What Algorand and ALGO are
Algorand is a layer 1 blockchain, meaning it is its own base network rather than an app running on another chain. ALGO is its native token. The project describes itself as a scalable, secure and decentralized platform for digital money and smart contracts.
The network reaches agreement using a variation of proof of stake called Pure Proof of Stake. Instead of miners competing with hardware, participants who hold ALGO take part in selecting who proposes and votes on blocks. The selection is random and weighted by the amount of ALGO an account holds, and no one has to lock their coins away for long periods to take part.
Developers can build applications with familiar languages, including Python, and the chain supports tokenized assets as a built-in feature. The project points to payments, digital identity, supply-chain tracking and financial services as target uses. Some of its tokens and projects fall into the real-world asset category, where off-chain items such as bonds or other financial instruments are represented on-chain.
As of 2026-11-05, ALGO ranked around 77th by market capitalization, so it is a mid-sized asset rather than one of the largest networks.
What the token is used for
ALGO has a few practical roles on the network. The most direct one is paying transaction fees. Fees on Algorand are small and fixed in ALGO terms, so every transfer, asset swap or smart contract call needs a little of the token.
Second, ALGO is the staking and consensus asset. Accounts that hold it can take part in securing the chain, and block rewards and incentive programs have been paid in ALGO. The details of those rewards and the governance programs around them have changed over time, so check current network documentation before relying on any description.
Third, ALGO is the base currency for the ecosystem. Accounts must hold a minimum balance of ALGO, and creating or holding other tokens on Algorand requires extra minimum balance. In practice, ALGO is the asset people need to use almost anything on the chain.
It is also the main trading pair for tokens issued on Algorand. Decentralized exchanges such as Tinyman and lending platforms such as Folks Finance use ALGO as a core asset. Wallets such as Pera Wallet let users send, receive and swap assets through built-in integrations.
Supply and tokenomics
ALGO has a hard cap of 10 billion tokens. As of 2026-11-05, about 9.08 billion were circulating, and the total supply figure was only slightly higher at roughly 9.08 billion. Because nearly all of the capped supply is already out, the fully diluted valuation matched the market capitalization in the data, at about $887.9 million.
That means future dilution from new issuance is limited compared with many newer tokens, but it does not mean the supply is static. Rewards paid to participants come from the existing pool of tokens rather than from minting beyond the cap, and the schedule by which tokens reach circulation has been set by the project and its foundation over the years. Large holders, including the foundation and early backers, still matter for how much sells into the market.
I do not have a verified breakdown of allocations, so treat any specific percentage you see elsewhere with caution until checked against official documentation.
At the time of writing, the price was about $0.098, and 24-hour trading volume was around $44.1 million. These figures move constantly and are only a snapshot.
Chains, holding and trading
ALGO lives on its own network, Algorand. It is not an issued token on other chains, so the usual way to hold it is in a wallet that supports the Algorand network natively.
Other tokens on Algorand, such as stablecoins and community tokens, use the chain's built-in asset standard rather than a separate smart contract. To receive one, a wallet normally has to opt in to that asset first, which requires holding a little extra ALGO.
Trading happens in two main places. Centralized exchanges list ALGO against major currencies and stablecoins, and that is where most volume occurs. On-chain, decentralized exchanges on Algorand allow swaps directly from a wallet, and lending protocols let users deposit or borrow ALGO.
Some versions of ALGO may also appear on other networks through bridges or wrapped products. Those are different assets with extra risks, because their value depends on the bridge or custodian. If you are unsure which version you are holding, check the asset details in your wallet before sending anything.
History and notable events
Algorand was founded by Silvio Micali, an MIT professor and Turing Award winner known for his work in cryptography. The network's mainnet went live in 2019, and ALGO's all-time high price of about $3.56 was recorded on 2019-06-20, around the time it first began trading widely.
Since then the price has fallen sharply. As of 2026-11-05, the token was down roughly 35% over the past year, and its all-time low of about $0.0757 was set on 2026-07-29. That puts the current price far below its first-year peak, even though the network has kept operating.
