What eCash (XEC) is

eCash (XEC) is the native coin of its own Layer-1 blockchain, which grew out of the Bitcoin codebase. The project describes it as digital cash for peer-to-peer payments. The software is developed by Bitcoin ABC, and the project's own account dates its creation to 15 November 2020.

The main technical difference from Bitcoin is the consensus design. eCash keeps proof-of-work mining, but adds the Avalanche protocol on top. The project calls this a Nakamoto/Avalanche hybrid. Avalanche nodes vote on which blocks and transactions to accept, which the developers say allows near-instant finality and lets coin holders earn staking rewards. Ordinary Bitcoin-style chains instead make you wait for several blocks to be confident a payment is final.

The project's published roadmap has three goals: raising throughput from roughly 100 transactions per second to a far higher figure, bringing finality under about three seconds, and shipping upgrades without chain splits. Treat these as stated aims rather than delivered results, and check the current state of each before relying on it.

What XEC is used for

XEC is the unit of account on the network. Its main job is to pay for transactions and to move value between people, in the spirit of the original Bitcoin whitepaper's idea of electronic cash. Because fees on the network are generally very small, the coin is pitched at everyday payments and small transfers, and that is the use the project and most explainers emphasise.

XEC also plays a role in network security. Miners earn it as block rewards, and the Avalanche layer is designed to reward staking nodes with XEC as well. Holding the coin therefore ties you to both the payment use case and the network's security model.

Beyond payments, eCash supports a token layer, commonly called eTokens, where other assets can be issued on the eCash chain and sent with XEC-denominated fees. The Cashtab wallet is the project's own wallet for handling XEC and these tokens.

the public information available do not point to governance voting or other utility beyond payments, security and the token layer, so this page does not claim any.

Supply and tokenomics

XEC has a hard maximum supply of 21 trillion coins. That figure is the Bitcoin cap of 21 million multiplied by one million, which reflects how the coin's units were redenominated when the project rebranded.

As of 2026-11-05, about 20.11 trillion XEC were in circulation, which is roughly 96 percent of the cap. The total supply is almost identical to circulating supply, so there is no large locked or unissued balance waiting to enter the market. Because circulating and maximum supply are so close, the fully diluted value is about the same as the market cap, near $123 million at the time of writing.

New coins arrive through mining block rewards, which are scheduled to fall over time in a Bitcoin-like pattern. The project has also used a mechanism that directs a portion of block rewards to fund development, and the exact share and rules have changed over time, so check the current rules before depending on a specific figure.

The unit price is tiny, about $0.00000613 as of 2026-11-05, because supply is measured in trillions. A low unit price says nothing about whether the coin is cheap or expensive. Market cap is the better yardstick.

Chains, holding and trading

XEC lives on its own native chain rather than being issued on another network, so you do not choose between multiple chains to hold it. Its address format differs from Bitcoin's, and sending XEC to an address on a different network can lose the funds, so always confirm the network before a transfer.

You can hold XEC in the Cashtab wallet, in other wallets that support the eCash chain, or on an exchange account. Self-custody means you control the keys. Exchange custody is simpler but means the platform holds the coins for you.

Trading is mostly through centralised exchanges, where XEC trades against dollars and major coins. As of 2026-11-05, 24-hour trading volume was about $3.0 million, and the coin ranked around 233 by market cap. That is modest liquidity, so large orders can move the price and spreads can widen on smaller venues.

Availability varies by country and platform, and some exchanges list or delist coins with short notice. Check that your chosen exchange supports deposits and withdrawals on the native eCash network before sending.

History and notable events

eCash traces its roots to the Bitcoin Cash family. In November 2020 the Bitcoin ABC team's chain split off during a funding dispute within the Bitcoin Cash community, and that branch was initially known as Bitcoin Cash ABC. In 2021 it was rebranded as eCash with the XEC ticker, and balances were redenominated by a factor of one million, which is why holders ended up with very large coin counts.

