What TrueUSD is
TrueUSD (TUSD) is a fiat-backed stablecoin designed to track the US dollar at a 1:1 ratio. One token is meant to be redeemable for one dollar held in reserve, so its price should stay close to $1. At the time of writing, as of 2026-11-05, it trades at about $0.9992.
The project launched in March 2018 and has long marketed itself on transparency. Its description highlights attestations of the reserves by an independent accounting firm, and it says it added a Chainlink Proof of Reserve check that is meant to gate new minting. Those claims come from the project's own materials, so readers should treat them as the issuer's description and verify current attestation data themselves.
TUSD is a centralized stablecoin. A company issues and redeems tokens, holds the underlying assets, and can control minting. This differs from algorithmic or crypto-collateralized designs, where code or on-chain collateral does most of the work. The data also lists it under a US dollar stablecoin category and shows it is part of a16z's portfolio category, which reflects early venture backing rather than any guarantee of safety.
What the token is used for
TUSD's main job is to be a stable unit of account that moves on blockchains. Public descriptions point to a handful of common uses:
- Trading: Traders park value in a dollar-pegged token between trades or use it as a pairing against other assets on exchanges.
- Transfers and payments: Sending dollars as tokens across supported chains, often faster and at lower cost than traditional rails.
- DeFi: Some lending, swapping and collateral systems accept stablecoins like TUSD, though acceptance varies by platform and changes over time.
The project's description also notes that Dominica granted TUSD statutory status as an authorized digital currency and medium of exchange, effective October 7, 2022. That is a niche legal recognition in one Caribbean country and does not make TUSD legal tender elsewhere.
TUSD does not give holders governance rights, staking rewards or a share of fees by design. It is a payment and settlement instrument, not an investment product. Any yield someone earns while holding it comes from a third-party platform's own terms, which carry their own risks.
Supply and tokenomics
TUSD has no fixed maximum supply. Instead, supply expands and contracts with demand. When approved users deposit dollars with the issuer or its partners, new tokens are minted. When tokens are redeemed, they are burned and dollars are returned.
As of 2026-11-05, the data shows about 494.5 million TUSD in circulation, and that equals the total supply. The market capitalization is about $494.1M, which ranks it around 106th among crypto assets. Because the token tracks $1, its fully diluted value is effectively the same as its market cap. Reported 24-hour trading volume was about $12.1M.
There is no inflation schedule, token emission, team allocation or vesting in the usual sense. The relevant questions for a stablecoin are different: how large the reserves are, what they consist of, who holds them, and how quickly redemptions can happen. The 1:1 backing and the 100% collateral claim are the core of the design, so the quality and verification of those reserves matter far more than any supply curve.
Recent price swings have been tiny, with the 7-day change around 0.05% and the 1-year change around 0.06%, consistent with a stable asset that has held near its peg lately.
Chains, holding and trading
TUSD was first issued on Ethereum as an ERC-20 token. The data lists it as issued on Ethereum, Tron, Avalanche and BNB Chain, and the project's own description says it is live on about a dozen public chains, including Fantom and Polygon. Availability on a given chain, and how liquid it is there, can change, so check the current contract details before using a network.
In general terms, people hold TUSD in a self-custody wallet that supports the relevant chain, or in an account at an exchange or custodian. Moving it between chains typically requires a bridge or a deposit and withdrawal through an exchange. Each method adds fees and risks, and sending tokens to an address on the wrong network can mean permanent loss.
TUSD has been listed on many trading platforms, with Binance and Huobi named in the project's description. Listings and trading pairs can be added or removed, and liquidity varies by venue. Compared with the largest stablecoins, TUSD's daily volume is modest, so large trades may see more slippage on thinner markets.
History and notable events
TrueUSD launched on 2018-03-05. Its all-time high in the data is about $1.62 on 2018-08-26, a spike far from the peg that likely reflected thin early liquidity rather than a meaningful value. Its all-time low is about $0.8836 on 2020-03-12, during the market turmoil of that month, showing that even dollar-backed coins can briefly lose their peg under stress.
Since then, the project has stressed daily or real-time attestations and has added Chainlink Proof of Reserve. Its 2022 Dominica status is another milestone it highlights.
Ownership and operation of the token have changed over the years, and the issuer's arrangements for holding reserves have drawn public discussion at various times. Because those details have shifted and are best confirmed from current primary sources, this page does not try to summarize them. Anyone relying on TUSD should read the latest attestation reports, the issuer's terms and any recent news about custody and redemption, rather than relying on older articles.
Risks to understand
A stablecoin is only as sound as what stands behind it. The main risks for TUSD include:
- Reserve and custodian risk: The 1:1 backing depends on assets held by third parties. If reserves are lost, frozen or misreported, the token could trade below $1 or become hard to redeem.
- Attestation limits: An attestation confirms balances at a point in time. It is not the same as a full audit and does not remove counterparty risk.
- Centralization: The issuer can mint, and may be able to freeze or block addresses to comply with legal requests.
- Depeg risk: The 2020 low near $0.88 shows the price can fall away from $1 in stressed markets.
- Liquidity risk: With volume far below the biggest stablecoins, exiting a large position quickly may cost more.
- Redemption access: Direct redemption with the issuer typically requires an account and identity checks, so many holders can only sell on the market.
- Smart contract and bridge risk: Moving TUSD across chains adds technical exposure.

How to store it safely
Storage for TUSD works like any token on its host chain. A few habits reduce the chance of loss.
- Pick the right network. Confirm whether your TUSD is on Ethereum, Tron, BNB Chain or Avalanche, and use a wallet address on that same network. Sending to the wrong chain can be unrecoverable.
- Verify the contract. Fake tokens with the same name exist. Check the contract address against the issuer's official published list before interacting.
- Consider a hardware wallet. For larger amounts, a hardware wallet keeps private keys offline. Write the recovery phrase on paper, store it securely, and never share it or type it into a website.
- Test with a small amount. Send a small transfer first when using a new address or chain.
- Beware approvals and scams. Revoke token spending permissions you no longer need, and be wary of unsolicited messages offering support or giveaways.
- Understand exchange custody. Tokens left on an exchange are held by the exchange, so you depend on its solvency and policies.
Keep enough of the native gas token, such as ETH or TRX, to pay network fees when moving TUSD.

TUSD FAQs
Is TrueUSD backed by real dollars?
TUSD is designed to be backed 1:1 by US dollars held in reserve, and the project says its reserves are attested by independent parties. The backing is still a claim that depends on the issuer and its custodians. Check the latest attestation reports and terms before relying on it.
What is the price of TUSD?
TUSD is designed to trade near $1. As of 2026-11-05, it was about $0.9992. Small deviations are normal, and the price has dipped below the peg before, with a low near $0.88 in March 2020.
Which blockchains does TUSD run on?
The data lists TUSD as issued on Ethereum, Tron, Avalanche and BNB Chain, and the project says it is live on around a dozen public chains. Availability can change, so confirm the correct contract address for the network you plan to use.
