right place to confirm how rewards and burns work today.

In short, HNT is a reward token, a fee-funding token and a governance-linked asset inside one network.

Supply and tokenomics

According to the data available, HNT has a maximum supply of 223 million tokens. Circulating and total supply are both listed at about 200.3 million, so most of the cap has already been issued. Fully diluted valuation and market cap are therefore the same, at about $67.1 million as of 2026-11-05.

The project description in the data says there was no pre-mine and that new tokens were minted at roughly 5 million a month, paid out every 30 to 60 minutes to Hotspot owners, the founding company and investors. That text reflects an earlier version of the network. Emission schedules have been revised since then, including the shift to Solana, so treat the figure as historical context and check the current documentation before relying on it.

Because supply is already close to the cap, future issuance is limited. Token burns for Data Credits work against new emissions, which means the net supply trend depends on network usage and on the current emission rules.

At the time of writing, HNT ranks around 360 by market cap, with roughly $2.5 million in 24-hour trading volume. Those numbers move constantly and are only a snapshot.

Chains, holding and trading

HNT is issued on Solana. Helium originally ran on its own purpose-built blockchain, and the network later moved its token and operations onto Solana. As a Solana token, HNT can be held in wallets that support that network and can interact with the wider Solana ecosystem, including decentralized exchanges.

There are a few general ways people hold and trade it. Some use centralized exchanges, where HNT trades against stablecoins or major coins and the exchange holds the keys. Others use self-custody wallets on Solana and swap through decentralized trading apps. Hotspot operators receive rewards directly to a wallet they control.

A few practical points are worth knowing. Solana transactions need a small amount of SOL for fees, so a wallet holding only HNT may not be able to move it. Token addresses can be imitated by fake tokens with the same name, so confirm the official token address from the project's own channels before swapping. Older guides may describe the previous Helium chain, its wallet and its hardware setup, and those details may no longer apply.

Liquidity is modest compared with large tokens, so large orders can move the price noticeably.

History and notable events

Helium launched its network around 2019, with the HNT token and the first LoRa-based Hotspots, and the data here does not give an exact launch date. The project drew venture backing from firms including Andreessen Horowitz, Multicoin Capital, Pantera Capital and Alameda Research, which is reflected in how the token is categorized.

The token reached its all-time high of about $54.88 on 2021-11-12, during the broad crypto market peak. Its all-time low of about $0.113 was recorded on 2020-04-17, well before that rally. As of 2026-11-05 the price was about $0.335, roughly 84.5% below where it stood a year earlier and down about 11.55% over the previous seven days.

Over its life the project has changed considerably. It grew from a LoRaWAN-focused Internet of Things network into a broader platform that includes mobile coverage, and it moved from its own blockchain to Solana. It has also been included in the Coinbase 50 Index according to the category data. These are public milestones, but exact dates and governance votes are best confirmed in the project's official announcements.

Risks

HNT carries the usual risks of a small-cap crypto asset, plus some specific to its model.

Price volatility. The token is far below its 2021 peak and fell sharply over the past year. Large swings in either direction can happen quickly, and thin liquidity can make exits costly.

Demand risk. The network only supports itself if paying users generate enough Data Credit burns to justify the rewards. If usage is small compared with token emissions, the economics lean on speculation rather than revenue.

Competition. Helium competes with established telecom providers and with other IoT and wireless networks. Coverage quality and device adoption matter more than token excitement.

Operator economics. Hotspot hardware costs money, rewards are paid in a volatile token, and reward formulas have changed before. Operators may not recover their costs.

Technical and regulatory risk. Smart contract bugs, wallet scams and fake tokens are all possible on Solana. Rules about how crypto rewards and telecom services are treated can also change.

Nothing here is a recommendation to buy or sell. Anyone considering HNT should read the current documentation and only risk money they can afford to lose.

How to store HNT safely

How you store HNT depends on how much you hold and how often you move it.

For small amounts you trade often, a reputable exchange account can be convenient, but you rely on the exchange's security and solvency. Turn on two-factor authentication using an authenticator app rather than SMS, and use a unique password.

For longer-term holdings, a self-custody wallet that supports Solana is generally safer. A hardware wallet keeps your private keys offline, which protects against many phishing and malware attacks. Write your recovery phrase on paper or metal, store it somewhere secure and never type it into a website, share it in a chat, or photograph it. No legitimate support team will ask for it.

Before any transfer, send a small test amount first, and keep a little SOL in the wallet to cover network fees. Verify the token address from official project sources, because copycat tokens with the same name exist. Be careful with unsolicited airdrops and with sites that ask you to connect a wallet and sign unfamiliar approvals. Revoke permissions you no longer need.

If you run a Hotspot, keep the wallet that receives rewards separate from any device you use for everyday browsing.

By the numbers

Helium in numbers

Helium (HNT) is ranked #377 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $61.3M and a price of $0.3058 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($61.3M) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.

The price was down 15.1% over 7 days, down 40.5% over 30 days, down 87.1% over the past year. It trades about 99% below its all-time high of $54.88, set on Nov 12, 2021.

About 200.5M HNT are in circulation out of a maximum supply of 223M (90% issued).

24-hour trading volume was about $3.99M, or 6.5% of its market cap: moderate turnover.

HNT has token contracts on Solana. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.
