Our verdict on Citrea Bridge

6.2/10

Citrea Bridge suits Bitcoin holders who want to use BTC in DeFi on a ZK rollup and are comfortable with an early-stage, trust-minimized design. Its main strength is Clementine, a BitVM-based bridge that aims to reduce custodial reliance while supporting Bitcoin and Ethereum routes. The main caveat is maturity: TVL is small, no audits are listed, a Security Council holds trusted powers and bridging has been paused before. Start small and read the documentation first.

What is Citrea Bridge?

Citrea Bridge is the bridging layer for Citrea, a ZK rollup that presents itself as an application layer for Bitcoin. DefiLlama describes it as a bridge that moves tokens to and from Citrea, and it tracks it on Ethereum and Bitcoin.

Citrea's mainnet is live, and the homepage describes a stack built around cBTC, the ctUSD stablecoin and a set of Bitcoin-focused apps including a DEX, a money market and a privacy wallet. The BitVM-based Clementine bridge issues cBTC, which the project calls the first trust-minimized BTC on a fully programmable platform.

The bridge is young. DefiLlama lists it since February 2026, shows roughly $111,000 in TVL and no audits. The project has also posted that bridging of USDC, USDT and wBTC resumed after a pause.

How Citrea Bridge works

A bridge lets you move value between blockchains. You lock an asset on one chain, and an equivalent token is made available on the other. To go back, you return the token and the original asset is released.

Citrea is a ZK rollup that uses Bitcoin as its security layer. Its Clementine bridge is built on BitVM, which uses an optimistic model: transfers are assumed valid unless someone proves otherwise, and the Bitcoin network can settle disputes. The result is cBTC, a BTC representation on Citrea that is meant to depend less on a single custodian.

The Bridge Hub also handles Ethereum-side routes for assets like USDC, USDT and wBTC. The project's documentation describes a Security Council that safeguards bridge operations, so the system is trust-minimized rather than fully trustless.

6 features

Key features

01

Bitcoin and Ethereum routes

The Bridge Hub supports moving assets in from both Bitcoin and Ethereum, so users are not limited to a single entry route.

02

Clementine BitVM bridge

Clementine is a BitVM-based bridge that mints cBTC against BTC. The Bitcoin network optimistically verifies it, which is meant to reduce reliance on a custodian.

03

cBTC on Citrea

cBTC is described as the first trust-minimized BTC representation on a fully programmable platform. It is used across Citrea applications and in the cBTC Earn Vault.

04

Stablecoin and wBTC bridging

The project says users can bridge USDC, USDT and wBTC in and out of the ecosystem after a pause was lifted.

05

ctUSD stablecoin access

ctUSD is described as a 1:1 fiat-backed stablecoin supported by short-term U.S. Treasury bills and cash, giving Bitcoin apps a dollar asset to use.

06

Access to the Citrea ecosystem

The bridge feeds a set of Bitcoin-focused apps such as a DEX, money market, yield products and a privacy wallet.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Supports routes from both Bitcoin and Ethereum
  • Clementine uses BitVM to reduce reliance on a single custodian for BTC
  • Backed by a live mainnet and a growing set of apps using cBTC
  • Publishes a Security Council page and a Clementine whitepaper for scrutiny
  • Citrea has named individual backers, including well-known crypto figures

Watch out for

  • The Security Council is described as a trusted group, so some trust in a human body remains alongside the BitVM design
  • DefiLlama lists no audits for the bridge, and the project's pages do not name any here
  • TVL is small, about $111,000, which suggests limited liquidity and a short track record
  • Bridging of USDC, USDT and wBTC was paused and later resumed, which shows operational risk
  • BitVM-based bridges are a newer design with less production history than older bridge models
  • Fees and bridge times are not published in the material reviewed

Citrea Bridge fees

The bridge fee schedule is not published in the material reviewed. Users should expect to pay network fees on the source chain, whether Bitcoin or Ethereum, and the amount varies with congestion.

The Bridge Hub shows the quoted cost and expected timing before a transfer is confirmed. Check those figures first, particularly for Bitcoin-side transfers, which can be slower and costlier than Ethereum ones.

Is Citrea Bridge safe?

DefiLlama lists no audits for the bridge. The project publishes a Clementine whitepaper and documentation on its Security Council, which it describes as a trusted group safeguarding bridging and vault operations. That means the bridge is trust-minimized, not free of trust.

BitVM bridges are a newer approach, so the code and design have less real-world history than older bridges. The earlier pause in USDC, USDT and wBTC bridging is a reminder that operations can be interrupted. Bridge funds carry smart-contract and operational risk, so size transfers accordingly and use only the official site.

6 steps

How to get started with Citrea Bridge

  1. 1

Read the Citrea documentation on the Bridge Hub and the Clementine bridge, including the Security Council page.

  2. 2

Decide the route: from Bitcoin to receive cBTC, or from Ethereum using supported assets such as USDC, USDT or wBTC.

  3. 3

Set up a wallet that supports Citrea and the source network, and confirm you are on the official site.

  4. 4

Start with a small test transfer and review the quoted fees and timing.

  5. 5

Confirm the transfer and wait for the funds to appear on the destination chain.

  6. 6

Check the project's official channels for any pause notices before bridging larger amounts.

Who Citrea Bridge is for

It is for Bitcoin holders and DeFi users who want to put BTC or stablecoins to work on Citrea and accept the risks of a new bridge design. It is less suited to anyone who needs deep liquidity, a long audit history or a fully trustless setup.

Citrea Bridge FAQs

What is Citrea Bridge?

Citrea Bridge lets users move tokens to and from Citrea, a ZK rollup positioned as a Bitcoin application layer. A Bridge Hub supports bridging from both Bitcoin and Ethereum, and the Clementine bridge issues cBTC against BTC.

What is the Clementine bridge?

Clementine is Citrea's BitVM-based bridge. It is described as trust-minimized, with the Bitcoin network optimistically verifying it. It is the system behind cBTC, Citrea's BTC representation.

Is Citrea Bridge trustless?

The project describes it as trust-minimized, not trustless. Its documentation also describes a Security Council, a trusted group that safeguards Citrea and Clementine operations. DefiLlama lists no audits, so users should read the project's own security documentation before moving funds.

Which assets can be bridged?

Citrea has posted that bridging USDC, USDT and wBTC in and out of the ecosystem resumed after a pause. The material reviewed does not explain the pause, so check the project's official channels for current status.

How much does it cost to bridge?

The bridge fee schedule is not published in the material reviewed. Users also pay network fees on Bitcoin or Ethereum, and those depend on congestion. Check the app's quote before confirming a transfer.

Does Citrea Bridge have a token?

Citrea has a token called CTR, but the bridge itself has no separate token. DefiLlama lists no token for the bridge listing.