The market peak came on 2021-09-04, when the price reached about $0.00038, according to public data. As of 2026-11-05 the price was around 98 percent below that high, and about 52 percent lower than a year earlier. The recorded all-time low of about $0.00000479 came on 2026-07-01, so the price is only modestly above its lowest point.

The network has continued to ship upgrades, including the Avalanche-based features the project promotes. Recent news coverage mentions a planned protocol upgrade, but the details should be verified in the project's own release notes rather than secondary summaries.

Risks to understand

The first risk is price. XEC has fallen sharply from its 2021 high and was down by about a half over the year to 2026-11-05, with a decline of roughly 5.6 percent over the previous week. Small-cap coins like this can swing widely, and nothing here is a forecast or a suggestion to buy or sell.

The second is competition and adoption. Many networks target cheap payments, and several Bitcoin forks make similar claims. The roadmap's throughput and finality goals are ambitions, and a payment coin is only useful if merchants and users actually adopt it.

There is also technical and governance risk. The hybrid consensus design is less widely tested than plain proof-of-work, and a smaller proof-of-work chain can be more exposed to attacks than a larger one. Development depends heavily on a small group of teams and on the funding arrangements that support them.

Finally, liquidity is limited, and some exchanges may restrict or remove listings. Marketing material for the coin often uses promotional language, so rely on the project's technical documentation and your own checks.

Storing XEC safely

Your coins are only as safe as your keys. If you use a self-custody wallet such as Cashtab, write down the recovery phrase on paper, store it offline in more than one secure place, and never type it into a website or share it with anyone claiming to be support.

For larger balances, consider a hardware wallet that supports eCash, or confirm before buying one that it does. Send a small test transaction first when moving funds to a new address, and double-check that the address format matches the eCash network.

If you leave coins on an exchange, enable two-factor authentication, use a unique password, and withdraw anything you do not plan to trade. Exchanges can freeze accounts, suffer hacks or change listings.

Be wary of unsolicited messages, fake wallet apps and giveaway scams that use the eCash name. Download wallets only from the project's official channels, and keep your devices updated. No wallet can recover funds sent to the wrong address or lost to a leaked recovery phrase.

By the numbers

XEC FAQs

What is eCash (XEC)?

eCash is a Layer-1 blockchain built from Bitcoin's codebase, developed by Bitcoin ABC and aimed at everyday payments. It uses proof-of-work mining combined with the Avalanche consensus protocol for fast finality and staking rewards.

What is XEC used for?

XEC is mainly used to pay fees and send value on the eCash network, and miners and staking nodes earn it as rewards. It also underpins a token layer where other assets can be issued on the same chain.

How many XEC coins exist?

The maximum supply is 21 trillion XEC. As of 2026-11-05, about 20.11 trillion were in circulation, roughly 96 percent of the cap, so little new supply remains to be issued.

Why is the XEC price so low?

Prices in the data show a very large decline from the 2021 high of about $0.00038 to roughly $0.00000613 as of 2026-11-05. The huge coin supply means the unit price is tiny, so market cap is a better measure, and nothing here predicts future prices.

Is XEC a token on another blockchain?

No. XEC runs on its own native chain, and it does not need another network to function. Check the network when depositing or withdrawing, because sending it to an incompatible address can lose the funds.

Where can I store XEC?

You can keep XEC in the Cashtab wallet or another wallet that supports the eCash chain, or leave it on an exchange. Self-custody gives you control of the keys, but you must protect the recovery phrase yourself.

What is the market cap of eCash?

As of Nov 6, 2026, eCash had a market cap of about $119M, ranking #236 among cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. Market cap is price multiplied by circulating supply, so it moves with the price.

What is the all-time high of XEC?

eCash's all-time high is $0.0003800, reached on Sep 4, 2021. Its all-time low is $0.000004790 (Jul 1, 2026). Past prices say nothing about future returns.

What is the circulating supply of XEC?

As of Nov 6, 2026, about 20.11T XEC were in circulation, against a maximum supply of 21T.
