## What is Kaspa (KAS)?

Kaspa is a proof-of-work network whose native coin is KAS. It uses a BlockDAG design rather than relying on a single chain of blocks: multiple blocks can be produced close together, and the protocol organizes them into a shared history. Kaspa’s consensus protocol, GHOSTDAG, is designed to order blocks while keeping valid competing blocks in the network’s history. The project presents this structure as a way to support faster block production without abandoning proof-of-work.

KAS is the asset used within this network. Kaspa’s stated aims include peer-to-peer payments and serving as infrastructure for crypto and financial markets, but those aims are not a guarantee of adoption or performance. The project also discusses future development around rollups and subnetworks; these are distinct from the base network and should not be assumed to be mature or widely used. Kaspa is not an Ethereum-style token deployed on another chain: KAS is associated with the Kaspa network itself.

## How Kaspa’s BlockDAG works

Kaspa uses proof-of-work, in which miners use computing power to propose blocks and help secure the network. Its GHOSTDAG protocol is intended to handle blocks created at a high rate by ordering them within a directed acyclic graph, or DAG, rather than discarding every block that does not fit a single linear chain. The goal is to allow more blocks to be processed while maintaining a consensus history.

This design differs from Bitcoin’s familiar one-block-at-a-time chain structure, but both use proof-of-work. A faster block-production design does not by itself establish how well a network performs under every condition. Security, decentralization, confirmation experience, and practical throughput depend on factors such as miner participation, network connectivity, software implementation, and real-world use. Kaspa’s documentation also describes features such as DAG topology queries, pruning, and SPV proofs. These are technical components, not a promise that every user or application will benefit from them in the same way.

## What is KAS used for?

KAS is used to pay transaction fees on the Kaspa network and is tied to its proof-of-work security through mining. Users need the coin to send value on the network, including to cover the fee for a transaction. Miners contribute computational work to produce blocks; KAS is part of the network’s mining-based incentive system. The precise economics of mining can change over time and depend on network conditions and costs.

Kaspa is positioned as a payment-focused Layer 1, while its project also describes ambitions for decentralized markets and rollup-based smart contract development. These plans should be distinguished from functionality already available and commonly used. A native coin can enable transfers and fees without making every proposed application or feature operational. Before relying on KAS for a particular purpose, check the current network and wallet support for that use, and confirm that the recipient supports KAS on Kaspa rather than a similarly named asset or a wrapped version on another network.

## Supply and tokenomics

Kaspa’s stated launch was a fair launch in November 2021, with no pre-mine, pre-sale, or coin allocation, according to the project description. KAS is issued through proof-of-work mining rather than through an initial allocation to investors. The maximum supply is about 28.7 billion KAS. As of 2026-11-05, the reported circulating supply was about 27.8 billion, with total supply also close to that amount. These are point-in-time figures and can change as more coins enter circulation.

A fixed maximum supply limits how many KAS can ultimately exist, but scarcity alone does not determine a coin’s value or demand. The circulating amount, mining rewards, fees, and market interest all matter to the token’s economics. The figures above do not imply that the price will rise or that the maximum supply has already been reached. Check current network or market information if exact supply figures matter to a decision, since token data can be updated and displayed differently across services.

## History and notable points

Kaspa’s project description dates its fair launch to November 2021 and characterizes the network as community-managed. Its public technical direction centers on proof-of-work and GHOSTDAG, with additional features described for DAG queries, block-data pruning, and SPV proofs. The project also discusses future support for subnetworks and development of smart contracts through rollups. These plans indicate areas of interest, but do not establish that every feature is complete, widely adopted, or available through the same user experience as established smart-contract platforms.

KAS has experienced large market price swings. For context, the supplied historical record lists an all-time high of about $0.207 on July 31, 2024, and an all-time low of about $0.000171 on May 26, 2022. Historical extremes are not forecasts, and later prices can move sharply in either direction. Kaspa’s development and market history should therefore be assessed separately: technical design and community activity do not guarantee sustained usage, liquidity, or future market performance.

## Holding and trading KAS

People generally obtain KAS through a crypto exchange that supports it or receive it directly from another holder. Availability, trading pairs, fees, and withdrawal support vary by provider and location. When withdrawing KAS, choose the Kaspa network if the service offers multiple network options, and confirm that the destination wallet can receive native KAS. Sending to an incompatible network or address can result in a loss that may be difficult or impossible to reverse.

KAS can be held in a wallet that supports the Kaspa network or left with a custodial exchange, which controls the keys on the customer’s behalf. Self-custody gives the holder control of the keys but also responsibility for protecting them; exchange custody brings provider, account-access, and withdrawal risks. Before transferring a meaningful amount, check the address carefully and consider a small test transaction. Trading KAS involves price volatility and potentially limited liquidity, so order execution may differ from the displayed price. This is general information, not a recommendation to buy or sell.

## Risks and safe storage

KAS carries the general risks of crypto assets: its market price can fall sharply, trading can be thin or volatile, and there is no guarantee that the network will attract lasting users or developers. Proof-of-work networks also depend on miners, software, and communications infrastructure; changes or failures in these areas can affect operation and security. Kaspa’s BlockDAG approach and its development plans may face technical, adoption, or execution challenges. A maximum supply or fair-launch history does not remove these risks.

For self-custody, use a wallet that explicitly supports native KAS, keep its recovery phrase offline in a secure place, and never share the phrase or private keys. Be cautious of unsolicited wallet downloads, fake support accounts, and requests to reveal recovery information. Use a strong, unique password and enable account protections where available. For exchange-held KAS, secure the account and understand the provider’s custody and withdrawal terms. Confirm network and address details before sending, since blockchain transfers are generally difficult to reverse.

By the numbers

Kaspa in numbers

Kaspa (KAS) is ranked #78 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $851M and a price of $0.0306 as of Nov 6, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($851M) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.

The price was down 11.3% over 7 days, down 27.7% over 30 days, down 33.8% over the past year. It trades about 85% below its all-time high of $0.2074, set on Jul 31, 2024.

About 27.79B KAS are in circulation out of a maximum supply of 28.7B (97% issued).

24-hour trading volume was about $13.1M, or 1.5% of its market cap: low turnover, so large orders can move the price.
