Our verdict on ShadeX

5.8/10

ShadeX is a niche lending market for users who want privacy-oriented borrowing on Secret Network and are comfortable with the Cosmos ecosystem. Its main strength is the encrypted design, along with long and short exposure through borrowing. The main caveat is the lack of published audits, TVL and fee details, plus its desktop-only app. Treat it as higher risk and size positions accordingly.

What is ShadeX?

ShadeX is the native lending market of Shade Protocol, a group of privacy-preserving DeFi apps on Secret Network. Project posts describe it as an encrypted money market for the Cosmos ecosystem, with a testnet in February 2025 and a launch announced for March 2025.

The Shade app homepage presents the wider suite, including the SILK asset, and currently asks users to visit on desktop. The protocol has its own token, SHD, which was distributed to the community through an airdrop claim process. Project announcements also reference a funding round and an oracle partnership.

The main appeal is privacy-oriented borrowing in the Cosmos corner of DeFi. The main gaps are the lack of listed audits, no reported TVL and no published fee details.

How ShadeX works

ShadeX works like other on-chain money markets. Users deposit assets into a pool, which earns interest paid by borrowers. Borrowers lock collateral and take out loans, and if the value of their collateral falls too far, it can be liquidated to repay lenders. Price oracles supply the values used for these checks.

What sets ShadeX apart is its base layer. Secret Network supports encrypted smart contracts, so the project positions ShadeX as an encrypted market where position data is not exposed as it would be on a fully transparent chain. The exact privacy guarantees are described by the project and are not detailed in the material reviewed.

The project's tutorials also show how users can borrow an asset, swap it and effectively go long or short on ATOM. This amplifies both gains and losses, so it suits experienced users.

6 features

Key features

01

Encrypted money market

ShadeX is billed as an encrypted money market, using Secret Network's privacy features to keep lending and borrowing activity less visible than on transparent chains.

02

Lending and borrowing

Users can supply assets and borrow against collateral, the basic loop of an on-chain lending protocol.

03

Long and short positions

Project tutorials describe going long or short on ATOM by borrowing and swapping, with price data supplied by an oracle partner.

04

Oracle price feeds

Shade announced a partnership with an oracle provider, SupraOracles, to supply price data, which lending markets rely on for collateral valuation.

05

Shade ecosystem links

ShadeX sits alongside other Shade apps on Secret Network, including the SILK asset, and Shade has announced omnichain expansion for SILK.

06

Launch incentives

The project ran an incentivized public testnet before launch and promoted high borrowing APYs at launch to attract early users.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Privacy-focused design built on Secret Network's encrypted smart contracts.
  • Covers the core lending features: supply, borrow and leveraged long or short exposure.
  • Part of a broader ecosystem of connected Shade apps, including SILK.
  • Has an oracle partnership for price data, which matters for lending safety.
  • Went through an incentivized public testnet before launching.

Watch out for

  • No audits are listed for the protocol, so smart-contract risk is not independently documented here.
  • TVL is not reported, so there is no clear measure of how much capital uses the market.
  • Borrowing and lending rates, fees and liquidation parameters are not published on the homepage.
  • It runs only on Secret Network, which has a smaller user base and liquidity than the largest lending chains.
  • The app is desktop-only for now, with mobile support described as coming soon.
  • Launch-period APY figures were promotional and may not reflect current rates.

ShadeX fees

ShadeX does not publish a fee schedule on its app homepage. Borrow and supply rates, any protocol or liquidation fees, and collateral parameters would be shown inside the app or in the project's documentation.

At launch, the project promoted borrowing incentives, with advertised APYs above 350% for borrowing USDC, above 215% for BTC and above 200% for ATOM. These were promotional figures and are unlikely to be permanent. Users also pay normal Secret Network transaction fees.

Is ShadeX safe?

No audits are listed for ShadeX in the data reviewed, and the project does not publish audit reports on its app homepage. Lending protocols carry smart-contract, oracle and liquidation risk, and a protocol on a smaller chain adds liquidity risk. Check the project's documentation for audit reports and parameters before depositing.

Users keep custody through their own wallets, but funds sit in smart contracts while supplied or used as collateral. Encrypted markets may also be harder for outsiders to verify, so independent review matters. The project does not publish regulatory or licensing information. Leveraged positions can be liquidated quickly, so use only funds you can afford to lose.

6 steps

How to get started with ShadeX

  1. 1

Check that DeFi lending is permitted where you live and understand the risks of leverage and liquidation.

  2. 2

Set up a wallet that supports Secret Network and keep a small amount of the native token for gas.

  3. 3

Open the Shade app on a desktop browser, since mobile is not yet supported.

  4. 4

Connect your wallet and review the available markets, rates and collateral requirements.

  5. 5

Read the project's documentation and tutorials, especially for borrowing and long or short positions.

  6. 6

Start with a small deposit and monitor your collateral ratio to avoid liquidation.

Who ShadeX is for

ShadeX suits experienced DeFi users in the Cosmos and Secret Network ecosystem who value privacy and understand collateral, leverage and liquidation. It is less suited to beginners, mobile-only users, or anyone who needs audit reports and published fee schedules before using a protocol.

ShadeX FAQs

What is ShadeX?

ShadeX is the native lending market of Shade Protocol, running on Secret Network. It is described as an encrypted lending and borrowing platform, where users can supply assets, borrow against collateral and take long or short positions on assets such as ATOM.

Which blockchain does ShadeX use?

It runs on Secret Network, a blockchain with built-in privacy features. The project presents Shade as a set of connected privacy-preserving DeFi apps on that chain, and the same ecosystem includes the SILK asset.

What is the SHD token?

SHD is the Shade Protocol token. It is tied to the wider Shade ecosystem rather than only to ShadeX. Details such as supply and utility are covered in the project's own tokenomics material, which is not reproduced here.

What are the fees on ShadeX?

The project has not published a fee schedule on its app homepage. Rates and any protocol fees would be visible inside the app or in the project's documentation. Network gas fees on Secret Network also apply to transactions.

Has ShadeX been audited?

No audits are listed for the protocol in the data reviewed. Any lending protocol carries smart-contract, oracle and liquidation risk, so check for audit reports in the project's documentation and only commit funds you can afford to lose.

Can I use ShadeX on mobile?

The app currently asks users to visit on desktop and says mobile support is coming soon. You would need a wallet compatible with Secret Network to connect.
