## What is BitShares (BTS)?

BitShares (BTS) is the native asset of the BitShares blockchain, a project launched in 2014. BitShares is designed to support blockchain-based trading and decentralized applications, including a decentralized exchange where users can trade digital assets without relying on a conventional exchange operator to hold their funds. The project has also been described in connection with decentralized autonomous companies, or DACs.

BitShares uses delegated proof-of-stake (DPoS) consensus. In DPoS systems, token holders generally have a role in selecting or supporting network representatives who help operate the blockchain. This differs from proof-of-work networks, where miners compete to produce blocks. The precise features and current activity of a network can change, so the consensus label alone does not show how widely the chain is used or how secure it is in practice.

Public descriptions also refer to user-issued assets on BitShares, including IOU-style assets intended to track other values. Such assets depend on their issuer and the systems used to support them; they are not automatically equivalent to the assets they represent.

## What is BTS used for?

BTS is used within the BitShares ecosystem for participation and platform services. Its role is tied to the blockchain’s operation and its decentralized exchange, rather than to a claim on a company’s profits or ownership. BitShares has also been associated with DACs, where blockchain-based organizations can use network tools to coordinate activity.

The platform’s exchange design aims to let users trade digital assets directly on the blockchain. BitShares has supported user-issued assets that may represent claims or track values such as currencies or other financial references. These assets can have different terms and risks from BTS itself: an IOU-style asset may depend on an issuer honoring a claim, while a price-tracking asset may not keep its intended value under all conditions.

Whether BTS is useful to a particular user depends on the present availability and activity of BitShares services. Before using an exchange or an issued asset, check the current market, asset terms, fees, and the identity or reliability of any issuer. Do not assume that a token or asset described as tracking something is backed or redeemable unless its terms clearly establish that.

## BTS network and supply

BTS is the native token of the BitShares blockchain, not an asset identified here as being issued on Ethereum or another external network. If you move BTS or interact with a BitShares application, make sure your wallet and the receiving service support the BitShares network specifically. Similar token symbols on different networks can refer to unrelated assets, and sending funds to an incompatible address can result in loss.

As of 2026-11-05, the reported circulating and total supply was about 3.00 billion BTS, with a maximum supply of about 3.60 billion. These are token counts, not a measure of value, and supply figures can change. On the same date, BTS had an approximate market capitalization of $2.9 million and 24-hour trading volume of about $62,800. Both figures are snapshots and may move substantially over time; trading volume can also differ between data sources and exchanges.

The supply figures do not guarantee that all tokens are available to trade or that markets will have enough liquidity for a particular order. Check current network and market information before making a transaction.

## Risks and storage

BTS carries the risks of a volatile crypto asset. Its market value can change sharply, and a relatively small market capitalization or limited trading activity can make it harder to buy or sell at a desired price. Historical prices do not establish future performance. The project’s age also does not by itself demonstrate current adoption, active development, or continuing demand.

There are additional network and asset risks. DPoS depends on the design and operation of its elected or delegated participants, and users should review current information about network governance and security. BitShares-issued assets may carry issuer, collateral, redemption, or price-tracking risks that differ from those of BTS. A decentralized exchange can also expose users to transaction mistakes, software faults, and market losses.

For storage, use a wallet that explicitly supports native BTS on BitShares, and confirm the network and address before sending. Keep recovery phrases private and offline, never share them with support staff or websites, and consider a small test transfer when appropriate. Do not assume that a wallet supporting another asset with the BTS symbol can hold native BTS.

By the numbers

BitShares in numbers

BitShares (BTS) is ranked #2,155 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $2.59M and a price of $0.0008653 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($2.59M) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.

The price was down 3.8% over 7 days, down 37.0% over 30 days, down 11.5% over the past year. It trades about 100% below its all-time high of $0.9239, set on Jan 2, 2018.

About 3B BTS are in circulation out of a maximum supply of 3.6B (83% issued).

24-hour trading volume was about $68.5K, or 2.6% of its market cap: moderate turnover.

CoinGecko groups BTS under Layer 1 tokens.

BTS FAQs

What is BitShares (BTS)?

BTS is the native asset of the BitShares blockchain. It is used for participation and services within the BitShares ecosystem.

What is BTS used for?

BTS is associated with the operation and services of the BitShares network, including its decentralized exchange. Specific uses and features may depend on current network functionality.

What is the supply of BTS?

As of 2026-11-05, the reported circulating and total supply was about 3.00 billion BTS, with a maximum supply of about 3.60 billion. Supply figures can change, so check an up-to-date source before relying on them.

What consensus mechanism does BitShares use?

BitShares uses delegated proof-of-stake consensus. In this type of system, token holders generally help select or support representatives involved in operating the network.

How do I store BTS?

Use a wallet that explicitly supports native BTS on the BitShares network. Verify the network and receiving address before sending, and keep your recovery phrase private and securely backed up.

What is the market cap of BitShares?

As of Nov 6, 2026, BitShares had a market cap of about $2.59M, ranking #2,155 among cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. Market cap is price multiplied by circulating supply, so it moves with the price.

What is the all-time high of BTS?

BitShares's all-time high is $0.9239, reached on Jan 2, 2018. Its all-time low is $0.000003200 (Sep 18, 2025). Past prices say nothing about future returns.
