What Gas (GAS) is
Gas (GAS) is one of the two native assets of the Neo blockchain, created by the Neo Foundation. The other is NEO, which acts as the ownership and governance token. GAS is the asset that powers activity on the network, so it plays a role similar to the fuel token on other smart contract platforms.
The project description in our data says GAS is used to pay processing fees for the Neo network and is paid out to NEO holders over time. It describes this as a form of compensation, comparable to interest, for taking part in the network. That description reflects the early design of Neo, and some details have changed as the platform has been rebuilt over the years. The consensus mechanism is not specified in our data beyond the description's reference to proof of stake. Neo's own documentation uses a different term, delegated Byzantine fault tolerance, so check current Neo documentation for how blocks are produced today.
GAS should not be confused with the generic word "gas", which describes transaction fees on many chains. Neo's GAS is a specific token with its own market listing, ticker and history. Our site also lists a separate gaming project called Gas, a Robinhood Chain game, which appears to be a different product. Always confirm the chain and contract before interacting with anything called Gas.
What GAS is used for
The main use of GAS is paying for work done on the Neo network. Sending transfers and running smart contracts consume GAS as a fee, which stops the network from being flooded with free requests and compensates those who keep it running.
The second use is as a reward. According to the project description, NEO holders receive GAS over time. In the early days the rate was roughly one GAS per day for every 1,000 NEO held, and the design was meant to lower that rate gradually. Those figures come from the description and reflect the early release, so they may not match current rules.
Because NEO and GAS are linked, the two assets are often discussed together. Holding NEO has historically been the way to earn GAS, while GAS is what you spend. This split lets NEO represent a stake in the network while GAS handles day-to-day costs.
Beyond fees and rewards, our data does not list other uses for the token. Individual Neo applications may accept or require GAS in other ways, but those are specific to each app. Check an application's own documentation before assuming GAS has a role there.
Supply and tokenomics
As of 2026-11-05, our data shows about 65.1 million GAS in circulation, and the total supply is the same figure. No maximum supply is listed in the data. That means we cannot say there is a fixed cap, and readers should check Neo's current documentation for the issuance rules.
Because circulating and total supply are equal, the fully diluted valuation matches the market cap, which was about $74.9 million at the time of writing. The price was about $1.15, and the token ranked around 328 by market capitalization. Those figures move constantly, so treat them as a snapshot rather than a guide.
GAS is not distributed through a typical venture-style allocation to founders and investors with vesting schedules, at least not according to the information we have. Instead, new GAS is generated by the protocol and flows to participants as rewards. The description notes that the payout rate was designed to decline over time, which is a disinflationary idea, though the pace and mechanics are best confirmed from current Neo sources.
Trading volume over the past 24 hours was about $645,000, which is small relative to the market cap. Lower volume can mean wider spreads and bigger price moves when larger orders hit the market.
Chains, holding and trading
Our data lists GAS as issued on Neo, and it is not the native token of any other chain in our records. In practice GAS lives on the Neo blockchain, where it is held in Neo-compatible wallets and sent between addresses like any other on-chain asset.
You can hold GAS directly on Neo, or leave it with an exchange that lists it. Holding it in your own wallet gives you control of the keys and lets you pay network fees yourself. Leaving it on an exchange is simpler for trading, but you depend on the platform for access and security.
GAS is traded on centralized exchanges, and the market is thin compared with larger assets. Some versions of the token may also exist as wrapped or bridged assets on other networks. We do not have details of those in our data, so verify any wrapped version, its issuer and its contract address before buying or moving funds.
Because GAS is needed to pay fees, people who use Neo applications often keep a small balance in their wallet for transactions. If you hold NEO, check how GAS rewards reach your address, since this depends on the wallet and the current protocol rules.
History and notable events
GAS arrived alongside the Neo project, which began under another name before being rebranded as Neo. Our data does not give a launch date for the token, so we do not state one here.
The notable market history is in the price record. GAS reached an all-time high of about $91.94 on 2018-01-14, during the broad crypto peak of that period. It later fell to an all-time low of about $0.62 on 2020-03-12, the month of a sharp market-wide sell-off. As of 2026-11-05 the price was about $1.15, which is far below the 2018 peak. The one-year change was about -47 percent, and the seven-day change was close to flat at about -0.8 percent.
