What Dogecoin is
Dogecoin (DOGE) is an open-source cryptocurrency that began in 2013 as a joke about Bitcoin-style hype. It takes its name and logo from the "Doge" meme, a Shiba Inu dog. Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer created it, and it has its own blockchain, so DOGE is the native coin of the Dogecoin network rather than a token issued on another chain.
Technically it is a fork of Luckycoin, which was itself a fork of Litecoin. It uses proof of work with the Scrypt hashing algorithm, and blocks arrive about every 60 seconds. Miners secure the network and earn newly issued DOGE plus transaction fees.
There was no public sale and no venture capital round. There is no company behind it. Development and upkeep come from a loose group of volunteer contributors, with support from the non-profit Dogecoin Foundation. At the time of writing, in November 2026, DOGE ranks about 13th by market capitalization, which makes it one of the largest meme-themed assets, though its design is closer to a simple payment coin than to a smart contract platform.
What DOGE is used for
The project describes DOGE as a peer-to-peer currency for fast payments and digital tipping. Its fees are low and its blocks are quick, which suits small transfers. The coin first spread through online communities that used it to tip each other for posts, and it later became known for charity drives and crowdfunding stunts by its community.
In practice, most DOGE today is held and traded rather than spent. Some merchants and online services accept it for payments, but acceptance is patchy and varies by country and platform. Tipping and small peer-to-peer transfers are still the most natural uses.
DOGE has no governance function, no staking yield and no built-in role in lending or decentralized finance. It does not grant rights to a company or a revenue share. Its value rests on community interest, liquidity on exchanges and its long track record, not on a utility that creates cash flow. Readers should treat it as a payment-oriented, culture-driven asset and not as a share in a product.
Supply and tokenomics
Dogecoin has no maximum supply. New coins are issued forever, which is a deliberate design choice meant to keep mining rewards going and fees low. The block reward is a fixed 10,000 DOGE per block, so issuance adds a roughly steady number of coins each year rather than halving over time.
As of 2026-11-05, circulating supply was about 156.6 billion DOGE, and the total supply was almost the same. With no cap, the fully diluted value equals the market capitalization, about $11.87 billion at the time of writing. Because the yearly issuance is fixed in coin terms, it makes up a shrinking percentage of the existing supply as the supply grows.
There was no pre-sale, no investor allocation and no team vesting schedule to track. The early distribution came through mining and community giveaways. A coin that keeps issuing without limit means holders do not get scarcity as a built-in feature, so price depends on demand outpacing new supply and general market conditions.
Chains, holding and trading
DOGE lives on its own Scrypt proof-of-work chain. You hold it at a Dogecoin address, and sending it moves coins between addresses on that network. The chain is not an Ethereum-style smart contract platform, so it does not natively run dApps.
Because of this, wrapped or bridged versions of DOGE sometimes appear on other blockchains. These are separate tokens that depend on a bridge or custodian, and they carry extra risk compared with native DOGE. Check which version an exchange or wallet is actually handling before you send anything.
DOGE is widely traded. Most major centralized exchanges list it, usually against the US dollar, stablecoins and Bitcoin. About $558 million of DOGE changed hands in the 24 hours to 2026-11-05, which points to deep liquidity relative to most coins. The price was about $0.0758 on that date. Mining is another way to earn it, and merged mining lets Scrypt miners secure Dogecoin at the same time as Litecoin without splitting their hash power.
History and notable events
Dogecoin launched on 2013-12-08. It was meant as a lighthearted parody of the many altcoins appearing at the time, but its friendly community, tipping culture and low fees gave it staying power. Early on, it was used to sponsor causes and sports efforts through community fundraising.
The price reached its all-time high of about $0.7316 on 2021-05-07, during a wave of retail enthusiasm that included heavy attention from celebrities, most notably Elon Musk. Its all-time low, about $0.0000869, came on 2015-05-05. As of 2026-11-05 the price was down roughly 52% over the previous year and about 2% over the previous week, and well below the 2021 peak.
Merged mining with Litecoin, introduced in the early years, gave Dogecoin a much larger security base. In March 2026, according to the project description supplied here, a joint SEC and CFTC framework classified Dogecoin as a digital commodity. That is a regulatory label for US purposes. It does not make the coin safer to hold or say anything about its future price.
Risks to understand
Price swings are the biggest risk. DOGE has no earnings or fundamental anchor, so social media attention, celebrity comments and general crypto sentiment can move it sharply in either direction. A fall of about half in a year, as seen in the data to November 2026, is within its historical range.
The unlimited supply means ongoing dilution. Development relies on volunteers and a foundation rather than a funded company, so progress can be slow and priorities can shift. As a proof-of-work chain, its security depends on miners continuing to be paid through block rewards and fees.
Other risks include scams that use the Doge name, fake giveaways and look-alike tokens on other chains, and confusion between native DOGE and wrapped versions. Regulation can change, and a favorable classification in one jurisdiction does not apply everywhere. Exchange failures or hacks are a risk for coins kept on platforms. This page is not financial advice and does not predict prices. Only put in money you could afford to lose.
How to store DOGE safely
You have two main options: leave DOGE with an exchange, or hold it yourself. Exchange custody is convenient for trading, but you rely on the platform to stay solvent and secure, and you rely on its login and withdrawal protections. Turn on two-factor authentication and a withdrawal allowlist if the platform offers them.
Self-custody means a wallet where you control the private keys. Hardware wallets that support Dogecoin keep keys offline and are generally considered the safer choice for larger amounts. Software wallets are easier to use but run on devices that can get infected with malware. Write the recovery phrase on paper, store it offline, and never type it into a website or share it with anyone, including anyone claiming to be support.
Before sending a large amount, send a small test transfer and check that the address begins as a Dogecoin address should. Be cautious with unsolicited messages, airdrop claims and links, and confirm the network when you deposit or withdraw. A transfer to the wrong chain or address usually cannot be reversed.
By the numbers
Dogecoin in numbers
Dogecoin (DOGE) is ranked #13 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $11.3B and a price of $0.0723 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($11.3B) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.
The price was down 4.9% over 7 days, down 20.9% over 30 days, down 56.0% over the past year. It trades about 90% below its all-time high of $0.7316, set on May 7, 2021.
About 156.63B DOGE are in circulation. No hard maximum supply is listed, so new tokens can still be issued.
24-hour trading volume was about $789M, or 7.0% of its market cap: moderate turnover.
DOGE is the native token of Doge. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.
DOGE is linked to Dogecoin, which we cover in our Chain rankings. See our Dogecoin page for how the protocol works and how we score it.
