What Balancer and BAL are

Balancer is a decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol built around automated market makers (AMMs), which are systems that price and swap tokens using liquidity pools instead of a traditional order book. Its main design choice is a shared "Vault" contract that holds funds for many pools, so pool designers can focus on pricing logic. The project supports several pool types, including Weighted Pools, Boosted Pools and stableswap pools, and it also works with pool designs developed by outside teams.

BAL is the token associated with the protocol. The project description and third-party guides describe it as the governance token of the Balancer ecosystem. Balancer V3 is the current version of the protocol as listed on this site, and it is described as a decentralized AMM with a flexible vault, customizable pools and dynamic swap fees.

What BAL is used for

According to the data and public reporting, BAL is mainly used for governance. Holders can vote on protocol upgrades and other key decisions, which gives them a say in how the platform is run and secured. Some guides also say liquidity providers can earn BAL as a reward for supplying funds to pools, so the token can be both a voting right and an incentive.

The token's usefulness depends on people wanting to take part in governance and on the protocol continuing to attract users. Because BAL has no fixed cash-flow claim, its value is tied largely to how much interest the community has in the protocol's direction. Readers should check the current governance documentation for the exact voting rules, since these can change over time.

Supply and market data

The data gives a circulating supply of about 69.8 million BAL, a total supply of about 72.4 million and a maximum supply of about 96.2 million. These figures are approximate values as of 2026-11-05. The gap between circulating, total and maximum supply means some tokens are not yet in circulation, so future releases could affect the market.

At the same date, the data lists a price of about $0.12, a market capitalization of about $8.6 million and a fully diluted valuation of about $8.9 million. The token ranked 1349 by market capitalization. Its all-time high was about $74.45 on 2021-05-04, and its all-time low was about $0.086 on 2026-06-26. Over the past year the price fell by about 85 percent. These numbers change constantly, so check a live source before drawing conclusions.

Which chains BAL is on

The data lists BAL as issued on eleven networks: Ethereum, Avalanche, Base, Optimism, Polygon zkEVM, Arbitrum, Heco, xDai, Near, Polygon and Harmony. It does not list a native chain for the token, which means BAL is not the base currency of any one blockchain. Instead, it exists as tokens on several networks.

Multi-chain tokens can be useful, but they also add complexity. Each deployment is a separate token contract, and moving between networks usually requires a bridge or a wrapped version. Readers should confirm which network they are using before they send or receive BAL, because sending tokens to the wrong network can result in loss of funds.

Risks and storage

BAL carries several risks. Its price has been volatile, and the drop over the past year shows how quickly value can fall. Governance tokens often have limited direct demand, so their prices can move sharply with general market sentiment. Smart contract bugs, exploits in pools, and problems with bridges or other integrations are also possible in any DeFi system, and impersonator tokens with the same name are common.

For storage, readers who hold BAL should use a wallet they control, such as a hardware wallet or a well-known self-custody wallet. Keep recovery phrases offline and never share them. Before interacting with any contract, confirm the token address against official project channels. This is general information, not investment advice, and anyone considering buying or holding BAL should only risk money they can afford to lose.

By the numbers

Balancer in numbers

Balancer (BAL) is ranked #1,353 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $8.25M and a price of $0.1182 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($8.56M) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.

The price was down 3.3% over 7 days, down 9.6% over 30 days, down 86.0% over the past year. It trades about 100% below its all-time high of $74.45, set on May 4, 2021.

About 69.83M BAL are in circulation out of a maximum supply of 96.15M (73% issued).

24-hour trading volume was about $281K, or 3.4% of its market cap: moderate turnover.

BAL has token contracts on 11 chains we track, including Ethereum, Avalanche, Base, Optimism. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.

BAL is linked to Balancer V3, which we cover in our DEXes rankings. See our Balancer V3 page for how the protocol works and how we score it.

CoinGecko groups BAL under DEX tokens, Exchange tokens, Yield farming tokens, Governance tokens.
