ActiveDODO Review 2026: Proactive Market Maker DEX Explained
DODO is a decentralized exchange and on-chain liquidity provider built around a proactive market maker algorithm. It aims for tighter pricing than standard pools, but its 2021 Crowdpool exploit is a reminder of smart-contract risk.

Our verdict on Dodo
6.0/10DODO suits DeFi users who want to understand an alternative to standard AMM pools and are comfortable managing smart-contract risk. Its main strength is the PMM algorithm, which aims for tighter pricing and less slippage near the market price. The main caveat is security history: the 2021 Crowdpool exploit cost about $3.8 million, and audits and fee figures are not published in the material reviewed. Use small amounts first and verify every token contract.

What is Dodo?
DODO is a decentralized finance protocol that acts as an exchange and on-chain liquidity provider. It launched in August 2020 and built its reputation on a proactive market maker (PMM) algorithm, which the team says delivers better prices and less slippage than standard automated market makers.
The project attracted notable backing. Outside reports describe a $600,000 seed round led by Framework Ventures and a further $5 million private round with Three Arrows Capital, Binance Labs and Pantera Capital among the participants. Other investors named include Coinbase Ventures, Galaxy Digital and Alameda Research.
Its native token, DODO, trades at about $0.022 with a market cap near $22 million according to recent price listings. The protocol's history also includes a March 2021 exploit of V2 Crowdpools that cost about $3.8 million. The project's homepage could not be reviewed, so audit status, current chain coverage and fee details are not confirmed here.
How Dodo works
DODO is a decentralized exchange. Users swap tokens directly from their wallets against liquidity pools, with no account or order book run by a company. Liquidity providers supply the tokens in those pools and earn a share of trading activity.
Most DEXs use a constant-product formula, where prices move automatically as the pool balance changes. DODO's proactive market maker (PMM) instead takes in market price data and places liquidity near that price. The price curve is flatter around the market price, which means less slippage for a given trade. Prices adjust to attract arbitrage traders, who rebalance the pool.
The team says this approach reduces slippage, single-asset risk and impermanent loss for liquidity providers. These are design claims that depend on market conditions and implementation. V2 also added Crowdpools, which let a project start trading its token by supplying the token itself rather than pairing it with another asset.
6 features
Key features
01
Proactive market maker
Prices are set by an algorithm that references market prices and concentrates liquidity near them. The aim is lower slippage for traders.
02
On-chain liquidity pools
Liquidity providers deposit assets into pools that traders swap against. The project says the design is meant to limit impermanent loss and single-asset risk.
03
Crowdpool token launches
V2 introduced Crowdpools, which let projects raise or distribute tokens by simply supplying their own tokens. This is the feature targeted in the 2021 exploit.
04
IDO-style offerings
One source describes DODO as offering an IDO-style service for new tokens, aimed at projects preparing to list.
05
Native DODO token
DODO is the protocol's token, used in community incentive programs such as liquidity rewards and airdrops according to one outside source.
06
Multi-chain reach
The protocol started on Ethereum and announced a move onto Binance Smart Chain in 2021. It has since been described as supporting trading across several networks.
Pros and cons
What we like
- The PMM algorithm is a distinct pricing design aimed at lower slippage and reduced impermanent loss.
- Backed by well-known crypto investors, according to outside reports.
- Permissionless token launches via Crowdpools and IDO-style offerings serve new projects.
- Non-custodial: traders keep their assets in their own wallets.
- Has operated since 2020, a long track record for a DeFi protocol.
- Reportedly responded to the 2021 incident by pausing pool creation and working with a security partner to recover funds.
Watch out for
- A March 2021 exploit of V2 Crowdpools drained about $3.8 million, showing that newer pool types carry smart-contract risk.
- Audit reports, current insurance cover and team details are not published in the material reviewed.
- Fee levels are not stated, and claims of very low fees come from a single outside write-up.
- The PMM algorithm is less familiar than standard AMM pricing, so liquidity providers need to learn its mechanics first.
- Permissionless token launches and pool creation can list low-quality or counterfeit tokens, so users must check each asset carefully.
- The DODO token trades at a small market cap of roughly $22 million, which can mean thin liquidity and sharp price swings.
Dodo fees
DODO does not publish a fee schedule in the material reviewed. One outside write-up says the PMM design keeps transaction fees very low, but that is a single-source claim and no figures are given.
On any DEX you pay a swap fee set by the pool, plus network gas fees on the chain you use. Fee details for a specific pool appear in the trading interface before you confirm a swap, so check them there.
Is Dodo safe?
DODO is non-custodial, so users keep control of their keys, but they take on smart-contract risk. In March 2021, an attacker exploited a bug in the V2 Crowdpool contract, created a counterfeit DODO token and drained several pools including WSZO, WCRES, ETHA and FUSI, for a total of about $3.8 million. V1 pools and non-Crowdpool V2 pools were reported unaffected, and the team temporarily disabled pool creation. DODO said it expected about $1.88 million of the funds to be returned.
The material reviewed does not name audits, bug bounties or insurance, and the team's details are not published there. Check the project's own documentation for current audit reports before depositing meaningful funds. DEX users should also verify token contracts, since permissionless pools can list counterfeit or worthless assets.
6 steps
How to get started with Dodo
- 1
Confirm you are on the official DODO interface by checking the address from the project's verified social accounts, since similar names exist.
- 2
Set up a self-custody wallet and fund it with the native gas token of the chain you plan to use.
- 3
Connect the wallet and select the tokens you want to swap, then review the quoted price, slippage and fees.
- 4
Verify the contract address of any unfamiliar token before trading, especially tokens from newly created pools.
- 5
Start with a small amount to understand pricing and gas costs before committing more.
- 6
If you want to provide liquidity, read how PMM pools work first and only deposit what you can afford to lose.
Who Dodo is for
DODO is for DeFi traders and liquidity providers who want to compare PMM pricing with conventional AMMs, and for token projects that want to start trading by supplying their own tokens. It is less suited to beginners who are not yet comfortable checking token contracts and managing wallet security.
Dodo FAQs
What is DODO?
DODO is a decentralized finance protocol that works as an exchange and on-chain liquidity provider. It uses a proactive market maker (PMM) algorithm instead of the standard constant-product pool design.
What is the PMM algorithm?
The PMM algorithm uses market price references to concentrate liquidity near the current price and adjusts prices to attract arbitrage. The team says this reduces slippage and impermanent loss compared with typical AMMs, but those are project claims rather than guarantees.
Has DODO been hacked?
In March 2021, several V2 Crowdpools were exploited for about $3.8 million after an attacker created a counterfeit DODO token by abusing a contract bug. V1 pools and non-Crowdpool V2 pools were reported safe, and DODO said it expected about $1.88 million of the funds to be returned.
What is the DODO token?
DODO is the protocol's native token. One outside source reports a total supply of 1 billion, with 60% allocated to community incentives and 15% locked for a year. Check current tokenomics with the project before relying on those figures.
Which blockchains does DODO support?
Reports say DODO launched in August 2020 on Ethereum and announced an expansion to Binance Smart Chain in 2021. One source describes it as supporting trading across multiple blockchain networks, but the current list of supported chains is not confirmed here.
Is DODO the same as Dodo Payments?
No. DODO Payments, a payments company, and the unrelated consumer brands with similar names have no connection to the DODO exchange protocol. Make sure you are using the correct project before connecting a wallet.
