Our verdict on Polkamarkets
6.2/10Polkamarkets suits users who want on-chain prediction markets and teams that want an open-source toolkit for running their own. Its strengths are multi-chain reach, public metrics and linked audits for V1 and V2. The main caveats are the small TVL on DefiLlama, unpublished fees, restricted jurisdictions and no named V3 audit. Check local legality and read the docs before trading.

What is Polkamarkets?
Polkamarkets is a prediction market protocol built for cross-chain information exchange and trading. Users take positions on the outcomes of real-world events on EVM-compatible blockchains. DefiLlama lists it under Prediction Market and has tracked it since December 2021.
The homepage reports 742,584 users, 27,574 questions created, 13.9 million predictions and €146.7M in total volume across its V1, V2 and V3 protocols. These are self-reported figures. Separately, DefiLlama shows TVL of about $13,298, so the value locked in the contracts it tracks is small compared with the volume claimed.
The project is run by Polkamarkets Labs, and the site pitches two uses: a public trading platform and a white-label toolkit for companies and communities that want their own forecasting markets. A news post on the site says the POLK token is moving fully on-chain.
How Polkamarkets works
A prediction market asks a question about a future event, such as an election result. Traders buy shares in the outcomes they think will happen, and share prices act as the crowd's estimate of each outcome's probability. When the event resolves, shares in the correct outcome pay out and the others lose value.
Polkamarkets runs this logic as smart contracts on EVM-compatible blockchains. Users connect a wallet, take positions on questions, and the protocol records trades on-chain. The homepage shows three protocol generations, V1, V2 and V3, with open metrics for all of them.
Beyond its own web app, the project offers a toolkit of protocol, web app, SDK and API so that businesses or communities can run their own markets on any EVM chain. The details of how markets resolve and how liquidity is provided are not covered publicly here, so check the docs.

Pros and cons
What we like
- Open-source toolkit with protocol, web app, SDK and API for building custom markets
- Live on multiple EVM chains, including Ethereum, Polygon, Gnosis, Celo and Arbitrum
- Audit reports for V1 and V2 are linked on the homepage, and DefiLlama lists two audits
- Open protocol metrics are published on the homepage
- Operating since at least late 2021 according to DefiLlama's listing
Watch out for
- Very low TVL on DefiLlama (about $13,298), which suggests thin liquidity in the pooled markets tracked there
- Fees are not published on the homepage, so trading costs are unclear before you read the docs
- The homepage audit list shows V1 and V2 audits only, with no V3 audit named, even though V3 metrics are shown
- Services and the POLK token are not available in Excluded Jurisdictions, and the homepage does not list them
- Spread across many chains, so liquidity and activity may be fragmented
- Prediction markets can fall under gambling or derivatives rules in some countries, and no license is stated
Polkamarkets fees
Trading fees, market creation fees and any protocol or liquidity-provider fees are not stated publicly reviewed. Users would find them in the developer docs or in the market interface before confirming a trade.
Network gas costs depend on the chain used. Polkamarkets runs on both Ethereum and cheaper networks, so costs can differ a lot between them.
Is Polkamarkets safe?
The homepage links security audits for V1 and V2 of the protocol, and DefiLlama lists two audits. The audit list shown does not name a V3 audit, so readers using newer versions should check the docs for coverage. Trades are made from your own wallet, so you carry smart-contract risk, market-resolution risk and the risk of low liquidity.
The site states that its services and the POLK token are not available in Excluded Jurisdictions. No license or regulator is named publicly. Prediction markets may be treated as gambling or derivatives in some places, so check your local rules. You must be 18 or older, and you should only risk money you can afford to lose. Seek help if betting stops being fun.
6 steps
How to get started with Polkamarkets
- 1
Check that the service is available in your country and that prediction markets are legal there; the site excludes some jurisdictions.
- 2
Read the developer docs and audit reports for the protocol version you plan to use.
- 3
Choose a supported EVM chain and fund a compatible wallet with that chain's gas token and the market's trading currency.
- 4
Browse the featured markets and read each question's resolution terms.
- 5
Start with a small position and confirm the fees and gas cost before you sign.
- 6
If you want your own markets, review the open-source toolkit in the docs.
Who Polkamarkets is for
Polkamarkets is for crypto users comfortable with wallets who want to trade on event outcomes, and for developers, media groups or companies that want to deploy their own prediction markets on an EVM chain. It is a poor fit for anyone in an excluded jurisdiction or who is unsure about the legal status of betting-style products locally.
