Tributary Review 2026: Rule-Based Payments on Solana

Tributary is a non-custodial Solana protocol that lets users approve spending rules once so payments, such as subscriptions or auto-topups, execute without repeated signatures. It is early-stage infrastructure with working mainnet usage but little published on audits or fees.

Our verdict on Tributary

6.4/10

Tributary suits developers and businesses on Solana who want recurring, usage-based or agent-driven USDC payments without handing custody to a bot. Its main strength is the sign-once, non-custodial pull model with composable rules, backed by reported mainnet activity. The main caveat is that audits, team details and fee rates are not published and usage is still small, so cautious users should check the documentation and start with small limits.

What is Tributary?

Tributary is a payments protocol on Solana built around one idea: money should move according to rules the owner sets once, rather than needing a signature each time. Users delegate token spending authority and install a policy, and payments then execute within those limits.

The homepage frames this as a primitive with three parts: a trigger condition (WHEN), a value transfer (PULL) and a destination (ROUTE). The simplest setup, a scheduled pull to a wallet, works as recurring payments. The project reports more than 4,000 pulls executed on mainnet by six teams, and lists 10+ integrations.

Use cases named include SaaS subscriptions, freelance milestone payments, usage-based billing for AI and API providers, invoices, and budgets for AI agents. Developers can integrate through a TypeScript SDK, React components and a hosted USDC checkout.

The project is early. Adoption numbers are modest, and the homepage does not publish audits, a team or fee rates.

How Tributary works

Most crypto payments are push-based: you hold a balance and sign each transfer. Tributary uses a pull model instead. A user signs once to delegate spending authority over a token and to install a policy that defines what can be taken and when.

The Solana program enforces the policy. A gateway signer can trigger a payment only when the agreed conditions are met, and the program pulls the delegated amount from the user's token account, pays the recipient and splits the fee on-chain in one step. The project says it holds no funds and uses no escrow for this basic config.

A fuller configuration adds a validation gate and a routing step. For example, a Lighthouse assertion can check that a hot wallet's USDC balance is below a threshold. If so, the pull goes through a Meteora DLMM swap before reaching the recipient. If the balance is fine, nothing moves.

7 features

Key features

01

Sign-once delegation

A user signs one transaction that approves token delegation and installs a payment policy. Later payments run without further signatures.

02

Non-custodial pulls

Payments are triggered by a gateway signer within approved limits. Funds stay in the user's token account until a valid pull settles.

03

WHEN, PULL, ROUTE rules

The model is WHEN a condition holds, PULL value, then ROUTE it onward. Triggers include schedules and Lighthouse validation assertions, with price oracle and governance triggers listed as options.

04

Several payment types

Supported claim shapes include subscriptions, milestones, pay-as-you-go usage billing, one-time invoices and up-to-max authorizations for x402-style flows.

05

Composable routing

A composable policy can pull USDC and route it through Meteora DLMM or another allowlisted Solana program before settling, such as an automatic hot-wallet topup.

06

Developer tooling

A TypeScript SDK, React components, hosted checkout for accepting USDC and a business onboarding form are listed for developers.

07

AI agent skill

The project offers an installable skill so AI agents can use Tributary budgets without receiving full wallet access.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Non-custodial design: funds stay in the user's token account and are pulled only within approved limits
  • One signature sets up ongoing payments, which suits subscriptions and usage billing
  • Rules can include validation checks and routing through allowlisted Solana programs
  • Fee split is enforced on-chain and described in the homepage's example code
  • Developer tooling is available: SDK on npm, React components, hosted checkout
  • Real mainnet activity is reported, with 4,000+ pulls executed

Watch out for

  • No audit report, team details or security disclosures appear on the homepage
  • Fee levels are set by each gateway and no figures are published, so total cost is unclear
  • Usage is still small: 4,000+ pulls and six teams on the minimal config, per the project
  • Delegated spending authority carries risk if policy limits are set too loosely or a gateway misbehaves
  • Solana-only, and the more advanced routing depends on allowlisted programs and third-party integrations such as Meteora and Lighthouse
  • The name is shared with unrelated projects, which can make research and token lookups confusing

Tributary fees

Tributary's homepage describes the fee structure but not the numbers. Each payment carries one gateway-set fee, calculated in basis points of the amount. That fee is split on-chain between the protocol, which receives a 20% share, a scheduler and the gateway.

The actual gateway fee rates are not published on the homepage. Users would also pay normal Solana network fees, and swap routes would add the costs of the venue used. Check the documentation or the gateway you use for current rates.

Is Tributary safe?

Tributary says it is non-custodial and never holds user funds, with payment rules enforced by the Solana blockchain. That reduces counterparty risk compared with a custodial bot, but it does not remove smart-contract risk or the risk of approving overly broad delegation.

The homepage does not mention an audit, bug bounty, team identities or past incidents. Treat it as unaudited until a report is found in the documentation. Users should set tight amounts and intervals, review each policy before signing, and revoke delegations they no longer need.

6 steps

How to get started with Tributary

  1. 1

Read the documentation on the project's site to understand policy types and limits.

  2. 2

Connect a Solana wallet in the app and review the payment policy you are asked to approve.

  3. 3

Check the delegated token, the maximum amount, the interval and the recipient before signing.

  4. 4

Sign the single transaction that approves delegation and installs the policy.

  5. 5

Monitor executed payments and pause or revoke the policy if your needs change.

  6. 6

Developers can install the SDK from npm, use the React components or hosted checkout, and submit the business onboarding form.

Who Tributary is for

Tributary is aimed at Solana developers, SaaS and API businesses, DAOs and teams building AI agents that need to pay or get paid on a schedule or by usage. It also suits users of those services who prefer to set spending limits once instead of signing every charge. People who want a simple consumer wallet feature or a protocol with a long audited track record may find it too early.

Tributary FAQs

What is Tributary?

Tributary is a rule-based payment primitive on Solana. A user delegates token spending authority once and installs a policy, and payments then run automatically within the limits of that policy. The project describes it as non-custodial and permissionless.

Is Tributary custodial?

No. The project says it never holds user funds and that delegation does not require locking money in escrow. Tokens stay in the user's own token account and are pulled only within approved limits when a policy's conditions are met.

What can I do with Tributary?

The homepage lists subscriptions, milestone payments of up to four phases, usage-based billing for AI and API services, one-time invoices, and an up-to-max payment type aimed at x402 and HTTP 402 flows. A composable policy can also gate a pull with a balance check and route funds through a swap.

How much does Tributary cost?

A gateway sets one fee per payment. It is split on-chain between the protocol, which takes a 20% share of the fee, a scheduler and the gateway. The homepage does not publish the actual fee percentages, so check the documentation or the specific gateway.

Has Tributary been audited?

The homepage does not mention an audit or publish a team. The code is on-chain and an SDK is on npm, but readers should look for audit reports in the documentation before committing meaningful funds.

Does Tributary have a token?

The homepage does not name a Tributary token for this Solana protocol. Other projects use the Tributary name, including a token on a different chain, and the project does not link them to this protocol, so verify the source before buying anything.
