Helium Review 2026: Community-Run Wireless Network and HNT

Helium is a community-run wireless network where Hotspot owners earn crypto for providing coverage, now running on Solana. The idea has real partners, but the HNT token has fallen sharply and earnings are uncertain.

Our verdict on Helium

6.2/10

Helium is a credible attempt to build wireless coverage through community-run Hotspots, with reported partners such as AT&T and Telefónica and a token now on Solana. It suits readers interested in DePIN and willing to research hardware costs and rewards themselves. The main caveat is the economics: HNT dropped about 85% over the past year in late-2026 data, and the project does not publish guaranteed earnings. Treat token rewards as uncertain, not income.

What is Helium?

Helium describes itself as the People-Powered Network: a wireless network where users act as Hotspots and are rewarded in crypto. It started with coverage for IoT devices and later expanded into mobile service using 5G CBRS and Wi-Fi hotspots. It is often grouped under DePIN, or decentralized physical infrastructure.

The project has gained real-world partners. Reports mention an AT&T collaboration, a partnership with Telefónica to roll out mobile hotspots in Mexico, and a Helium Plus program that lets businesses join the network with Wi-Fi. Helium Mobile, the consumer phone service, was acquired by Noble Mobile after dropping its free plan.

The token side is weaker. In late-2026 price data, HNT traded around $0.32 to $0.38, down roughly 85% over the previous year, with a market cap near $67 million. The homepage could not be reviewed, so the details here come from third-party coverage, and Helium's own current rewards and hardware details should be checked directly.

How Helium works

Helium replaces a traditional carrier with a crowd-sourced network. People buy and run Hotspots that broadcast wireless signal in their area. Devices such as IoT sensors, or phones on the mobile network, connect through these Hotspots.

Hotspot owners are paid in crypto for providing coverage and for carrying data. HNT is the native token. MOBILE is a governance token mined by 5G CBRS and Wi-Fi Hotspots that supports the mobile side of the network. The aim is that token incentives bootstrap coverage faster than a single company could build it.

In April 2023 the HNT token moved to Solana from Helium's own blockchain. The network also produces coverage quality metrics, which were reported to be shared with AT&T as part of a collaboration.

6 features

Key features

01

Community-owned coverage

Individuals and businesses run Hotspots that provide wireless coverage, rather than a single carrier building the network.

02

IoT connectivity

The network began as a low-power wide-area network for IoT devices such as sensors and trackers.

03

Mobile network and MOBILE token

Hotspots using 5G CBRS and Wi-Fi earn MOBILE, a separate token that supports the network's mobile service.

04

HNT on Solana

HNT migrated to Solana in April 2023, bringing the token into the Solana ecosystem.

05

Carrier partnerships

A reported collaboration lets AT&T users benefit from Helium's community-run coverage, and AT&T receives coverage quality metrics.

06

Enterprise on-ramps

Helium Plus lets businesses join the network with Wi-Fi, and Telefónica has partnered with Helium on mobile hotspots in Mexico.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Clear real-world use case: wireless coverage provided by community operators
  • Reported partnerships with AT&T and Telefónica show interest from established telecom firms
  • HNT runs on Solana, which gives it access to a large wallet and exchange ecosystem
  • The SEC lawsuit against Nova Labs was dismissed, easing one source of legal uncertainty
  • Business-friendly entry through Helium Plus, which needs only Wi-Fi

Watch out for

  • HNT fell about 85% over the past year in late-2026 price data, so token rewards have lost much of their dollar value
  • Earnings depend on coverage demand and token price, and the project does not publish guaranteed returns
  • Hardware and setup costs, and current reward rates, are not stated in the sources reviewed
  • Helium Mobile, the consumer phone service, was acquired by Noble Mobile, which changes the project's consumer story
  • Nova Labs, the original developer, has faced SEC action, including a settlement and a later-dismissed lawsuit
  • Multiple tokens (HNT, MOBILE) add complexity for newcomers

Helium fees

Helium does not publish a simple fee schedule in the material reviewed. Costs mainly come from buying and installing Hotspot hardware, plus any network or transaction costs on Solana. Specific hardware prices and reward rates are not stated here.

Users should check current figures in the official Helium documentation and the Hotspot manufacturer's store before buying. Token rewards fluctuate with network activity and the HNT and MOBILE prices.

Is Helium safe?

Helium's own audit reports, custody details and team information are not covered in the material reviewed. Rewards go to your own wallet, so you carry the usual self-custody responsibilities: protect your recovery phrase and check any app or site is official before connecting a wallet.

On the regulatory side, the SEC sued Nova Labs in January 2025 and later dismissed the case. Nova Labs had earlier agreed to pay $200,000 to settle SEC allegations that it misled investors. The main practical risks are token price volatility, uncertain reward levels and hardware costs that may not be recovered.

6 steps

How to get started with Helium

  1. 1

Decide whether you want to host a Hotspot, buy HNT, or use the mobile service, since each has a different risk profile.

  2. 2

Read the official Helium documentation to see which Hotspot types are supported and what coverage is needed in your area.

  3. 3

Check hardware costs, installation requirements and expected rewards with the manufacturer before buying.

  4. 4

Set up a Solana-compatible wallet to receive HNT or MOBILE rewards and keep your recovery phrase offline.

  5. 5

Place the Hotspot, complete onboarding in the app, and confirm it is reporting coverage.

  6. 6

Track rewards against your costs and be prepared for token prices to move sharply.

Who Helium is for

Helium suits readers curious about DePIN who want exposure to a real-world wireless network, as well as people with a good Hotspot location and tolerance for token volatility. It is less suited to anyone who needs predictable income or does not want to deal with hardware and a crypto wallet.

Helium FAQs

What is Helium?

Helium is a decentralized wireless network, originally built for IoT devices. People run Hotspots that provide coverage and earn tokens in return. It later added mobile coverage using 5G CBRS and Wi-Fi hotspots.

What is HNT used for?

HNT is Helium's native token. It migrated to Solana in April 2023 and also has an older ERC20 version on Ethereum. Hotspot rewards and network incentives are tied to the token system.

Which blockchain does Helium run on?

Helium moved from its own blockchain to Solana in 2023. Solana now hosts the HNT token and related network accounting. The older ERC20 HNT token on Ethereum still exists.

Can you still earn money running a Helium Hotspot?

Possibly, but the sources reviewed do not publish earning figures. Rewards depend on coverage, network demand and token price. HNT was down roughly 85% over the past year in late-2026 data, so any estimate in dollar terms should be treated with caution.

What happened to Helium Mobile?

Helium Mobile, a mobile service built on the network, was acquired by Noble Mobile, the company of Andrew Yang. Noble said the combined company will offer low-cost plans. The Helium network itself is a separate project.

Has Helium had regulatory trouble?

Nova Labs, the original developer, was sued by the SEC in January 2025. The agency later dismissed the case, and Helium said selling hardware and distributing tokens for network growth does not automatically make them securities. Nova Labs had earlier agreed to pay the SEC $200,000 to settle separate allegations about statements to investors.
