What Aptos is
Aptos is a Layer 1 blockchain, meaning an independent network with its own validators, ledger and native currency rather than an app built on top of another chain. It uses proof of stake, so the network is secured by participants who lock up APT and take part in validating transactions.
The technical feature most associated with Aptos is its use of the Move programming language and the Move virtual machine. Move was designed around digital assets and blockchain use cases, with the aim of making smart contracts easier to write safely. The project describes its goals as security, scalability and performance.
The team behind it includes people who worked on Diem, the blockchain effort originally developed at Facebook, which was later wound down. Aptos took that Move-based technology in a new direction as an independent project.
Because Aptos supports smart contracts, developers can build decentralized applications on it, such as trading venues, lending markets, games and payment tools. Its market data classifies it as a smart contract platform and part of the wider Aptos ecosystem. At the time of writing it ranks around 99th by market capitalization.
What APT is used for
APT is the native token of the Aptos network. The clearest, best-documented use is paying transaction fees. Anyone who sends a transfer or interacts with a smart contract on Aptos pays a small fee in APT.
A second role is securing the network. Because Aptos runs on proof of stake, APT can be staked to support validators, and stakers can receive rewards for helping keep the chain running. Staking also ties the token's value to the network's security, since validators have something at stake.
Public explainers also say APT is used to reward developers who build applications or services on the network, and that ecosystem incentives are part of how the project encourages growth.
There is also a burn mechanism. Part of the fees paid in APT is permanently removed from circulation, which works against new issuance. News coverage in mid-2026 described a rising burn rate alongside higher network activity. How much this offsets new supply depends on usage, so it is worth checking current figures rather than assuming a fixed effect.
APT is not a stablecoin and does not represent a claim on any company. Its value comes from demand for blockspace, staking and speculation.
Supply and tokenomics
The maximum supply of APT is 2.1 billion tokens. As of 2026-11-05, about 884 million were circulating, which is roughly 42% of that maximum. The total supply, which includes tokens that exist but are not yet freely circulating, was about 1.21 billion.
That gap matters for valuation. Market capitalization uses circulating supply and was about $554.3M. Fully diluted valuation, which uses the maximum supply or the projected full count, was about $759.4M. The difference suggests that more tokens are expected to enter circulation over time.
Public information on the distribution says a portion of tokens is set aside for community growth and Aptos Foundation initiatives, with the remainder released monthly over a ten-year period. Early investors and team members typically hold tokens under vesting schedules, but the exact split is not covered in the data used for this page, so check the project's official tokenomics documentation for allocation details.
Two forces work in opposite directions. New tokens released from vesting and staking rewards add supply, while fee burning removes some. The net effect changes with network activity and is not a fixed number.
Chains, holding and trading
APT is the native token of the Aptos chain itself, and the data lists Aptos as the only chain it is issued on. Unlike many tokens that exist as contracts on Ethereum or other networks, APT is the base asset of its own network.
To hold APT, you use a wallet that supports the Aptos network. Wallets can be software apps or browser extensions, or hardware devices paired with a compatible app. Each wallet has an address on Aptos, and the private key or recovery phrase controls the funds.
In terms of trading, APT is listed on many centralized exchanges, where it trades against stablecoins and major cryptocurrencies. Trading volume over 24 hours was about $39.6M at the time of writing, which indicates moderate liquidity for a token of its size. It can also be swapped on decentralized exchanges within the Aptos ecosystem.
Some versions of APT are also bridged to other chains as wrapped tokens. These depend on the bridge's security and are not identical to native APT, so check which version you are receiving before sending funds. Withdrawals from an exchange must use the Aptos network, not another chain.
History and notable events
Aptos was announced with a large funding round. The project's own description says it raised $200 million from investors including a16z, Multicoin and Binance, and market data also lists Coinbase Ventures, Dragonfly Capital and FTX-related holdings among its backers. Binance Labs has since been renamed YZi Labs.
In its early phase the project ran a developer test network, then an incentivized test network, before targeting a mainnet launch. Our data does not give an exact launch date, so refer to the project's own announcements for that detail.
The price reached an all-time high of about $19.92 on 2023-01-26. By 2026-11-05 the price was about $0.63, and the token had fallen roughly 75% over the previous year. Its all-time low of about $0.51 was recorded on 2026-08-30, only a couple of months before that date. It lost about 5.7% over the week ending 2026-11-05.
In mid-2026, news coverage noted that fee burning had reached a quarterly high, pointing to more network usage. That is a data point about activity, not a signal about future price.
Risks to understand
APT is volatile. A drop of around 75% in a year and a price far below its 2023 peak show how large the swings can be. Nobody can say where the price will go, and this page does not offer buy or sell advice.
Supply is a structural risk. With a bit under half of the maximum supply circulating, scheduled releases from vesting could add selling pressure if demand does not keep pace. Concentrated holdings among early investors and insiders are a related concern.
Competition is strong. Many Layer 1 chains target the same developers and users, and several use different technical approaches. Aptos has to keep attracting applications and activity to justify its valuation.
Technical and smart contract risks also apply. Move aims to reduce certain classes of bugs, but contracts can still contain errors, and bridges and third-party apps add their own exposure. Regulation of crypto assets and staking varies by country and can change.
Finally, scams target popular tokens. Fake airdrops, phishing sites and impersonation accounts are common, so verify everything independently.
How to store APT safely
For small amounts, a reputable software wallet that supports Aptos is enough. For larger holdings, many people use a hardware wallet, which keeps the private keys offline and requires physical confirmation of each transaction.
Write your recovery phrase on paper or another offline medium and store it somewhere secure, ideally in more than one location. Never type it into a website, send it in a message or store it as a screenshot or in cloud notes. No legitimate support team will ask for it.
Before sending a large transfer, send a small test amount first and confirm that it arrives. Double-check the address and make sure you are using the Aptos network. Sending to an address on the wrong network can result in a permanent loss.
If you stake APT, read how the lockup and unstaking period works with your chosen provider, and understand the fees involved. Be careful with approvals when connecting to dApps, and revoke permissions you no longer use. Keeping funds on an exchange is convenient for trading, but it means the exchange controls the keys.
By the numbers
