Strata Review 2026: Risk-Tranched Yield on Ethena USDe and More

Strata is an on-chain protocol that splits the yield of a strategy such as Ethena's USDe into a lower-risk senior token and a higher-risk junior token. It suits users who want to choose their risk level, but junior holders can lose first.

Our verdict on Strata

6.7/10

Strata suits experienced DeFi users who understand tranched products and want either a protected, benchmark-linked senior position or a leveraged junior position on yield from assets such as Ethena's USDe. Its main strength is a clear structure with documented mechanics, risks and contracts. The main caveat is that junior holders absorb losses first, all positions depend on the underlying strategies and issuers, and the protocol has been live only since October 2025.

What is Strata?

Strata is a generalised risk-tranching protocol. It takes an on-chain or off-chain yield strategy and splits the yield into two tokens, a senior tranche and a junior tranche, each with its own risk and return profile. The aim is to replace a single, one-size-fits-all yield with two options.

The first products went live on 13 October 2025, built on Ethena's USDe. The docs now list further markets: Neutrl NUSD, Midas mHYPER and mM1-USD, Saturn USDat, Hastra PRIME and Plume nOPAL. The team says the design is modular and can be extended to other assets and strategies across ecosystems.

The official site is a documentation hub covering the mechanism, risks and mitigations, security, audits, contract details and roles and permissions. There is also a points programme listed under Rewards.

How Strata works

Strata starts with an underlying yield-bearing asset or strategy, such as Ethena's reward-bearing synthetic dollar, sUSDe. It splits that yield into two tokenised tranches: a Senior Tranche and a Junior Tranche. For USDe, the examples are srUSDe and jrUSDe.

The senior tranche is built for stability. It aims to give a guaranteed minimum yield tied to a benchmark rate, plus uncapped upside to the underlying yield, and it is protected from strategy and collateral risks. The junior tranche provides that protection. It acts as a liquid insurance pool, absorbs excess risk and volatility, and earns a risk premium from the senior side in return.

The docs also describe a Dynamic Yield Split, which sets how yield is shared between the two tranches. Strata calls itself fully on-chain and chain-agnostic, with plans to extend the same structure to lending vaults, multi-strategy vaults, delta-neutral strategies, tokenised private credit and high-yield real-world assets.

Key features

01

Two-tranche structure

Splits one yield source into a senior and a junior token. Each is built for a different risk-reward profile.

02

Senior tranche protection

Offers a guaranteed minimum yield tied to a benchmark rate, with uncapped exposure to the underlying yield and protection against strategy and collateral risks.

03

Junior tranche leverage

Gives leveraged upside to the underlying yield and earns a risk premium from the senior tranche for acting as its insurance pool.

04

Multiple underlying markets

Lists markets built on Ethena USDe, Neutrl NUSD, Midas mHYPER and mM1-USD, Saturn USDat, Hastra PRIME and Plume nOPAL.

05

Dynamic yield split

The docs include a Dynamic Yield Split page describing how yield is divided between the two tranches.

06

Composable tranche tokens

Both tranches are described as liquid and composable tokens, so other on-chain apps can integrate them.

07

Modular design

The architecture is described as modular and chain-agnostic. It is meant to extend to lending vaults, multi-strategy vaults, delta-neutral strategies, private credit and RWAs.

08

Published technical docs

The documentation has dedicated pages for security, audits, contract details, and roles and permissions.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Clear two-tranche design that lets users choose a risk level
  • Senior tranche targets a minimum yield tied to a benchmark rate with uncapped upside
  • Junior tranche offers leveraged upside to the underlying yield
  • Supports several underlying markets, not just Ethena USDe
  • Docs cover risks, audits, contract addresses and permissions
  • Fully on-chain with composable tokens

Watch out for

  • Junior tranche holders absorb losses first, since it works as an insurance pool for the senior tranche
  • Returns depend on the underlying strategies and issuers, such as Ethena, Midas and Plume, so their failures flow through to Strata
  • Launched on 13 October 2025, so the track record is short
  • The protocol does not publish a fee schedule in its introduction pages
  • Supported chains are not listed in the introduction, so users must check the docs before bridging or depositing
  • Includes off-chain and RWA-linked strategies, which add counterparty and legal risk beyond smart contracts

Strata fees

Strata's introduction pages do not publish a fee schedule, so any management, performance or withdrawal fees are not stated here. The docs include a Mechanism Overview, a Dynamic Yield Split page and a Contracts Details page that users should read for how yield is shared and which roles can act.

Beyond protocol charges, users also pay network gas fees for deposits and withdrawals. The yield split itself works as a cost for senior holders, who give up part of the upside to junior holders in exchange for protection.

Is Strata safe?

Strata's docs include dedicated Security, Audits, Contracts Details and Roles and Permissions pages, plus a Risks and Mitigations section. Readers should open the audit reports to check who audited, what was in scope and what was found. The introduction pages do not summarise audit results.

Risk comes in layers: smart-contract risk in Strata, risk in each underlying strategy or issuer, and the structural risk that the junior tranche absorbs losses first. Some markets involve tokenised or off-chain assets, which add counterparty and legal risk. The protocol launched in October 2025, so it has a short operating history. Strata does not state a regulatory licence in the introduction pages. This is not financial advice, and users should only deposit what they can afford to lose.

6 steps

How to get started with Strata

  1. 1

Read the Welcome, Why Strata and Mechanism Overview pages in the official docs.

  2. 2

Pick a market (for example Ethena USDe) and read its page and the Risks and Mitigations section.

  3. 3

Decide whether the senior or junior tranche fits your risk tolerance, remembering that junior takes losses first.

  4. 4

Check the Audits, Security and Contracts Details pages and confirm you are using the official app linked from the docs.

  5. 5

Connect a compatible wallet, deposit the supported asset, and receive the tranche token.

  6. 6

Monitor the position and the underlying strategy, and review the Strata Points Program page if you want to see what rewards are offered.

Who Strata is for

Strata is for DeFi users who already hold or want yield-bearing dollar assets and want to pick their risk. Conservative users may prefer the senior tranche, while risk-tolerant users may take the junior tranche for higher potential yield. It is not suited to beginners who are unfamiliar with synthetic dollars, tokenised assets or smart-contract risk.

Strata FAQs

What is Strata?

Strata is a risk-tranching protocol. It takes a yield strategy, such as Ethena's reward-bearing USDe, and splits it into a senior tranche and a junior tranche. Each tranche is a token with a different risk and return profile.

What is the Strata senior tranche?

The senior tranche is described as an over-collateralised, yield-bearing synthetic dollar. It has a guaranteed minimum yield tied to a benchmark rate, protection against strategy and collateral risks, and uncapped upside to the underlying yield. An example is srUSDe.

What is the Strata junior tranche?

The junior tranche gives leveraged upside to the underlying yield and acts as a liquid insurance pool for the senior tranche. It earns a risk premium from the senior side in return for absorbing excess risk and volatility. An example is jrUSDe.

Which markets does Strata support?

The docs list Ethena USDe, Neutrl NUSD, Midas mHYPER, Midas mM1-USD, Saturn USDat, Hastra PRIME and Plume nOPAL. The first products, built on Ethena's USDe, launched on 13 October 2025.

Is Strata safe?

No yield is guaranteed beyond the stated senior-tranche minimum tied to a benchmark rate, and that depends on the protocol working as designed. Both tranches carry smart-contract, strategy and issuer risk, and the junior tranche is built to take losses first. Read the Risks and Mitigations page before depositing.

Does Strata have a points program?

The docs describe a Strata Points Program under Rewards. The introduction does not state any token details, so check the docs for current terms.