Those swings show how much the token's value has depended on the wider market and on interest in Neo. Neo has also gone through a major platform rebuild since its early days, and the description we have still reflects the original design. Readers looking for the full timeline of upgrades, governance changes and ecosystem events should consult Neo's official announcements, as we do not have verified details here.
Risks to understand
GAS carries the usual risks of a small-cap crypto asset, plus a few specific ones.
Price risk. The token is far below its 2018 high and lost roughly 47 percent over the past year, as of 2026-11-05. Prices can move sharply in either direction, and past performance says nothing about the future.
Liquidity risk. Daily volume of about $645,000 is modest. Selling or buying a large amount may move the price, and some venues may have thin order books.
Dependence on Neo. GAS has no purpose apart from the Neo network. If activity on Neo falls, demand for fees may fall with it. Changes to how GAS is issued or distributed could also affect holders.
Name confusion. Gas is a common word. Other tokens, apps and games use the name, including a separate Robinhood Chain game listed on our site. Scammers can also create look-alike tokens. Verify the chain, ticker and contract before acting.
Information risk. Parts of the public description of GAS are dated and may not match how the network works now. Rely on current Neo documentation for details that matter to you.

How to store GAS safely
Because GAS lives on Neo, use a wallet that supports Neo and is maintained by a reputable team. Download wallet software only from official sources, and check that the app is the genuine one, since fake wallets are a common route for theft.
Write down your recovery phrase or private key on paper and keep it offline in a secure place. Never type it into a website, share it in a chat or store it in a screenshot or cloud note. Anyone who has it controls your funds, and support staff from legitimate projects will never ask for it.
For larger holdings, consider a hardware wallet if it supports Neo. This keeps your keys on a separate device that signs transactions without exposing them to your computer. Check the hardware wallet's compatibility list before buying.
Send a small test transaction before moving a large amount, and double-check the receiving address character by character. Keep a little GAS available to pay fees, so that you can move other assets when needed.
If you leave GAS on an exchange, enable two-factor authentication, use a unique password and be aware that you are relying on the platform. Moving funds you do not need for trading into your own wallet reduces that exposure.
By the numbers
Gas in numbers
Gas (GAS) is ranked #331 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $72.9M and a price of $1.12 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($72.9M) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.
The price was down 1.7% over 7 days, down 17.7% over 30 days, down 51.3% over the past year. It trades about 99% below its all-time high of $91.94, set on Jan 14, 2018.
About 65.09M GAS are in circulation. No hard maximum supply is listed, so new tokens can still be issued.
24-hour trading volume was about $1.02M, or 1.4% of its market cap: low turnover, so large orders can move the price.
GAS has token contracts on Neo. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.
GAS is linked to Gas, which we cover in our GameFi rankings. See our Gas page for how the protocol works and how we score it.

GAS FAQs
What is Gas (GAS) used for?
GAS is used to pay fees for transactions and smart contract activity on the Neo blockchain. It is also paid to NEO holders as a reward for participating in the network, according to the project description.
Is GAS the same as NEO?
No. NEO is the governance and ownership token of the Neo blockchain, while GAS is the token used for fees and rewards. The two were created together by the Neo Foundation and are closely linked, but they are separate assets.
How many GAS tokens are there?
Our data lists about 65.1 million GAS in circulation as of 2026-11-05, equal to the total supply. No maximum supply is listed, so check current Neo documentation for the issuance rules.
What is the price history of GAS?
GAS reached about $91.94 on 2018-01-14 and about $0.62 on 2020-03-12. As of 2026-11-05 it traded near $1.15, with a market cap of roughly $74.9 million. These numbers change constantly.
Is Gas the same as the Gas game on Robinhood Chain?
Not necessarily. Our site lists a separate game called Gas on Robinhood Chain, which appears to be a different project from Neo's GAS token. Check the chain, ticker and contract address before buying or interacting with anything named Gas.
Where can I store GAS?
Use a reputable Neo-compatible wallet, keep your recovery phrase offline and never share it. A hardware wallet is an option for larger amounts if it supports Neo. Holding on an exchange is more convenient but relies on the platform's security.