Over the years the project has been associated with enterprise and government pilots, a tokenization focus and changes to how rewards and governance are run through the Algorand Foundation. It is also listed in categories such as proof of stake, real-world assets and quantum-resistant designs, the latter tied to the use of post-quantum signature schemes in parts of its state-proof system.
I am not citing specific partnerships or dates beyond those, since they were not part of the data supplied. Check the official project channels for a full timeline.
Risks to understand
ALGO carries the usual risks of a crypto asset, plus a few specific to its position.
Price risk. The token has lost most of its value since 2019 and was still falling over the past year. Volatility is high, and prices can move far in either direction with no change in the network itself.
Competition. Algorand competes with many other layer 1 networks for developers, users and liquidity. Strong technology does not guarantee adoption, and activity on the chain is modest relative to the largest ecosystems.
Concentration and governance. The foundation and early holders have had influence over distribution, incentives and direction. Changes to rewards or governance rules can affect holders.
Utility versus value. Fees on Algorand are very low, which is good for users but means fee demand alone does not create much need for the token. Its value depends on staking, ecosystem use and market sentiment.
Operational risks. Smart contract bugs in dApps, bridge failures, phishing and scam tokens affect any chain. Opting in to unknown assets can expose wallets to spam or fake tokens.

How to store ALGO safely
The safest general approach is to control your own keys. A self-custody wallet gives you a recovery phrase that is the only way to regain access, so write it down on paper or metal and keep it offline. Never type it into a website, share it in a chat or store it in a screenshot or cloud note. Anyone who asks for it is trying to steal your funds.
For larger amounts, a hardware wallet keeps the signing keys on a separate device. Ledger devices support Algorand, and mobile wallets such as Pera Wallet can work alongside them. Always check the address on the device screen before approving a transaction.
Keep a small amount of ALGO for fees and minimum balances, and remember that each held asset raises the minimum you must keep. Be careful when opting in to unfamiliar tokens, since fake assets with convincing names are common.
If you leave coins on a centralized exchange, you rely on that company's security and solvency. Enable two-factor authentication using an authenticator app, and consider moving long-term holdings off the platform. Send a small test transaction first when moving to a new address.
By the numbers
Algorand in numbers
Algorand (ALGO) is ranked #79 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $850M and a price of $0.0936 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($850M) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.
The price was down 1.4% over 7 days, down 22.1% over 30 days, down 41.4% over the past year. It trades about 97% below its all-time high of $3.56, set on Jun 20, 2019.
About 9.08B ALGO are in circulation out of a maximum supply of 10B (91% issued).
24-hour trading volume was about $43.1M, or 5.1% of its market cap: moderate turnover.
ALGO is the native token of Algorand. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.

ALGO FAQs
What is ALGO used for?
ALGO is the native token of the Algorand blockchain. It pays transaction fees, supports staking and consensus participation, and acts as the base asset that other tokens and dApps on the network depend on.
What is the maximum supply of ALGO?
The maximum supply is 10 billion ALGO. As of 2026-11-05, about 9.08 billion were in circulation, so most of the capped supply is already out in the market.
Is Algorand proof of work or proof of stake?
Algorand uses Pure Proof of Stake. Accounts holding ALGO are randomly selected, weighted by their balance, to propose and vote on blocks. It does not rely on energy-intensive mining.
What was ALGO's all-time high and low?
The price peaked at about $3.56 on 2019-06-20, around the time ALGO began trading widely. Since then it has declined heavily, and its all-time low of about $0.0757 was recorded on 2026-07-29. Past performance does not indicate future results.
Can I hold ALGO in a self-custody wallet?
Yes. Wallets such as Pera Wallet and Ledger hardware devices support Algorand. For other Algorand tokens, a wallet typically needs to opt in to each asset first, which requires a small extra ALGO balance.
Is ALGO a good investment?
Not necessarily. The network and its fixed supply are separate from market price, and ALGO has fallen a lot since 2019. Whether it suits anyone depends on their own research and risk tolerance, and this page does not give buy or sell advice.
What is the market cap of Algorand?
