Proton, now usually branded XPR Network, is a smart contract blockchain that grew out of the Antelope (formerly EOSIO) family of technology. It uses a delegated proof-of-stake model, where a limited set of elected validators produce blocks, with the aim of fast confirmation and a smooth experience for ordinary users. It is not EVM-compatible. Contracts run on WebAssembly, so you use XPR-specific wallets instead of Ethereum wallets.
The native token is XPR. It is used for staking and network participation, and it is the base asset in many trading pairs on the chain. The network is known for a low-friction fee experience for users. For example, MetalX Swap is described as a zero-gas swap tool. We have no network-wide TVL figure for the chain, so check each app's own numbers and fee terms before you transact.
The native ecosystem is small and centers on the Metal X suite. MetalX Lending is the largest app on our list, with about $33.5M in TVL at the time of writing. MetalX Dex and MetalX Swap handle trading and liquidity pools. Alcor Exchange, which also supports WAX, Telos and Vaulta, offers order books and pools, and SimpleDEX is a newer, much smaller exchange. Bitget and Gate US are on the page as multi-chain centralized exchanges, not native XPR protocols. Liquidity on the smaller apps is thin, so check pool sizes before trading.

Proton FAQs
Is Proton the same as XPR Network?
Proton is the blockchain now commonly called XPR Network, and its native token is XPR. The older Proton name still shows up in wallets, explorers and search results, so both names refer to the same network.
Is Proton the blockchain related to Proton Mail or Proton Wallet?
No. The Proton blockchain is a separate project from Proton, the privacy company behind email and VPN products. The company did launch a self-custody Bitcoin wallet called Proton Wallet in 2024, which is unrelated to the XPR chain. Check that you are looking at the XPR Network when researching this chain.
Is Proton compatible with Ethereum and the EVM?
No, it is not EVM-based. It follows the Antelope-style design with WebAssembly smart contracts, so Ethereum wallets like MetaMask do not work directly on it. You use wallets built for XPR Network instead.
Which dApps are the biggest on Proton?
Based on our listings, the main ones are MetalX Lending, MetalX Swap, MetalX Dex, Alcor Exchange and SimpleDEX. MetalX Lending had about $33.5M in TVL at the time of writing, the largest of the native apps on our list. Bitget and Gate US also appear on this page, but they are centralized exchanges that cover many chains.
Can you stake XPR?
Yes, XPR can be staked, and a Proton-compatible wallet is the usual route. Rewards, lock-up rules and risks can change, so read the current terms in the wallet before committing any funds.
Are transactions on Proton free?
MetalX Swap is described as a zero-gas swap feature, which points to a low-cost experience for users. Fee details can still differ by app, and some actions use network resources. Check each dApp's own interface before you transact.
Do I need KYC to use Proton dApps?
Alcor Exchange is described as non-custodial and no-KYC, but that applies to the app, not to every service you might use. Centralized exchanges like Bitget and Gate US apply their own identity checks. Follow the rules in your country, and only use platforms that are legal where you live.
What is the largest dApp on Proton by TVL?
Bitget is the largest dApp on Proton by total value locked, with $5.82B across all the chains it supports. It is followed by Gate US ($54.0M) and MetalX Lending ($31.0M). TVL figures come from DefiLlama and change daily.
